oh no!!
just realised that the book my sister bought me was THAT book from a couple of yrs ago that purported to be 'the' secret to the meaning of life...when the real secret was that nothing in it was really secret nor had it been hidden away or 'discovered' by its author. it basically took theories/teachings/philosophies/quotes from various sources including the worlds of religion/philosophy/metaphysics/motivational speaking & the wisdom of great thinkers of both recent times & from ancient history & mixed it up with new agey thought...faux seals & parchment covers...not to mention great marketing!! even oprah fell for it & larry king did a couple of shows about it too.
theres a definite touch of the da vinci code about it...whereas dan brown read books published 30 yrs or so ago...then laced their findings with a good sprinkling of fiction & sensationalism...the author of the secret was 'inspired' by books published 100 yrs ago...The New Thought book The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace Wattles 1910 & 1906 book Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World by William Walker Atkinson...maybe out of print but certainly NOT hidden!!
as with most things not all bad...some good in it...power of positive thought etc but the flip side of that is that it can (& does in the book) go too far...into blaming the victim territory...for their illness/lack of wealth etc...
as a parent of a child with autism i'm always very wary of such thinking...you can cure yourself etc...reminds me of the curebie movement in the autism world...for one autism is a neurological condition NOT a disease...& second acceptance and treatment with any condition/illness will get you a lot further than finger pointing and denial. i do not believe there is a cure for autism itself though we can strive to lessen the difficulties ppl/children with autism experience with communication/interaction & making sense of the world around them etc. but instead of wasting time/effort on 'cures' parents should fully accept their children as they are/meant to be...my sons brain has developed differently in some places compared to mine or my other sons...he is not brain damaged...he is just different...sorry huge digression again (LOL) but watched a clip of jenny mccarthy on larry king today spouting all her nonsense re curing autism...i shouldn't post late i ramble more than usual...
anyhoo...
getting back to 'the secret' my sister seems to have got really into it along with some friends of hers...so what do i tell her when she asks me what i think of the book?? that i agree with a newsweek article that described it as 'pseudoscientific, psychospiritual babble' (damn schwa for being MIA...he would have been proud to see i do have a little bit of 'prickles' in me after all...so not all goo!! hahaha) & a piece in the guardian too that describes adherence to The Secret's 'law of attraction' (for wealth enhancement...which goes against the more spiritual orientation of the New Thought Movement) as...'creed so transparently ugly and stupid that it seems impossible that anyone could take it seriously'...hmmmmm...not sure either will go down very well!! but don't want her buying me the dvd too!! the book was £13!!
a quote (NOT used in the book/film) by one of the 'past secret teachers'...
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former
Einstein
(i may have already put this quote on my diary b/c like the little bald man in the red robe einstein does give good quote
