Bad Side Effect of Healthy Eating

...Does anyone else struggle with gas?

I do not eat meat or dairy products, so I eat a lot of beans, brown rice, high fiber cereals, and fruits and veggies. I get lots of gas and in the past few days it has been especially volatile. Is there anything that helps this? Has anyone used Beano, and does it really work? Are there any side effects? Thanks for the input. I hate to ask a question like this but I need some help.

yeah, increasing in fiber does cause a lot of gas for me too. Beano does help when I take it before I eat, a lot!!! I also have had some success with Gas X gel tabs.

Have you just started eating this stuff? Typically it's kind of bad at first but then it goes away, at least for the most part. When you first start, it's kind of like "system shock" for awhile.

I began upping my fiber about a month and a half ago. This week I have noticed "the problem" more than usual. Not sure why.

Which high fiber cereals do you eat? Do you use any protein powder?

If I could see a list of everything you ate on a day you experienced issues I might be able to help.

I eat Kashi Cereal- GoLEAN crunch and heart healthy. No protein powder.

This is a journal where I document my eating and exercise patterns.

I eat beans and mixed nuts (cashews, almonds brazil nuts, filberts, pecans) almost everyday. i drink 1/2 cup of soymilk with the cereal. I also eat oatmeal, peanut butter, apples and bananas, and veggies. I eat wheat pasta, brown rice, and raisins.

I took a look at your foods and you eat a lot of soy products (soymilk, kashi foods-many contain soy protein isolate). If I were you I would eliminate all soy for a couple days and see how you feel. I have noticed that soy makes me very uncomfortable and eliminating it has helped me tremendously. Just make sure that when you are going a few days without it that you really are eliminating it. Soy is in many health foods. Check everything you eat from your cereals to your tortillas.

Is there a certain time of the day that you start to get gas?

Oh, I also want to point out that you have eaten a fair amount of tomato sauce which can also contribute to gas. As far as that goes there's nothing that I have known to help :( As for beans, lentils, etc try taking a beano before hand. But to tell you the truth I bet it's mostly the soy.

I find that my gas during diets goes WAY DOWN and when I am gaining weight/eating badly my gas goes WAYYYY UP

Not sure why either

Heh heh... I'm eating an average of 42 grams of fibre per day, but for some reason I haven't had much of a problem down below - It was worse for me when I drank loads of beer and ate crud.
