back exercises

Haha yea steve, you mentioned earlier in the thread that unless the dude was taking drugs its hard to imagine gaining so much while losing fat.

It was more a joke. I assume it was steroids or something, but I don't really understand how they work. Id assume you would've still need lots of excess calories to build muscle. UNless it just takes it from your testicles when you're taking steroids

PS - I wasnt serious about wanting to take anything.

well what would be the best way to go at it then. Lose the weight and maintain my strength and then build the muscle and the fat back. I don't understand.

This is a never-ending process unless you lose the fat and are content and simply maintain your weight at 190 or whatever it is.

If you want to try and get lean and then add some more muscle than you have at the point though, it's not a once and done sort of thing.

I've bulked and cut down more than a dozen times in my life.

Bulk up adding muscle until a point where I'm either a) sick of eating or b) feel to soft.

Then cut in an attempt to lose the fat gained in the previous bulk while preserving as much muscle as possible.

And then on and on.

It's not for everyone but that's how it's done.

Unfortunately you don't get to go to a lean state and than build nothing but muscle from there.

Haha, yea, steroids.

I don't know enough about them to speak on the subject fluently but different steroids do different things but most all of them certainly improve calorie partitioning, i.e, more calories go to muscle.

I see steve. since i have started lifting 5 months ago i know i have gained muscle. at least i have gotten stronger. And i have lost 15-20 lbs while doing it. Is this because i just started lifting and the result will disapate or is it that at points i was eating less and losing fat and at other times i was eating enough to gain muscle?

Oh I'm sure you have. Like I've said before, novices or people who haven't trained in a while can gain some muscle in the face of a caloric deficit.

at least i have gotten stronger.

Strength gains and muscle gains most definitely do not go hand in hand.

Strength gains are manifested neurally more than locally at the muscle level in the beginning.

See above.

Increased strength != Increased muscle

Your brain and neural muscular system can 'learn' to be stronger without actually growing more muscle via rate coding, recruitment and synchronization.

If you do a search, I know I've discussed these things before.
