Attempt No.2 - looking for advice

Reading about nutrition can sometimes be misleading as there seems to be so many contradictory views.

For example,

Calorie restriction sounds a bit like what I am already doing, but other articles I have read suggest that I should never be going below 2000 Cal a day if my daily burn is 2800.

You have the right mentality as for why..we just have to tighten up the how. As far as diet coke..that's pretty much all I drink. I haven't had a plain glass of water in forever.

Let's start by checking out sites like fitday and calorie king. Do some googling on some of the things you eat or want to eat. Read labels. Easily half of dieting is knowledge. Instead of focusing on the recommended calorie level, let's get you eating a somewhat normal diet.

I think this is the thing at the moment. I'm eating bran in the morning, sandwich for lunch and a light meal - and in all honesty, I'm feeling good, sleeping well and I don't have a problem with the hunger. I am concerned that I may end up eating for the sake of ensuring I'm not starving myself, when I don't really need to?

you can do a little too much though. I do think, based on what you said, that your number of 1500 is high.

How about for a week, keep a food log along. Try to include calories (if it is from a package and check labels) and portion size. I bet if you look at it after a week, you will see that you are actually overestimating your calorie intake.

Hello again everyone. Thank you for the responses.

Having spoken to a number of people, calorie counting seems to be the route that will work best, mentally for me. I'm on Day 4 now and in that time I've lost just over five pounds. I'm drinking approximately 6 pints of cold water a day, but have decided based on advice that I cannot proceed with such an unorthodox method alone.

Meals during the day now consist of:

Bran or alternate cereal with semi skimmed milk for breakfast
Sandwich (usually ham or chicken) for lunch
A light meal (soup or pasta) for dinner

This has been the formula for the past two days. With absolutely no snacking or beer consumption (which was predominantly my problem). I estimate that based on that, my diet is approximately 1500 Calories a day. I'm told that I am probably burning about 2800 in a day, for height, weight etc.

I do feel hungry, but in a very manageable way. It doesn't bother me and I feel very motivated at the moment. I just hope I can keep this up.

Primevci - I am male, 29, 6'1 and (now) 18st 6lbs. I don't drive and therefore walk everywhere, usually 1-2 miles a day (albeit at a leisurely pace).

Do me a favor, your stats are so close to mine bump up at least another 500 cals... please..

I was pleased this morning to discover that I was down to 18st 5, a drop of one pound from yesterday and all this was after what I would class as a bit of a failure of a day.

I started as usual with the bran flakes in the morning, ham sandwich for lunch but faltered with sweet and sour chicken when eating out with friends in the evening, before having 5 bottles of Miller Genuine Draft.

I calculated when I got home that my evening could very well have been over 2000 Cals alone, so I was expecting a nasty surprise when I woke, perhaps for the past 4 days efforts to have gone to waste, but I'm pleased to say I didn't regain any of the weight.

While I know that beer is a not a suitable replacement for the food I am not eating, it was encouraging to know that I can still lose weight without severe Calorie restriction.

If you look at your weight loss since you started this, don't you think that you are dropping weight a bit too fast?
