Hi there I have stopped eating at Mc Donalds which is great and started to exercise and I have started martial arts.

I have been drinking coke zero alot is this ok?

Also I eat Subway Sandwiches. I have a 12" Sub with heated chicken and cheese with lettuce with a packet of crisps is this ok?

I have also started eating fruit as well.

Also I have switched from white bread to brown bread is that good?

Any advise would be great :D

Can you list some goals?
I don't recommend you drink that Cola stuff. Why put something into your body if it does nothing for you. Subway is a definite good way to go when eating out but try not to go their often. It isn't as good for you as you think. I used to think that way. It is good that you are getting into fruits but make sure you are eating veges too and both in variations. As for the switch from white to brown bread that was a very good decision. Well keep up the good stuff and good luck.

Hi there

Thanks for the reply.

My main goal is to tone up. I have stopped smoking now for 8 months and stopped eating maccy D's and now I am looking at my diet.

I have started martial arts training that has helped loads in my fitness and I go for a jog every other day.

One thing that i am having a problem with is when I have had my dinner I have little snacks after. I use to have say a packet of crisps or a chocolate bar but obviously that not healthy.

Can someone suggest any things else. I eat fruit but I cant keep eating that everytime. lol

My weight is 11 stone 13 pounds. Liek I said I just want to tone up :D

Many Thanks

Congratulations on the bad habit kicking. I know it may be hard. Keep at it. I'd like to mention if you look at the stickies around here you will find the answers to all your questions but I'll give you some hints. If you want to "tone up", you need to eat more. It is okay to have some crisps or what is referred to a "cheat meal" once or twice a week if you feel like you have to have it. Do not do it more than twice a week.

Yup, dump the Coke. Start making water your main drink. You'll get dirty looks at restaurants cause you're not buying expensive drinks, but who cares!! Eat 6 or 7 meals a day, small well balanced meals. Sometimes I go on a snack frenzy at night, it's usually because I haven't eaten enough during the day, or I went crazy working in the gardens after dinner. Just snack healthy. You can eat a lot of fruit! Oatmeal makes a great snack, and filling. And check out Natural Peanut Butter, good stuff. And like RockHard said, check out the stickies. Dump the crisps (OK, I'm an American idiot, I assume crisps are our Potato Chips??)

Crisps are chips yes. You shouldn't eat much fruit. Try to eat more veges. Fruit is high in carbs which isn't always good.

No, for two reasons: (1) you will lose water in your muscles fast which will make it hard to exercise, and (2) coke sucks.

Drink water, and water only. If you have to drink a soda, limit it to just one can.

Also I eat Subway Sandwiches. I have a 12" Sub with heated chicken and cheese with lettuce with a packet of crisps is this ok?

No, for two reasons: (1) Depending on how the cheese and chicken were processed, it can be bad for you. (2) Why 12 "???? Go with the 6", no cheese, and plenty of veggies on a whole wheat bread.

I have also started eating fruit as well.

That's good, but don't forget veggies!

Also I have switched from white bread to brown bread is that good?

Is it whole wheat?

I don't know how much "a lot" is, but I don't think 1-2 cans of zero calorie soda is a problem. People are saying that it won't hydrate you and will make your muscles lose water, but those are inaccurate statements of scientific fact. Coke Zero is 99% water, so I don't see what the problem is.

I would dump the potato chips. The sandwich is probably fine. Check the nutritional information Subway provides to see.

"Brown bread" can mean anything. Without seeing the nutritional information, it is hard to say. I don't like white bread and have never understood those who eat it, so at least for aesthetic reasons, you've made a good move.

Dump the coke zero apart from every now and again if you think you really need to have it. It's hard to kick habbits but worth it.

Don't have cheese and mayo(or other sauces) on your subway and try to only eat there every now and again. Also cut down to a 6" sub and save money and get your nutrition from a more pure source. Pack on the salad, get every bit of available salad that you actually like.

Don't neglect the veggies as overall I think you should eat more veggies than fruit. The key to a successful diet is preperation. If you wait until you are starving you are just going to get whatever is to hand and not care about whats in it. If you prepare your food in advance and then eat before you get extremely hungry you will find it a million times easier.

get your nutrition from a more pure source.
I don't understand what you mean by this. There is no such thing as "pure" food energy. We cannot drink energon like Transformers. We take food energy from compounds that we digest. The energy of an apple is no more "pure" than the energy of a Big Mac.

My problem is I dont like vegitables. Can i take vitamin supplements instead?

Vitamins will not provide food energy or macronutrients, so no, while vitamins are helpful, they are not a substitute for food. You are probably at the age where you are too old to be a picky eater.

Gotta get your veggies, somehow, someway. A diet without lots of veggies is incomplete, if you ask me. What's with all the people saying to ditch the cheese? I eat cheese every day, and did so while losing 30+ pounds. You don't want to go overboard, but it's a good protein source, with some sat. fats.

Pure was the wrong word to use, what I was trying to say was good nutrition will come from fresh foods and not processed rubbish like McDonalds and other fast food. Basically ditch any junk food and stick with fresh vegetables, meat, brown rice/pasta, whole grain breads and other wholesome foods.

I also agree that you can not be TOO picky about what you are eating. Think of eating as a way to fuel your body rather than something you enjoy. Yes you will enjoy some foods, I love veggies as I was brought up eating lots and I love the taste as well as fruit. But if there is something that is good for you such as veggies (Which there is no substitute for as far as I am aware) then just knuckle down and eat them. That is of course no good if they make you throw up and if they do then you are pretty much screwed unfortunately.

Cheese is an alright source of protein and its fine to eat in moderation. I don't think the kind of cheese they use at subway is the same as you can buy in a shop, its extra processed stuff like they use a McDonalds etc I guess.

When I said ditch the cheese I meant when visiting subway. It's not like it will stop you losing weight but every little helps.

good advice except on "dojo" days. Martial arts is a 6-700 calorie per hour event. Fuel up for those classes.

p.s. if you are new to the arts, it is even tougher on your burn rate.

breath man breath!

Ahh I gotcha. Yeah, I didn't even really think about the quality of cheese they use. I'm sure it is processed crap. Good call on that, stick to natural cheese, and as he said, in moderation!

Do I have to watch my portion sizes as well?

Tonight after training I had spaghetti Bolognese. Is this ok to eat?

Thanks for all the comments so far :D

I don't see why people have a problem with food processing. Almost everything we eat has been processed. Juice needs to be squeezed from fruits, milk is pasteurized, and countless things are placed into packaging. Almost no one has a diet that is even 50% raw ingredients.

I also agree that you can not be TOO picky about what you are eating. Think of eating as a way to fuel your body rather than something you enjoy.
This is the opposite of what I said. I said not to be picky. Also, I view eating as something to be enjoyed, not just a biological function.

You keep saying "processed". I do not think it means what you think it means. For example, all cheese, by defintion, is processed.
