Are there any walkers here?

My sole source of exercise for the moment is walking. I usually do around 30 miles per week although I have been doing a bit more recently. Does anyone else here walk on a regualr basis for exercise?

Hi, at the moment walking is all I have too... I take my dog. If you walk regularly and combine it with a good diet I'm sure it does really help.

Yes, walking is one of my favorite ways of exercising. I prefer walking outdoors and up mountains. Keeps me and my family very fit. I like to change or challenge myself differently on each walk with time, extra weights etc. just to keep it interesting.

I used to be a BIG walker (in both senses of the word), and walking is responsible for the majority of weight I lost.

I used to walk 4 miles a day, with a non-food based reward system (in other words, I would walk to the video store and reward myself by renting a vid) and it worked wonders.

Highly recommend a regular walking schedule to those starting out weight loss. It's easy, simple, low impact, tolerable, and easy to stick to.

Such good advice Matt. I do things like that too. At one stage I was pushing my son in a pram twice a day to the shops to carry our groceries back in backpacks. My husband thought I was insane, but determined. Also walking to the gym can help for a bit of extra exercise and to get some fresh air.

Love that idea about the dvd store!

So far I have been walking mostly the same routes but its not so bad. For some reason it doesn't bore me. Am I too simple?

I find that I can't take my dog on the walks that I take for excercise. He needs to stop and pee on everything so I don't get much of a workout.

Another 3.3 miles home work today... :)

I'm fairly competitive -so when I do walk the same route - I will keep track of how fast I went... and always try to better my time...

I have been timing myself on one of the routes I walk. I have been hoping that one day I will be able to the four miles in one hour but I am still pretty far away from doing that.

I walk and run on my treadmill daily. When the weather improves (lovely winters here in Canada, you know) I will also do more walking outdoors. It is so much cheaper and more enjoyable than a gym, IMHO.

cheers and happy walking,

Cool thread.

I owe a substantial portion of my weight loss to walking. The Pennsylvania winters really make walking outdoors a sucky event. I lost my daily momentum and the weight started to creep back on.

I bought a treadmill in November to stave off winter weight creepage but I can't get into it. 3 miles on a treadmill is torture for me, 7 miles on the walking trail is almost painless and 100% more enjoyable. I also have a deck I do laps on outdoors when the trail is shut down (which is a lot now). But even deck walking has been hard to come by with the snow and all.

I got the treadmill for a song but I didn't test walk it before taking ownership and what a mistake that was. This mill must have the narrowest belt in the industry. The concentration needed is mind-boggling and produces an unnatural gait. I've done the 'stupid step' on it repeatedly.

My second year of weight loss, I started biking and the same deal. Regular bike, I can ride 20-30 miles no problem, my stationary bike, if I ride 15 minutes, it's a miracle.

I'm a dead set believer that if one doesn't enjoy their customary exercise, they have little chance of expanding it on something they don't like. There's something about the outdoors for me that makes it all happen. I guess I'm weird that way *shrugs*

I enjoy a walk every now and then. I want to do it more, but I need to get some new shoes (getting some next week :D). Like others have said, I need to walk outside. I absolutely hate the treadmill. One of my early fitness goals was walking to my friend's house (5.2 km/3.2 miles). It was a bit of a mission, but it was good. I think I should do that again.

I always liked walking. A friend and I used to walk all over just because there was nothing else to do and we enjoyed the challange of getting lost and seeing where we'd end up (we were both super bad with relative location and street names!). It's SO much easier outside and with this cold winter weather it puts a crimp in it. I cannot get used to walkin on a treadmill and enjoying it, I wish I did tho cause I'd love to get back into walking.

I usually walk to my work place which is 5 miles away. So I will be doing 10 miles walk per day. It is really enjoyable to feel the breeze while walking especially with your friends. Chit chat along the way and time pass faster. At least we are motivating each other to lose weight together =)

Ten miles a day would be quite an accomplishment. I don't think I could that yet but I would like to in the not too distant future.

I did about six miles today. 3.3 walking home from work and about 3 walking the dog afterward. Feels good. Tomorrow morning will be my four mile fast walk. I find I am looking forward to it.

My car broke down. I had the option of buying a new one or fixing it (not really an option, cheaper than a new car but the car isn't worth $100 and it would be over 2k to fix it, or close). So I decided to walk everywhere until June. Then, I can reward myself with a new car.

My goal is to walk to the store, to the gym (this I prefer, since its a good warm-up instead of using the treadmill for a few minutes, i always feel silly getting on and getting right off.) to work. The only problem is when I need to do like serious clothes shopping or something. I could go into the city OR walk to Target, but those are both extremes. Targets not exactely around the corner. Still, if I walk everywhere it should help me with some weight loss. I think.

Walking can definitely make a difference. For a few months, the dog walks were the only exercise I had time for during the day. I had been losing steadily, but when I added an extra walk a day, I started losing a couple of extra lbs per month. It all adds up!

Walking is my only form of exercise right now. We have a treadmill at my house and I'm starting slow, just a 25 minute walk. I actually like the treadmill as opposed to outside, I sweat a lot when I walk inside. Maybe it's because I'm paying attention to my pace and form, instead of the pretty trees. That said, I'm anxiously awaiting an end to this winter so I can get out and enjoy the fresh air!

30 miles a week is quite an achievement i would say...
the advantages of walking includes:
it strengthens your heart.
it keeps brain healthy brain.
good for your bones.
it helps alleviate symptoms of depression.
it reduces the risk of breast and colon cancer.
it improves fitness.
it improves physical function.

I managed 10 miles today. I did 4 in the morning for an hour and five minutes. It wasn't such a bad time but I was hoping for a faster time. I came home and showered and then walked to the dentist and then the post office after that. That added another two miles. In the evening the dog and I went for another four at a rather leisurely pace. Assuming I do another 4 tomorrow morning, I will have 40+ miles for the week. I don't know where this energy is coming from. Could it be the exercise? ;)

I have been entertaining the idea of walking a marathon at the end of November. I am still a long way from being able to walk that far (and that fast) but I am really intrigued by the idea. In order to walk the course in the allowed time, I think I will have to keep a 4 mph pace for the entire time. I can't even do that for four miles, let alone 26. But who knows? I hoping life will be different with a few dozen fewer pounds and more miles under my belt. Ha, more miles and less fat under my belt!
