Are single-leg squats as effective as regular squats?

Currently, I'm lifting at home where I have dumbbells and a bench. I don't have enough weight to squat like I would if I had an olympic bar and a squat rack. However, if I only work one leg at a time, I would have enough weight.

If traditional squats are better, I can use the gym at school, it's just more convenient for me to lift at home.

Then lift at the school. Single-leg squats (unilateral movements) are important but they will not replace the big compound which is the Squat. The Squat and Deadlift are the two exercises that are essential to do.

Unilateral movments are important also because they protect you from muscle imbalances. Lunges, Bulgarian Split Squats, Single-leg Squats, and Stepups (which are my favorite) are good exercises to complement the Squat.

Thanks for the advice. I could easily go to the school gym once a week. I'm doing a split routine (upper push/lower pull and upper pull/lower push) so each muscle groups gets hit twice a week. Would squats on tuesday and single-leg squats (and/or other unilateral movements) on friday be effective?

squats and single leg squats are both lower push exercises. Do you do deadlifts? that would go on lower pull.

I wouldn't say they are as "effective" at building muscle, but single leg squats definitely have their place in a workout. They help with balance, improve joint strength, and really help with building up your stabilizer muscles. If you are doing upper/lower splits each 2x a week, then you want to vary your exercises anyway. I'd advocate you doing normal squats one day and single leg squats the other day.

Yes, I am doing dumbbell deadlifts on Mondays and Thursdays. I always avoided them in the past because they made my back hurt. I must have had bad form because now I really like deadlifts and I can feel my lower back being worked with no pain.

Thanks for the advice, for now I'm gonna go with squats on Tuesday and split-squats or some other unilateral squat variant on Fridays.
