Anyone do Kick Boxing for their Workout?

I've come to the conclusion a gym workout is not for me. Its so hard to force myself to go and when I'm there I don't like it till I'm done (then like everyone else I feel great). This wouldn't be so bad if I did go atleast 3x a week, but I don't.

I started doing some cardio and strength training exercises at home, and since I started I've kept to it without any effort. I look forward to alot of the exercises which keeps me doing the ones I don't look so forward to. However, I know I really do need more than what I'm doing.

I am considering taking up Mauy Thai. Its thai kick boxing. There is a gym around the corner from my house and they offer a 30 day free trial (where you can attend any of their classes, they also have jui jitsui and kettle bells and lots of stuff). I'm only interested in the mauy thai but I might check out the kettle bells cause I've heard its a great workout.

If I did one to 2 days a week of the mauy thai (assuming my current gym fees of 50/month covers 1 or 2 days a week, I dont know the costs yet) It would be perfect with my current plan. I do so much better with set things and this would be alot more fun than running on a treadmill.

So anyone do kick boxing? A friend of a friend does mauy thai and he said its the most intense work-out he's ever done, but I'm looking to maybe hear from someone who started out at the higher end of the scale to see if its manageable.

Kickboxing can burn on up to 1500 calories per hour and is an awesome cardio workout. I used to take kickboxing classes years ago and continue to practice at least once a week from what I had learned. In my opinion, it is very intense and builds lean muscles.

I choose martial arts over any workout. In my opinion, you should go for it! It wouldn't hurt and you will start seeing changes within a week, if you practice every day. At least 3 times a week. ;)

I go to the Turbo Kick Boxing class at 24 hour fitness. Awesome cardio and is quite an intense work out! I try to go twice a week, but lately with being back in school, my schedule is only allowing it once a week. I would love to take some real kick boxing... Sounds like it would be a blast.

You might want to check your facts on that one... if you really push you can squeeze out 700 cals in an hour, but that's pushing yourself to your max.

I take a mauy thai kickboxing class and it's the most vigorous thing I've ever done. I started out at 195 pounds and it was hard at first because I basically went from barely any activity to an intense workout but after two weeks your body starts to adjust, and it's easy to get into the swing of things. I've heard a lot of people say that at my gym, too, so that's more than my opinion. Spinning or rowing classes may be some of the only things I can think of that could possibly burn more but I have no idea what the stats are on those two. KB is a really great way to work out, and it beats running for an hour or swimming for an hour if you're like me and can't stand to do repetitive motions for long periods of time. Plus the obvious point that it's a good way to burn a decent amount of cals in 45-60 minutes.

I would give it a whirl. Like goddess said like any exercise you will get used to it. I have done a little kick boxing and a lot of western boxing. It depends on how serious you get. I know people who go to the McDojo twice a week and stand like little soldiers throwing leg kicks and I know hard core fighters who go to real gyms and bust ass as well as doing additional training to improve flexibility and explosive power as well as conditioning.

Like anything you will get out of it what you put in.

Oops! You're right :). That was for a two hour intense course =). Max, you can get 800. Tae bo 'claims' 864 per hour.

The result is a very popular upper and lower body workout that burns calories in massive amounts. In fact, Muscle and Fitness rated Fitness Kickboxing as the number one calorie burner of all fitness activities with 800 calories burned per hour.

I probably won't make it till the first week of october, but once I go I'll let everyone know how it went.

I already paid for this month for my gym so I'd rather go there just so I get my moneys worth, but maybe I probably should go before I cancel my gym membership in case I hate it.
