Any vegetarians here?

I'm a frustrated chef... It's something I've always wanted to do but haven't had the time nor excess funds to go to cooking school.. though I will be taking classes late spring/summer....

Oh i'd love to do that. If law school doesn't work out, I will definitely think about culinary school :) I used to watch cooking shows ALL THE TIME on the food network (my friends continue to make fun of me for it), but I have always loved them, since I was like 8 lol. Now its too hard for me to watch most of the cooking shows cause most of it looks soooo good, yet is soooo bad for me lol. So when I watch it I crave it, so I just dont really watch the shows anymore. Plus they dont have any vegetarian shows on there (as far as I know).

there used to be a vegetarian one on pbs years ago - madhur jaffrey was the host - she's a very well known cookbook author and does indian food - her cookbooks are pretty neat too... but i haven't seen it in years...

Ive been eating something called veggie slices...they are lactose free and I swear they tase just like cheese:D Cholesterol free and og trans fat...35 calories a slice...you cant beat that, less than half of what regular sliced cheese has! And it melts:eek: :) Its worth a try I swear;)

Yeah this summer I am going to try to get a job at Whole Foods so I can get a discount on all the cool vegetarian/vegan stuff like the cheese, tofu, seitan, etc... so I can experiment with it all.

Hi!
I realize it has been years since you last posted this message, but I was just wondering if you were still a vegetarian?

My boyfriend is a vegetarian and for the past year I have been eating a lot less meat because we like sharing food a lot to avoid gaining weight and save money.

I lost 6 pounds and never gained them back, not like before when I would gain two pounds lose two pounds every couple of weeks. I feel a lot healthier, my skin is much better, I dont feel as full after eating, my hair looks amazing! :) Anyways, I feel really excited about going full vegetarian and it seems, by your posts, that you were too. Maybe you could share your experience?

It's also been years since this person posted at all. Don't expect an answer anytime soon.

There are some vegetarians on the board, by the way. I'm not one of them, although I do try to limit my meat and find vegetarian alternatives for things like iron and protein, and I'm sure I and many other meat eaters would be happy to support you in your weight loss journey (with the caveat that we don't diss your choices, we don't want you to diss ours).

Yeah this probably isn't the right board for a debate on the ethics of eating animals. (edit: but if anyone feels like getting into it hey, shoot :D I'm always up for a good catfight.)

I'm vegan tho, so shoot if you have any questions. I've managed to both loose weight, have most exquisite blood panel results, bulk up on those lady-impressing muscle thingies that are all the rage amongst the kids and stay vegan.... at the same time! :)

My mantra is chick peas, home baked bread, homemade seitan, tempeh, quinoa and oatmeal. And ofcourse every and any veggie I can get my hands on. Add the daily PB and banana sammie and hell... why would you ever want meat? :)

Have you tried recipe websites? A lot of them have vegetarian/ vegan sections or ways to search vegetarian (as well as ways to search low calorie/ low kilojoule/ low fat/ low GI/ low sodium etc). Some I've perused (which include at least vegetarian and healthy searches) include Taste Australia, BBC Good Food and Skinny Taste. Or just try googling "low calorie vegetarian recipes".

Thanks Amy, will look in to those pages.
I have searched on vegetarian websites but we are just terrible at getting organized and finding the recipes that we like, printing them out, making a grocery list etc.

I almost wish I could find a book that does everything for me. I have seen cookbooks that plan out the entire week, already has the grocery list etc, but never vegetarian.

Also, I live in a small country in Central America. Sometimes I read recipes that contain ingredients that I’ve never even heard of or very difficult or expensive to buy.

I come from a country full of vegetarians who hardly eat any vegetables :). I personally love meat, but I normally do not eat a meal of just meat OR fish.

The important thing is to eat a balanced meal and avoid high calorie, low volume foods. Eat a lot of veggies and fruits and it will help you in many ways. Similarly drink a lot of water.

If it makes one feel good not to eat animals one should definitely go vegetarian, but that is more of a moral/ emotional/ ethical issue rather than a physiological one. But, like I said and so has a lot of people in this discussion, just avoiding meat is not going to help much.....

pizza, pasta, raclette, hashbrown potatoes or potato curry with roti [indian] are not healthy foods, especially for weight loss.

Having said all that...a diet of just meat is not good for you ...unless you are an eskimo :)
