Any tips anyone?

My best way has been cutting back on carbs. I was a carb addict!!! So now I really pay attention to how many I eat per day. Walking, riding my stationary bike, and I drink a crapload of water!!!

cheers

i'm sticking to the plan my nutritionist gave me....

maximum 2 servings of carbs per meal. and a total of 8 throughout the day.
eat 3oz of protein with the carbs or less. but if i have a carb, I MUST have some sorta protein. and TONS of veggies. this has helped me learn portion control and restrain. it also allows me to snack on stuff when I get hungry. and I'm trying to stay around 1200/calories a day.

and drinking tons of water!
coupled by some exercising... this i plan to ante up though soon.

I found the best way to lose weight is simple......run. I joined this forum a about a year ago and i wasn't overweight but just pudgy and fat. Over the past year ive done nothing but run, i started out running around 1 mile a day, and now im up to 10, and i have a 6 pack for it. Worked great for me, and i didn't have to sacrifice any food, and now i can just eat whatever i want as long as i run, its great. But only run if you can, don't hurt yourself.

GuitatarManDan, how long does your running take? And do you run first thing in the morning, or any time of the day?

It usually takes about an hour, sometimes more...depends on the pace and the route I take. And its always good to jog in the morning to kick start your metabolism, but I have school at 8....and being a teenager i do not wake up any earlier than i have to ha. I usually just run when i get home, it really doesn't matter what time of the day you run, just as long as you stay constant with it, you can't just run once and expect results, you have to do it everyday for a couple of months.

Hey thanks for the answer. I used to run first thing in the morning, but it was (then) too much for me. Now I usually do cardio directly after I lift weights. I did some high intensity interval running or rope skipping, but recently started to just hop on the bike in the gym and cycle for 15-20 minutes.

My basic plan was to stay around 1000 calories a day and 100 carbs a day. It's worked fantastic for me 54lbs so far!

I've found for me there is a threshold: If I eat 1600 cal or less per day my body will go into weight loss mode and start catabolizm. If I eat 1700 or more a day, no matter how much I work out, my body olds onto everything it's got. So, I've learned that eating well is VERY important to losing fat.

That and cardio! I am in medical school now, and I was so excited when during our lecture on exercise physiology our professor told us that cardiovascular exercise is key to buring more calories and losing fat. Resistance training, while it will make your muscles strong and tone your body, will not get rid of much fat. But why Cardio? Well, it increases the number of mitochondia, increases the number of mitochondial enzymes and increases the number of capillaries to your muscles. All of this improves your efficiency in using Oxygen and nutrients to generate ATP (energy), and you burn more calories doing cardio. People like to over estimate how much extra muscle burns calories during rest. 2 extra pounds of muscle will only increase your caloric needs by 20kcal/ day. That's nothing! That being said- I think resistance training is important, especially to combat natural muscle atrophy.

That's all I've got for you now. I hope it helps.

ritta, superb post!

resting calorie burn of muscles is overrated. More muscles burn more enrgy only when they are used, not when resting.

As a side note, yesterday I went on a trip to a super beautiful waterfall in the mountain. 4 hour almost nonstop hike up/down hill. Talk about cardio!

eat less calories... I don't buy the don't eat after 6 pm theory... find out your BMR and then knock off 500 calories to start...

I started at around 170 pounds, and my goal is to reach 125 pounds. I am currently somewhere around 1560 pounds. (Did you know this is equivalent to four jean sizes?!)

I did it very simply, and it actually involved very little effort on my part.

I quit eating chocolate and a lot of sugary products. I said goodbye to a lot of the high fat treats I used to scarf down and devour like crazy.

Then the hard part was limiting the vast amount of food I ate... serving sizes in the modern world is NOT your friend.

The hardest part for me was telling myself it was alright if I didn't eat everything on my plate. This is still what I am struggling with... it is a slow process though, and I tend to fail a little more often than now.

Good luck, I wish you the best.

Cardio exercising is amazing, I try to do a bit everyday for around 45 minutes. I'm also finding exercise videos are working because I am so not a sporty person and its easier for me to face jumping around in my room then running.
Cutting down on chocalote, crisps and other high fat sugary foods. I've found that eating Weight Watchers puddings and such has helped, they have much less fat and sugar, it helps stop the cravings, and I find they have a weird aftertaste some of them (this might be a personal thing) so I don't want to go overboard on them.
Also I took a job working in a bar which is very physical I'm sure that helps as well.

I used to hate it when people said to me "losing weight is simple, cut out the junk and exercise" because that never sounded simple to me but now I've got into the swing of it, its really not so bad.
