Anti-Oxidants

My question is are anti-oxidants a vital part of a weight loss program. Like Ive stated in earlier posts I have lost 215 pounds in 11 months, which some say is not healthy but weighing 430 pounds was not healthy either. Anyway back to my original question, I have been taking acai berry only as an anti-oxidant not as some fad to lose weight, but as I have browsed the forums I have seen a lot of opinions on anti-oxidants. If anti-oxidants are an important part of a healthy program what are some of the good ones. Should I drink pomegranate juice or something else or just stick with the acai berry. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Acai berry? Drop it. If you want anti-oxidants, go with pomegranate juice. It's been proven to be tops, only slightly above red wine. Acai berry is actually lower than them and is mostly a fad..an expensive one.

Get some 100% pomegranate juice and you will be good to go if you want antioxidants.

Do you think anti-oxidants are worth taking?

I think it is important but I also think it is a buzz word used to sell things now.

remember there are plenty of antioxidant rich foods in fruits and vegetables. Vegetables and fruit are filled with antioxidants in a variety of forms. For example, there are several hundred types of carotenes (beta carotene is just one of them) and 8 forms of vitamin E. This is a strong argument for vegetables and fruit over pills that contain single forms of nutrients. Furthermore, vegetables and fruit contain combinations of these compounds that dynamically interact.

Look at what you eat now..is it high in fruit and vegetables?

I don't think anti-oxidants play any significant role in weight loss, I haven't seen any evidence of that at all. They're very good for your health though, they kill free radicals etc etc, so I think it's good to have them. Drink tea!

I eat alot of bananas some oranges for veggies I eat broccoli, green beans, tomatoes and lots of jalapenos.

Then you likely don't need anything just for the antioxidants. That isn't to say something like 100% pomegranate juice doesn't have other advantages too. If you are eating enough fruits and Vegs, then you are very likely getting all the antioxidants you need.

The main reason there is this idea we need this stuff is the fact that the average American doesn't eat any where near the right amounts of these needed things.

There is also the fact that it's being sold and money pushes things to the point of overhype.

This.

Don't get sucked into the whole "anti oxidant" craze. IF you eat healthy foods and get a variety of veggies and fruits in your diet. you don't need to spend money on any special products or expensive specialty fruits.

Read the article steve posted on the acai berry and how red wine is actually MORE of an anti-oxidant and better for you anyway. :)

From what I've been reading, anti-oxidants don't seem to play a role in weight loss at all, BUT.. and here's the but of it... Burning fat is a dirty process and releases a lot of built up garbage into to your system. The anti-oxidants help clear that junk out and prevent it from causing damage and blunting that 'feel like crap' phase we can get when we're burning a lot of fat.

Like the above have said.. most foods will supply some. If you are doing fine without taking any supplemental foods or pills (like pomegranate juice, or "zippy's super antioxidant pill 2000 now with acai berry and 5 other expensive things") then don't worry about supplementation. if you are doing better drinking the juice and can afford the calories and sugar, then that's what you can do.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I probably will start drinking some pomegranate juice and do away with the acai berry. I can afford the calories and sugar of the juice. Thanks again.

GOOD JOB!!!! I agree with you 100% I don't think losing that weight was unhealthy at all considering where you started!

As for antioxidants - drink green tea.

Various juices are good - but they have lots of sugar and calories so you'd have to monitor your intake of other foods to closly (even if it's no sugar added - the fruit alone has sugar).

Though healthy in moderation, juice essentially is water and sugar. In fact, a 12-ounce bottle of grape soda has 159 calories. The same amount of unsweetened grape juice packs 228 calories.

The $10 billion juice industry maintains that a conclusive link between its products and obesity has yet to be established, but researchers say sugar is sugar, and sweet drinks of any kind must be consumed with care.

Part of the problem is that the calories in juice are so concentrated. Just half a cup (4 ounces) of apple juice has 60 calories, the same as a whole apple, but without the fiber that makes fruit filling.

Yes juice has vitamins and stuff - but there are other low/non-calorie ways to get it.

hi! im trying the green tea diet (said to have lots of antioxidants)
