another noob seeking help

hello all

this week i was finally able to talk the wife into us joining a gym.
when they went through their sales pitch i clearly told them i knew nothing about fitness, or excersize or nutrition. i specifically asked if i joined, would they tell me what to do and how to do it. they said they would, the price seemed right, the gym looked clean and well maintained, so i went for it.
then they did my initial fitness assesment.
they told me i was fat and out of shape (DUH)
then they went through a whole bunch of stuff in about an hour while they showed me a few excersizes. it seemed like it was intentional to overload me with information as fast as they could so that i wouldn't fully grasp it.
they only showed me enough stuff to get their point across that i needed to spend an extra $60/month to book 12 sessions with a personal trainer.
i feel like they kinda rooked me. if they told me in the beginning it was 1 price for the gym, and then another price to learn what to do and how to do it, i could have made an informed choice on what club to join.
opinions please?
i am wondering :

should i stick with just the membership and try to learn what i need to do here?

should i pay for the personal trainer? (nutritionist is extra, i am percieving from the tiny bits of info i can glean from their answers to my questions)

should i find another gym?

this whole experience is new to me, i am 43, and pretty out of shape.
i don't want to be this way anymore. i have plenty of time on my hands.
until my immigration is finalized here in canada, i can't work, so why not use the time to work out? right?

sorry for the long post, i hope you folks can offer opinions.

My opinion, fwiw, is stay at the gym and get some personal trainer sessions for a month or two. Take note of what the personal trainer has you do. Later, after you have seen some results and are sure you have the motivation, you can go off on your own without the personal trainer.

Alternatively, there are certified personal trainers on this forum that can set you up with some exercises and you can google the exercises to see how they are done.

cool, thank you for responding:jump1:

i guess i'm just afraid that they will string me along, and i'll end up having some new service to buy everytime i turn around. i would have been alot more comfortable knowing all the costs right from the beginning.
because we are a 1 income household, we need to be real careful about money.

Agreed. It will help. You could spend that $60 on 1-3 good books and people here can give you some great recommendations, but if you get a decent trainer for a month or two you'll learn better, faster. If they have you doing mostly curls, dump them and go with the books.

well, keep your fingers crossed for me then. wife's fitness evaluation is saturday, so she get's the treatment i already got where they make their pitch. she brings home the bacon for now, so she (ultimately) decides how it gets spent.

Good luck! If not, you can read around here for routines and then google the specific exercises. It can be done with a little bit of work, but it helps to have someone check your form when you're starting out.

What the others have said is 100% right. If you have a thirst for knowledge and a desire for fitness then everything you need is on the net, for free!

Personal trainers do the thinking for you and can motivate you. If you cant be bothered thinking and researching or lack motivation so badly that you cant workout by yourself it might be justifiable.

If it was me I would be buying some books or something.
