Another new guy

Wow- looks like I found the right spot. I am 43 and looking to lose about 60 pounds. The good news is that I have done it before. The bad news is that I have done it about 4 or more times before ;-(

So, this time, I am reaching out online to get a little support and encouragement from other folks who may be in the same situation, and maybe this will be the last time I lose this weight. I appreciate your help (in advance) and hope I can add to the forum as well.

It is good news that you've done it before, but HOW did you do it before? And why did you put it back on?

Welcome to the forum! I'd recommend starting a diary in the diary section of this forum :) x

Hi Dave,

Welcome. I know what you mean about losing the 60 pounds multiple times before. I think I have lost the weight 5 people in my lifetime-lol. This is a good place to start. The forum is great both for information and support. Good luck!!

Hi Dave and Welcome,

By now you know you aren't the only one who has had this yo-yo weight issue. I also am on my second trip down. First time 80+ lbs down, now I am on my second 60 lbs loss. Good luck and welcome to the Forum!

Thanks!

Thanks guys. Now a fitness question for anyone out there: I am working on reducing calorie intake by reducing portions, and cutting out junk foods. Not there fully yet, but getting better. As for excercise, I have a beautiful Nordic Trac treadmill that has seen about 20 uses in the last 15 years (but makes a great clotheshanger!). So, I have started using that again for about three weeks now.

Some things I have noticed:

almost all of my weight is in my belly. Classic beer-belly syndrome, though I don't drink beer. Working out five times a week for three weeks (30 minutes each, burn 300+ calories, about 1.75 miles each, top speed 4 mph), I have seen a HUGE difference in the size of my leg muscles, but virtually NO difference in the size of my belly. How long can that take to show results?

Second, in the past I have tried stomach excercises to tone my belly- classic sit-ups mostly. Even in conjunction with the aerobic (treadmill) workout, the only thing I've noticed with those is that my belly appears to get BIGGER?!? Do I have to lose all of the belly fat before I can see any kind of difference in ab muscles?

Thanks again everyone. If there is another thread that is a better place to ask these questions, please point it out.

"abs are made in the kitchen."

Unfortunately, you can't choose what part of your body will lose weight, and it seems for most men the belly fat is the hardest to lose. Keep working out and eating right so that you can reduce your body fat and eventually the belly fat will decrease. Targeting your ab muscles will not reduce the amount of fat on top of your abs.

Trust me when I tell you this..... I am no expert on anything! But, I do know a few things.
1. You can't spot reduce fat... just doesn't happen! It sure would be great if all those miracle creams worked so I could run it on my tummy and poof five weeks later I had abs of steel!
2. Calories in must be lower than calories out for weight loss. Pretty simple and makes sense to me.

I wish I had an answer for you on this one, but I don't. I go to the gym 5-6 days a week. Elliptical machine 4 days and lift 2 days. I count my calories and make sure that I drink lots and lots of water. I have been at this for 6 months.... trying to be good, I have lost 30+ lbs and still have another 30+ to go. I know by hard work and perseverance I will meet my goal, but.... BUT it takes time. Find what will work for you, then keep at it. DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP! In the end.... it will all be worth it!

Most of us here are all in the same boat... ask questions, look around. Soon you will see the lbs start to go.
