another dummy

how do you meditate...and what is it for ive never really tried it but i heard it helps your mind and body relax

hi try loads of techniques. Good starter is to sit quietly and concentrate on your breath to clear your mind of thoughts, don't get angered with yourself if you notice you're thinking of the shopping list, your next work out or the fit chick you saw you the gym the other day, just notice the thoughts and allow them to pass just as they arose, with practise it'll be easier and your mind will become more settled.

it can be used for what ever you want it for. pretty handy tool really. i use it alot for my religon........by the way i wont mention it in order not to offend anyone but its really good and can be quite enlightening..........eek i sound like some stoner hippy but its true

I bought a type on meditation awhile back it had a few exercises and then the actual sitting on the floor meditation part.
I do find that it is nice to do right before bedtime, I have put put myself against a wall though as sitting straight for that long tends to get my back excited.

its always good before bedtime alberta the main thing to bear in mind is confort not to bore you cause i dont know how into this you are but basically when your awake the brain is in beta stateand now your trying to send ya brain into the theta state, deep sleep but still having consceinous....(squse the spelling). this is where ya have dreams and the brain switches off there is another level the alpha state where if you ever sleep on a train or daydream thats what ya in.......kinda like all non essential system shut down, this is good for relaxing and letting muscles untense and so on (often induced by massage and stuff like that)
so people assume to meditate you need to sit up.........this is a misconception, thats to do with chakra aligning (if you wanna know more about that pm me) but lying siting some people sit on a chair.........as long as your confortable really..........and gets your back excited?? anyway glad to see some more posts in here............

I'm not overly into meditation although have tried it a few times.

By getting my back excited I mean that by trying to sit straight it tends to ache after awhile so I sit with myself leaning against a wall and that seems to help.

Don't know much about the specifics of mediation Lexx but would love to learn.
I try every so often to do it before bedtime or I use yoga to stretch things out before bed as well.

cool like I said its great before bed because it allows you to digest the days activities and then go to sleep when you go to bed as apposed to laying there playing with ya thumbs thinking about that weed you couldn’t get out or the a**wipe that cut you up at the traffic lights!!
Again Like I said you can do it lying down if its comfortable the sitting position is just used to align chakras which is almost a completely different ball game but briefly........7 chakras (scuse the spelling) (you might know them from yoga) crown (above head) third eye (not to be confused with japs eye ((crude humour but always gets a chuckle) , Throat , heart, solar plexus, groin, and ground and when sitting in the lotus position* cross legged will do all chakras are aligned thus meditating like this allows you to muddle through matters of heart, mind, soul, the world and mother nature Blah blah blah........but if you are just using it to unwind from the day, you are trying to achieve a deep sleep but in a conscious state (if that makes sense) switching off all non-essential systems and letting your brain cool down: awake is the beta state. where you are most alert. Beta is the type of brainwave pattern. Daydreaming, astral travel and just before you go to sleep, is alpha state (if you ever wondered why you were tetchy in the morning or if someone wakes you up in the night its because, if the alpha state is disturbed the bodies natural response is an adrenaline dump so you are instantly alert and ready, (damn those Neanderthals, programming our brains with useless crap!!) and lastly, where rem sleep occurs is theta state this is deep sleep, hypnotised or unconscious. When you meditate the aim is to be in that last state where you unconscious and conscious and can empty all the brains baggage and start the next day afresh. Contrary to popular belief too much deep sleep can be bad for the brain as it lulls and becomes harder to stimulate. That’s the science part (like the shampoo ad says) coincidently people in comas are actually in the beta state Yep wide awake! Weird huh?? But it’s also good for therapy reasons and other stuff that pertains to relaxing and stuff. Imagine you carrying a suitcase for 25-30 years When ya asleep it tries to empty as much as possible (why you can’t remember when you were three and the capital of Iceland *Reykjavik) meditation can help impede nervous disorders and some mental illnesses. I don’t know anything at all about yoga other then its really hard and not just women prancing about in leotards!! anyway hope this helps understand what ya doing and makes it a little less mumbo jumboie.........I like it mumbo jumboie but there is a science there!! Happy chilling

Must admit that alpha state makes sense. If I'm in a good sleep and someone pokes you or whatever and boom! your up your ready for bear! heheh has happened to me more than once.

I have noticed that after I do yoga and am all stretched out sometimes I sit and just breathe and I find that it is way to easy for me to snooze so I open my eyes so maybe I'm a little better at it than I thought.

How long do you do meditation per session for? I don't do it for to long cause like I said I find myself getting snoozey.

Yoga isn't that bad really. I've done it off and on for a couple of years now and honestly heheh no tights! hehehe

You should try it. Things are tighter in the beginning but they start to warm up and loosen over time and it makes little things easier.

Catch ya later

wow well thats a question i cant really answer. Erm it really depends on what you are doing? I use it for my religon so if i am doing something like a spirit journey or trying astral travel anything up to 2 hours (i sat in a park three months ago for and hour and a half meditating against a tree from 10:30 till 12 at night. I actully caught a cold from that hahaha) if i am just unwinding maybe 20 mins maybe even less depends on what the day has been like generally the harder and longer the day the longer you should meditate.......my only advicce is two fold A: its not a race 10 mins or 10 hours as long as its what you need or want, and your doing it when you want to not because you have to you'll be fine, sometimes relaxing is confused with meditating, and its not meditating is a conscious effort to immerse your mind in relaxation and calm your inner thoughts (this obviously does not constitute vegging on the sofa infront of the tv).
one last point i felt abit bad meditating last last :) in my last post i mentioned about people in comas being in the beta state, and while this is true there are other things which overide the cerebral kinetic impulses. Thats why people arent sure if patients can hear you or not. Also parts of the mudula oblongarta and serabulm are affected realesing chemicals which slow body impulses. I am no doctor and i only know what i know through research. I didnt wanna make anybody upset by bringing false hope or raising bad memories. And if anyone is in a situation involved with someone in this condition you have my sincerist condulance and i hope for the best for you.I just wanted to say that and happy chilling dudes alberta if ya wanna know anymore holla

the reason why I asked how long is sometimes 10 minutes and my eyes pop open and sometimes 5 so I guess its how long you need, okay I can do that.

You seem quite imformative on this, you mentioned research have you been scouring the net for tidbits?

I find I do that and every so often a blurp of something will catch my attention.

Thanks for the info Lexx

Yes and no, meditation is part of my religion so its in nearly all of my books, and I use them as my sources. But as part of the other things I practice like reflexology its always good to make sure you are in "attunement" before you start aligning stuff for someone else. I suppose I got into it from martial arts, which I started when I was a kid (about 9) learning mind clearing and basic Form, now I use it for other things, trying not to sound too Vulcan but, it can help clearing up problems you might have: If ya think about it a fight you have had with someone or about something, maybe the fight itself is Clouding your judgement but you are too involved to see that. Meditation can almost distance you from the problem, allowing you to see it in a new light, which is often the key. The internet is a strange place to look around for "alternative" stuff like this, unfortunately anyone can set up a website and waffle on about martial arts, meditation and yoga, as long and they can hold up a conversation about it. So take everything you read with a pinch of salt. There was a camche Indian called Oh Sinnia (scuse the spelling again) who went through several rights of passage to become a shaman (which is what I am). After he became the tribal shaman he declared that anyone could meditate (something usually only the shaman did) and no-one needed to know how to do it, why they would or for long long.........so people started doing it. To see when the best time to fish was, whether he's son would be a good warrior or hunter or shaman, were things they might have meditated on, and eventually all the tribes adopted this approach, obviously the shamans still were the medicine men, but they were no longer seen as the only people who could converse with the spirits, kind of like when Christ invented prayer for man. And that spread to the outside world, which is why there are soooooo many ways of doing it, lighting incense, sitting, kneeling, lying down, dark room, candle lit room, so many variations on one thing but the principle is the same as long as you feel it, your in the right. If you don’t, don’t despair try something different........I cant meditate lying down in the dark.........I fall asleep!! But some people don’t like Smokey incense, everyone is different so your personal meditation should reflect that, like I said time is unimportant because if ya eyes pop open...ya brains done emptying itself!! Sorry if I waffled on a bit its kind of hard making myself clear without making it sound like mumbo jumbo and without alienating any other religions just because its not a Christian concept but hope it helps

wow! i have been away for a while and have loads of posts to catch up on!!!

interesting info lexx! Maybe get it going on MACentral as well..

cheers

Yeh I find trying to do it lying down also causes me to fall asleep, which is most annoying if that is not what your trying to accomplish :)

I find that if I am really wrestling with something, a decision or something else I'm trying to wrap my brain around that walking seems to help. I whirl it around in my head and sometimes talk to myself about it. Sometimes it works.
I haven't been able to do it much this year as we are just dealing with the last of the snow and cold weather but plan on doing it again soon.

I must admit that searching martial arts and yoga does bring you to ALOT of sites, some look like they know what they are talking about some not so much.
What martial arts do you practice Lexx? or did practice.

This is kinda what got me going on the meditation and yoga thing. A exercise class I attended taught kick boxing and thats when I notice my lack of flexibility so started working on that through yoga and through yoga I checked out tai chi some and from there found meditation.

martial arts i did yikes........well it took me a little while to find something i enjoyed doing, i was quite small and although i lifted i was still pretty small, not meaning to sound macho or anything but i came from a ruff neck of the woods and fights were common place so i wanted to learn something to defend my self at first. I begin doing ikedo when i was 9 and studied that untill i was 13 then i went onto jeet kun do when i was about 15 till 17 and really enjoyed it but unfortunatly some pshycal reasons meant i was unable to attend for 8 months, and i decided when i returned to full health i would give something else a go........so i had a look around and did some capawira but man was that hard and it was too much of a big step too soon and ended up re-injuring myself. I still practise all the stuff i learnt from all the different styles but its kinda cartwheels and axe kicks punches and throws, so now its a jumble of all of them. Last thing i did was mongolian kick fighting with my friends, v.v.v.v brutal lots of gouges and holds, Stuff like "iron bar" and "Mace arm" mainly a power system. is a good website to find out bout stuff like that i post there as well. I too go walking (aborigonies call it walk about) they go and commune with the ancestors. like i said its sometimes gets confusing between thinking and meditating. both good. And both help. i gotta admit yogas not my bag but tai chi is just slowed down martial arts i love watching both both dont think i have the coordination for it to be honest. Lastly i have pm'd you an exersise to try if anyone else would like the exersise i will be making a full indepth meditation post on the aforementioned website.........have fun!!

okay got the pm thing figured out Lexx if I did it right you should have one waiting.

Got the info and will give a try, not sure how well I'll do but I shall give it a shot. Will let you know how far I get.

I did check out Akido at one time on the net after I heard that Steven Segal was doing it. Is that the same kind of martial art you were talking about?

Well I'm off talk to you later

steven segal erm not sure about that although i generally love martial arts movies from things like the big boss through to shanghi noon. trying to slightly stay on topic meditation can be misrepresented in movies like blade and ........(theres a steven segal one but cant remember it). Where you have to face a plant or have acupunctured cinderblocks to do it and alot of acciedents happen cause people try and copy the stuff they see. Its a shame for the sake of reading a book and doing it right they get it wrong and never go back to it. like i said the internet is a wonderfull place i prefer books but also alot of books are written by idiots who prattle on about nonsense and tell you how to do it and what to do........true meditation comes from within..........lemme know how you get on with the pm i'd really like to know.

I've tried the way you mentioned in the pm but to be honest heheh I fall asleep before I get passed two stairs.
I am going to have to try something different I guess to keep myself up!

Mistake I think was, was that I was lying down at the time and off I went. Shall have to give it a try sitting next time heheh maybe I'll be able to get all the way to the bottom!

As for the way they show meditation and such on movies and such ( I think the segal movie you were thinking of is Hard to Kill)
I guess its what works for you, some people may think thats cool and it works although I thinks its a bit overdone although for movie sakes thats probably necessary.

Some find that simplicity is cool and it works.

What do you think?

i couldn't have said it better! yeah they do glamourise it in the movies and yeah it was hard to kill thanks........what a flick!! but i guess it would be alittle boring to watch steven segal sitting infront of a candle doing nothing for half an hour!! booooring!! So yeah two steps is actully really good for the first attempt. I didnt even get that far. Its kinda a mix between concentration and meditation, and i have the attention span of a gnat!! so its aim is to increase your concentration and awareness. Like i said sometimes you get carrid away thinking about shopping lists and peoples birthdays and blah blah blah its a good starting block because once you master this technique to begin meditating you need to go down three steps and your mind has anchored that feeling and thought to calm relaxed and clear thoughts and you can begin from there. I think some people can get a bit carried away and telll you they meditate for like three hours a day and they dont they are dozing on the couch!! but i totally agree. There are different types of meditation though so i guess they are kinda meditating but not really
