Ankle, foot problem! ):

Hey guys, i was having a game of basketball when someone stepped on to my foot and kinda held it there for a while, and i twisted my ankle leading to a minor eversion sprain. The problem is, the area where i got stepped on which i suppose is the navicular or something like that (somewhere around the midfoot) is hurting like mad, and i cant really walk without it hurting or much less run and do everything else, even when i am resting, i can feel a little throbbing. It has been 4 days and it is still hurting. Also, I cant tiptoe cause the area of my foot hurts and i will feel a strain at the back of my foot (area above the heel) which i THINK is the achilles tendon. Any idea what are the causes and what can i do about it?! ):
:speechless:

I have sort of the same problem but this throbbing pain I have is in both ankles and hurts a few mins into my games of basketball. I havent twisted either one, so Im not sure why they hurt so bad? Could it be my shoes? Ive never had this prob before and have been using these shoes for a few months now.

It could very well have something to do with your shoes or it may be the mechanics of the way you run. I have the following 3 suggestions:

(1) Buy a new pair of shoes as you had suggested. Make sure they are giving additional support to the area in pain, i.e your ankles. They make cross trainer shoes that are designed to provide additional ankle support and investing in a pair may solve the problem.

(2) Visit a sports medicine doctor that has experience in biomechanics. They will be able to watch you run and make suggestions as to ways to correct it. By ensuring you are using the proper technique it can greatly reduce the stress on your muscles and joints.

(3) Try an epsom salt bath. Epsom salt or magnesium sulfate has been shown to be beneficial for strains, sprains and bruises commonly associated with various kinds of physical activities. I run everyday and often have muscle and joint pain as a result. Whenever I feel a little more discomfort than usual I take a 30 minute epsom soak and it helps to ease the immediate pain and allows me to wake up the day day ready to run again. I also found a new formula at Walgreens called Pepsom which is for sports and have been using that one for a month or so now. It has the addition of spearmint oil which has been used for centuries as a local anesthetic so it is even better at numbing the immediate pain you feel after playing.

I would suggest probably trying these in reverse order because epsom salt is the cheapest fix if it works for you, a doctor specializing in biomechanics will be able to advise you as to whether new shoes would help and they may suggest a particular type or brand of shoe that would work best to correct the problem.

Hope this helps and you get back to playing pain free as soon as possible.

it has only been 4 days.

relax a bit, give it a chance to heal. PLus, you keep testing it- so it doesnt even get a chance!

ice and epsom and stuff will help you feel better

don't panic, and stop adding energy to the injury.

OR-- get it amputated at the knee- prob solved
