An NYC Girl's Diary

Each an every year since I was about 12, I make a resolution to lose weight. I've seen my weight go up and down and I am now so sick of it. This year in 2008, I am losing weight and keeping it off. I feel that I've matured so much this past year and I want to start the new year off fresh and confident about myself.

I began noticing that I had weight issues when I was in the sixth grade. All of my friends at school were smaller than I was. I looked like I was developing a lot quicker than them and it was because of my weight. I used to always eat junk food and never really exercised much. In 7th-9th grade, I was on the volleyball team and that helped my weight some but I always gained it back once the season was over. My highest weight was in high school. I weighed about 240lbs which is a lot on my 5'3" frame. I looked back at my prom pictures and hated what I saw because all I could see was my fat.

I went away to college, and once again my weight was up and down. I was hanging out with a group of girls that were not really good for me. One of my friends lost a significant amount of weight during the summer and making a huge deal about it. I didn't want to be upstaged so I was competing against her to lose weight. I began binging and purging and went from 220 to 190 in about 2 1/2 months. I began getting so many compliments from people already but I felt like crap. Eventually I just stopped doing it because I felt so sick all the time and didn't want to lose weight like that. I ended up gaining all the weight back.

Right now I am about 215 lbs and I want to lose weight the safe and healthy way, through diet and exercise. I will not be joining challenges because I know how competitive I can be and it can get dangerous again. I am excited about my journey and can't wait to see the results!

Glad to see that you started a diary!
That is going to be one of the best things that you can do for yourself. And just being more aware of how you feel will help you get this thing going.
My best advice for you is to figure out what your caloric allowance is. Take into effect any exercise you do currently. Be honest with yourself on this one. Then stick to it!!!!
Also once you know HOW many calories.......WRITE it ALL DOWN!!!! 'Cuz guessing at it will only cause you to go over or under.
You have made the biggest decision already. Now go for it!!!
Good Luck!!!
If you want you can check out my diary at Bellaryna's Journey.

Thank you so much for your response. I have already started to write down the amount of calories that I eat. I will also check out your diary. Thanks for the advice!

hey i would like to see maybe if we can be buddies or something, just let me know.. i want to lose about 30 lbs by the end of Feb. if not then before April. and would like to be 150lbs in the end! i wish the best for you and the new year to come! I know WE can do this!!

It's interesting that you note your college bulimia. A number of my friends, myself included, were either regular or occasional bulimics. I've since overcame it, like you, but found that weight loss the healthy way at first was kind of discouraging because it didn't happen as rapidly as when it would when having an eating disorder. Keep me posted on how you're doing. And don't get too discouraged if the scale doesn't move down as quickly as you would hope. :)

I am so glad that I am over it. It was not a good time in my life. I think that I will appreciate the gradual weight loss more because I know that I did it the healthy way.

It sounds like you're in a really good place to take on a new lifestyle!

Really though, things like weight gain and eating disorders all come from the same place I think. It's when something emotional happens and we can't find a better way to deal with it. So coming to terms and dealing with everything in a healthy way will undoubtedly help drop the pounds over time! :)

Hello there nycgirl! We live in the same place so maybe we can actually be in-person buddies :).

It sounds like the key for you is consistency and worrying about what you're doing right, rather than worrying about the scale numbers. I didn't join the New Year's-Vday challenge because its all about the weight lost rather than the activities you are doing to try to lose that weight. Since I've been on a plateau since last June, I also cannot do challenges that focus purely on my stagnant weight.

So tell us what your plan is for losing this weight. How many calories a day will you aim for, how much and which type of exercise, and what types of foods will you be eating?

Stop by my diary if you have a chance. Stick with us and you WILL see results!

Congrats on choosing the healthy way! What are you using for your food an exercise plan? You can do anything you set your mind to, you just have to believe it.

I will be eating up to 1400 calories a day. I will be working out 3 times a week for 30 minute and eventually increasing to 5 times a week for one hour. I am kind of confused about where to begin. Also, I am home from college and my family does not eat healthy at all and they make it difficult because there is so much junk food in the house. I am trying to fight it but it is tough.

I say this in the kindest of ways sweetie, ok? Ya know what I've noticed with almost every single "newbie"? They (you) all start out with such a small amount of calories. And then y'all wonder why you didn't keep it up longer than a week and never reach your goals that you set every freakin' monday! Or worse still, but even more common, pooof and y'all are gone and we never hear from you again, until maybe another fat year has passed when you want to start up again with the extreme dieting that never seems to work.

In most cases you will start off losing by eating a lot more than that, depending on how much you ate before you started your diet. Add up what you normally eat on an average day. I guarantee this will be well worth it in helping you figure out how to find a plan you REALLY WILL STICK WITH THIS YEAR. Do something different this time!

I feel you on the junk foods ma, I can't say no or even start being "good" til they're all eaten up and out of the house. Of course skinny H is forever bringing junk food up in here so I've had to learn to look right at him and ignore that food! But this ONLY WORKS if you're not STARVING!

So try starting with 1800 calories a day and doing a daily 30 minute walk, and see if you lose before going lower. You're not going to get far on 30 min exercise 3 times per week though. People past a certain age dont even maintain their weight on that amount, much less lose 90 lbs.

Remember, the key is to do this DIFFERENTLY than you usually do (and I'm sure you've tried the weight loss thing countless times).

I see what you are saying about the 1400 calories a day. S far, I've been ok with it. So I think I will stick with it unless I feel I should increase my calories. I set 30 minutes for workout right because I am really out of shape and haven't worked out in a while. It's 30 more minutes then what I usually do but I absolutely plan on increasing my exercising.

The junk food is tough because I have a skinny 15 year old sister who eats a lot of junk food but I have been doing a good job avoiding it.

Thank you for your suggestions.

hey girl, so how are you doing so far? when are you weighing in?? Hope your staying on track, i know that WE can do this!!! good luck:biggrinjester:
