Amy's weight loss diary

A Thanks Sunflower, I appreciate the ideas. I'll give it some thought. I'm starting to wonder if simple is better, because while I want to do something really special for the occasion, the day is about me as well and I don't want to be stressed to hell. But one of the recipes you gave me could be made in advance, so I might do that. I will let you know how I get on.

I'm going to try a new format for my food diary tonight. Since the forum change, I haven't been able to transfer the information from my calorie counter easily and the system I have used has left some really awful formatting. I'm going to try what I used to do which is to write out what I've been eating (this will be easier because I've decided to use my speech recognition software).

Wednesday 24 August

Breakfast: 80 g summer fruits, 31 g porridge oats, 99 g light fromage frais, 0.7 g cinnamon, 62 g milk, 227 g coffee, 53 g milk, 247 g coffee.
Subtotal: 225 calories, 16 g protein, 32 g carbohydrates, 3 g fat. 29/59/12

Snacks and lunch: 121 g strawberries, new vegan stew ( 243 calories per serve), 91 g greengage, 136 g pear, rice cake with 7 g peanut butter and 8 g sultanas, 154 g strawberries, 66 g blueberries, 59 g light fromage frais, 0.5 g cinnamon.
Subtotal: 593 cal, 23 g protein, 113 g carbohydrates, 8 g fat. 14/73/12

Dinner: Salmon quiche, 340 ml Bundaberg diet ginger beer, 6 g Flora cuisine, 151 g onion, 5 g garlic, 134 g mushroom, 124 g green capsicum, 185 g orange capsicum.
Subtotal: 443 cal, 29 g protein, 47 g carbohydrate, 17 g fat. 25/40/35

Dessert: 11 g Green and Black's butterscotch chocolate
Subtotal: 50 cal, 1 g protein, 5 g carbohydrate, 3 g fat. 7/40/53

Total: 1320 cal, 70 g protein, 199 g carbohydrates, 31 g fat. 528.4 mg sodium (35%). Final split 20/58/22

I haven't had enough water today, and will rectify that in part by having a night tea before I go to bed. But I really need to get back to drinking water.

let's hope there weren't any really stupid mistakes in there. This speech recognition thing is going to take some getting used to, but it's something I have to do anyway.

Hey Amy!! you are doing fab fab!! We are exactly the same height so that is pretty cool!! But, you are ALOT slimmer than me though!! Major jealousy right now!! haha

Congrats on your weight loss and congrats on doing so greeeeat!!

All the best dear xoxox

AThanks Irish Princess- don't worry, you'll get there, and you'll have learned and achieved a lot more as a result, I bet!

So... the good news is I've discovered an insanely good coffee. I love it, it's not at all bitter, it tastes like chocolate... seriously, omnomnomnom.

The bad news is that I overdid said coffee (I drank about a litre of it, which is craziness for me) and now have a rotten headache and am hungry. Had my first "carb cravings" ever (as opposed to "specific food" or "junk" or "need to stuff face" cravings). I've managed it fairly well, I think- have had fruit, as I usually do, and a slice of bread with a little margarine and a tomato for my carb cravings... and then a bit more fruit. I'm hoping that it settles it all down. I sort of want to keep eating but it's now less hunger and more "I feel crappy". It's self-inficted though, so don't feel too sorry for me. (I've also been drinking lots of water to try to flush the excess caffeine out . Speaking of which *pours another glass*)

I'm insanely looking forward to Monday. Haven't quite decided what the spread will be, but I'm getting closer to it. I've already ascertained where the leftovers will go (I'll put out a few things of each and bundle up the rest to minimise damage- it'll be a very bad diet day, but there's an appreciable difference between having, say, 6 biscuits/ cakes/ pieces of slice each, and eating 3-4 batches between two people). I also bought a little milk jug, and two little containers that I might put cream and jam in (I think one's meant to be a tiny sugar bowl, it has a lid, while the other one is almost the size of a tea cup, the same sort of shape, without a handle. The pattern on them are similar but not identical to the ones I bought the other day). Getting a little worried that my boyfriend's present (which I had to send away to be altered) won't get here in time (it's only got today, tomorrow, and possibly Saturday if delivery happens on weekends)- but I'm sure he'll accept a picture or something. Won't be the same, but he's not so picky that he'd demand something on the day (while it'd be nice to have on the day- if someone thought an expensive and well-thought out present was somehow less valuable/ nice because it didn't arrive in time due to circumstances outside my control... I wouldn't be with them, frankly). I hope all the cooking works out- a lot of it I haven't made before.

On another note- does anyone know about making porridge in the slow cooker? I'm thinking it might save time if I make up a week's worth of porridge overnight one night (as in oats and water), and take it from the fridge as I need it. I've done some googling and the overwhelming consensus is "don't do it, the milk ruins it" (but really? people don't know that dairy in the slow cooker doesn't work terribly well? didn't they ever read the instructions that came with theirs?). Would that work, do people think, and how would I adapt water/ oat quantities?

AOoooh, I have an idea to make your afternoon tea super special! Theres a mad hatters themed one at the sanderson hotel (very posh) in london, which I have been dying to go to. I thought it was only on for a limited time last year, but I've found out it still on. Maybe you can take some inspiration from it.These are the is the details about it pasted from their website...

Guests are invited to “tumble down the rabbit hole†and enjoy the wonderful world of tea in the beautiful Courtyard Garden. Executive Chef at Sanderson, Peter Lloyd has toyed with the traditional British afternoon tea in the same way that Lewis Carroll played with logic in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, creating an afternoon tea filled with numerous gastronomic adventures. The Mad Hatter’s Afternoon Tea at Sanderson bursts with excitement. ‘Eat Me’ Queen of Hearts contains a strawberry and cream mousse and ‘Drink Me’, an enticing looking bottle containing a wonderful potion of apple pie, lemon curd and English toffee, this bizarre concoction will send taste buds hatter crazy with each sip delivering a totally different and contrasting taste experience as you drink through the layers with a straw.

Guests will be grinning like Cheshire Cats after blueberry lollipops turn their tongues from hot to cold and hazelnut praline ice cream lollipops explode with a single bite, and will be further indulged with a chocolate and coffee layered sponge cake and a chocolate rabbit’s clock that melts in ones mouth.

Finger sandwiches are served in a rainbow of colours, including ham and English mustard on yellow saffron bread and smoked salmon with cream cheese on green spinach bread. Traditional scones with clotted cream and jam will bring guests back to the real world during their fairytale tea.

I have no idea about the sweet and sour chicken, I've never made it as my bf hates it. However, Maybe you could make it from scratch rather than using the m&s sauce? The apple is healthy, so I think you could stick with that, specially if you are having scones in the afternoon.

Porridge is supposed to be better if you soak it overnight before cooking it, it makes the oats more tender. I'm not sure about cooking it too far in advance though, milk is better the fresher it is.

AAmy you r doing so great we all get those crazy craving days!! It will pass :) ....but If Rainbow does stop posting and describing such flabulous teas...I might start licking my phone screen!!!

AThanks tete- I think I managed it ok (about to go to bed now and such cravings have long sinced passed)

Thanks for the idea, Ruth- I'm not sure I can manage all of that, but you did give me some ideas to kick things up a notch!

This is what I plan to do (I hope like hell my boyfriend doesn't know about this diary...)

Afternoon tea:
Very good leaf tea and milk, served with scones (with clotted cream and Tiptree strawberry conserve), chocolate dipped strawberries, and these two slices:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/the-best-lemon-bars/detail.aspx
http://www.cuisine.com.au/recipe/Mrs-Atkins-fruit-slice

I'm going to serve the tea in my new (second hand) bone china cups and saucers, along with bone china plates to eat on, a bone china jug for milk, and two little containers for the cream and jam (two different patterns/ brands, and the cream and jam containers aren't the same shape- but hell, do I look like I have hundreds of pounds to spend on new?), with my ordinary ceramic teapot, and serve the food on my regular plates... with a twist. I have no idea if this will work or not, but I'm going to buy myself a really cheap block of chocolate, melt it, and attempt to draw patterns (probably hearts) with melted chocolate onto the plates with a spoon (if it doesn't work... the block of chocolate I have in mind costs 30p. No biggy), and then put them in the fridge to set.

If the shop in question has them when I go tomorrow, there's also a place where I can buy fake (and thus presumably reusable) red rose petals which I might decorate the table, and/ or... *cough*[/I ]other places... with.

Dinner:
I'll be making a variant on the first meal I ever cooked for my boyfriend. Sweet and sour chicken using Marks and Spencer sauce, but with better meat, vegetables, and using egg noodles rather than rice, followed by Sunflower's suggestion (a variant on the very simple thing I made for him a bit over a year ago, which seems too simple): http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/type-of-dish/sweet/baked-apple-and-almond-pudding.html with the best vanilla ice cream I can get my hands on.

I'll be buying most of the regular baking ingredients from Tesco (butter is butter is butter; sugar is sugar is sugar... right?), but for some of the special stuff I'm going to go to Marks and Spencer, Waitrose, or the butcher/ greengrocer nearby.

This probably means I'll be baking most of the weekend. (I already have one and probably two avenues for giving leftovers away, and I'll be putting out generous but not crazy portions of the stuff I'm making)

What do people think?

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled weight loss diet... :willy_nilly:

Speaking of which, I really need to think about joining a gym.

AAccording to Facebook, a status I wrote on this day last year was: "Dear body. I really despair of you. We need to lose weight, so I feed you a good, nutritious, decently portioned meal. Less than two hours later, you're complaining. What gives?" I saw that message this morning and laughed- I'm doing so much better now.

... Or so I thought.

So today I went into the city to get things to surprise my boyfriend with for our anniversary (trip largely a success). I'd sort of depended on Eat having a decent option, which they didn't, so I ended up going to Spud U Like and getting a jacket potato (their monthly special- tuna and bean salad- which was billed as low calorie). Can't find the calories online, but have guessed based on what was in it and what I can find on the company's website. I also had one of those 20-calories-for-the-whole-bottle flavoured waters that I sometimes resort to. So far, pretty good.

As I got onto the train station to make my way home, I started to feel incredibly hypoglycemic. Not buckets I can do about it at this stage. I sit on the train, stagger home, and have had some fruit for the sugar hit. ... And I wait for something to happen. ... And I still feel like crap. I don't know why or what to do about it. My boyfriend's coming over and I was going to cook dinner for us, but that would involve going out to get a staple. I don't feel safe going out at the moment, I feel like I might faint.

Not terribly pleased. (Not hungry, but not happy)

Makking porridge in advance even with water is not a good idea. Have you never tried to leftover porridge before. Its always hard and too thick to be nice.

Ait must be really bad having those fainting feelings.I have only had it a couple of times actually one time was recent about a week ago.I told my husband to stop the car.
I think it good you plan to have something in your bag for times like that.

How is everything?

AHope your feeling better....it must really suck to feel like that...so sorry!! I agree with Jasper..probably need to start carrying something with you :hug2:

AAMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

Get your bum back here! Your holiday's over, your anniversary is over, there are no more excuses now :D xxx

YOU CAN'T HIDE!!!!!!!

Hi Amy, Whatever is going on over there, i hope its something that will be gotten over and recovered from. I hope its not a tragedy. I hope its only something minor like falling off the wagon for a while. :hug2: You are in my thoughts.
