am i eating too much?

well i am trying to loose about 20-30 lbs and this is what i generally have

Breakfast:
small bowl of 2% milk and cereal

Lunch
white rice (3/4 cup), 2 or 3 vegetables and skinless chicken

Snack:
apple

Dinner
Pasta with chicken

As far as exercise goes i walk to the gym 6 days a week which is about 10 miles back and forth, spend about 20mins on the elptical machine and then 10 mins doing some basic weight exercises.....just wondering if that is ok or i need to step it up

i actually think you need to eat more!! but take the pasta away at dinner time, too late for all those carbs!! you should be getting about 6 meals a day, evenly spaced & sized, protein in each. your diet is key to losing weight. walking to the gym is great! maybe spend an hour (2 times a week) lifting, a full body routine is great for rasing the metabolism and burning fat!! and then after do about 30 min of cardio (maybe 5 times instead of 6, to ensure proper recovery). lifting then cardio is shown to burn the most Kcaloires!

How about some skim milk instead of that 2%. Yea i would advise spending a little more time at the gym with weights.

super advice

you should have much more veggies - like salads - and more fruit. much more veggies and fruits! either raw or steamed - most of your calories should be from veggies and whole grains. protein after that.

Hmmm, wrote a post earlier and Spockafina advised me to not do cardio after working out as I would be using muscle as fuel..If lifting plus cardio burns more calories, why wouldn't you do this to get cut up?

you were doing HIIT after lifting - totally different story

And for cutting, you really don't want to lose any muscle mass. For a man who is more concerned with muscle mass, etc., it would be detrimental to do cardio after lifting heavy and intense. However, for a woman looking to lose some weight, doing some steady-state cardio after some not-as-intense-or-heavy lifting would be okay. Although, I still recommend doing cardio and weights at different times during the day, if possible

So in your opinion, it's good to do weights and cardio on the same day to get cut? but at different times of the day?

Reason I ask is that my friend, who is quite lean and still has good amount of muscle, thinks that whenever I lift weights, I should do a "20 minute, moderate intensity cardio session" right after. He says this will get me cut.

Moreover, mreik and spock, do you both think that carbs should not be consumed late at night?

1.. if possible, lift then chug a protein shake, and then do some moderate intensity cardio. your metabolism will go into overdrive. which is great for cuttitng.

2.. either way you NEED carbs to recover. so it's probably more beneficial for you to work out earlier so you're not sleeping on the carbs you consume for you pwo meal. but even if you work out at 9 or 10 you have to consume carbs to ensure quick protein delivery, that's why it's probably better the earlier you workout. and no i don't think carbs should be consumed late. but this doesn't mean that at 6:59 you eat all the rice and stuff you can, because that's how most people take it. just limit yourself as the day gets later and later. control is everthing in a healthy diet.

no doubt mreik, i understand where you're going. sounds like you know your stuff and I'm trying to keep carbs down at night.

but I was curious about situation #1

Firstly, where did you here about this idea that a shake in between will get the metabolism "in overdrive?" It sounds like it would make sense though.

secondly, today I'm gonna work back biceps and abs. and i would like to do moderate cardio after. and having a protein shake sounds great after, but I am not sure about your timing. Should I

immediately after lifting, take a shake, then immediately jump onto the treadmill / stat. bike?

immediately after lifting, take a shake, then go do cardio maybe an hour or 2 later?

immediately after lifting, take a shake, then go do cardio much later in the day, say 5-8 hours later?

many thanks

that's more-or-less what my response was going to be
