Am I doing something wrong?

Hi All!,

Newby on board! I was just hoping to gain some advice from those of you that have some experience with this sort of thing..

I'm currently on a very low calorie diet (ketosis inducing) so am consuming between 500 - 650 calories a day which includes around 40-50 grams of carbs per day. I'm working out 5-6 times a week, doing 30 mins of toning and cardio, and consuming between 3-4 litres of flavoured water (water flavouring that isn't supposed to affect ketosis, from keediet.com). Despite my efforts I only seem to be losing around a pound a week! And some weeks I don't lose anything!

I was wondering whether this is muscle mass? I didn't think this amount of exercise would create this problem, but this is just a guess. Could the water flavouring be the issue? Despite the claims? Any ideas would be appreciated. :)

Low calorie diets don't induce ketosis, low carbs do.

500-650 calories a day is dangerously low to the point that it should not be done without medical supervision

The flavoured water likely just doesn't have any sugar in it. wouldn't make a difference.

Exercise looks fine but only with a more reasonable calorie count.

You don't say how long you've been trying to lose weight, it's possible you've just hit a plateau. can happen to anyone on any diet.

switching things up or relaxing the rules for a bit can help break through.

Thanks for your reply, I'm having a check up with my GP every 28 days to ensure I remain healthy, forgot to mention that :) I didn't think you could plateau on this low a calorie diet but I'm not sure why I thought that so thanks I'll give it a break for a couple of days and assess the results in the weeks to come, I started in September and have lost 20lbs, but still have another 65lbs to go to reach my ideal.

Wow 20lbs since sept is fantastic! Great work!

There may be a few things that you might want to look into that could be contributing to a lack of loss:

1) Simple plateau like Tourny mentioned. It can happen a lot and can cause frustration

2) You're body is building muscle mass which is counteracting your weight loss

3) Your lack of calories (which is really low, an ave woman should have 1500cals a day) may be causing your body to store fat because it believes it's in danger

4) You need to switch up your exercise as your body has become accustomed to what you are doing?

What kind of exercise are you doing? Are you incorporating both weight and cardio? are you switching the activities up? For instance are you running one day and biking the next?

Good luck! I hope figure out what is going on, it is very frustrating to work so hard and not see results!
