Am I actually fat?

This might sound silly but i dont know what fat is and before I embark on counting calouries I want to be sure I have actually gone fat!

Hi, im a 22 year old male in the UK. Ive always been of a very slim build and quite 'fit', I used to excercise regulary and could run sub 8's. Then life took a turn and I had what you would call a crash and burn hedonistic lifestyle. Not gonna go into it but things were bad (living on cans of stella and not sleeping for days). I recently turned my life around ive quit fags and booze etc eat much healthier than the majority and started to look normal again!

My problem is ive developed a Golum style belly (not quite that exagerated but you get my point) I dont know how long its been like this for life has been a bit wierd for a while. I havnt got as far as I can see any fat on any other part of my body and am still really really quite skinny (to the point it doesnt look good) in comparison to most people. I can also tense my golum belly solid as brick like muscle and only pinch a miniscule amount of skin. Im jus confused is this fat or have I got a football in my stomach haha. I cant afford to lose weight off ANY other part of my body... there just isnt any there.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

there's no way to spot reduce, so you can't really concentrate on one area to lose weight... And toning is a matterof reducing the fat so that the muscles show...

I would check the workout thread in the weight loss thru exercise section and start concentrating on working out and also on eatiing properly... and keepng track of your calories for a month or two and see what happens.

Cardios have always worked for me. I lose weight in my stomach area first, and I do aerobics, either walking or jogging. That and a sensible diet should get you on your way.

Hi!

What is your height and weight now? A distended abdomen can be due to slack abdominal muscles. Also, fat doesn't always have to be subcutaneous, people also have varying levels of intramuscular fat (called marbling in beef ;) )

A gradual decrease in lean muscle mass, due to hard living and being unkind to yourself offset by a gain in intramuscular fat may result in you looking the same (more or less), but being in reality a good bit less healthy.

But probably determining how many calories a day you require to stay the weight you are, choosing a healthful diet, coupled with a sensible fitness program (er, programme) is all you will need.
