Am I a freak?

Hello all,
In in my late forties and have gradually put weight on over the years. I tried low carb for two years, felt great on that, eating real none processed food but didn't lose pound. Tried 5:2 for the first half of last year and it worked OK but only half a pound a week. If I was on holiday for a week or two I'd put between three and six pounds which put me back six to twelve weeks.
I lost interest and went off the rails in the last third of last year. I was going to the pub 3, 4 or 5 times a week and drinking around six pints a time. In December this increased. My weight was static at 259lbs. On Jan 2nd I stopped alcohol completely and kept food the same because my weight had been static so i thought removing beer would be a good start. Now for the bad bit. I have gone up to 265lbs. I'll admit I have occasionally had a small chocolate bar when I would have been having 6+ pints but it doesn't add up.
Any ideas?

Some of your holiday gain may have been sodium related - and you may well benefit from drinking plenty of water and checking your sodium.

Well I'm not really complaining about holiday weight per se. I was just saying that when I was on 5:2, it would take week to lose each half pound that was put on during my holidays, so if I took a two week break, it would take 12-18 weeks to lose it but, during that time I would be away for a weekend somewhere putting on another couple of pounds so another 4 weeks of 5:2 to lose.
My main complaint was that my weight was static going to the pub between 3 and 5 times a week, I cut out the alcohol, kept food the same with maybe the odd small choc bar instead of 6+ pints of beer and I actually put weight on!!!!!!!!!

You can carry a lot of water weight because of sodium consumption and not enough water... I really would look into that aspect as it impacts a lot of people...

As for reasons why things changed - maybe your lifestyle was subtly different e.g. maybe you did more exercise...

I understand what you are saying about water loss and exercise BUT, the ONLY thing that changed was the REMOVAL of beer, between 18 and 30 pints a week so why did my weight increase?????

Did you log all your food and stepcounts over that period.
I think that everyone should wear a pedometer all the time and monitor their stepcounts as they go... It is an easy indicator of how active we are being which can pay enormous dividend - especially for people that are big - because walking is one of the best forms of exercise and most of us can manage it - even if we are pretty big when we start out...
I used to record mine on this forum - I think that somewhere on the forum there is at least a couple of years' worth of my daily data...
I actually had a huge spreadsheet that I updated for years and years - and only posted some of the data on the forum...
Monitoring such things really helps to track down when habits change and we do not notice things...

It can be all too easy to think that nothing has changed when things have that cause a difference...

I get a gain whenever I have bread or cheese - at all - 1 slice of either will guarantee to give me a gain - no matter what my total calories for the day... Monitoring things helps you to spot patterns like that...

I never noticed when I went high sodium because I was having healthy home made soups - and using stock cubes that had high sodium... I knew that they were low calorie... I cut it out and dropped 12 pounds almost immediately... I had dieted away that amount of fat - but it was being masked because I was carrying all that water weight from the soup... All I needed to do was cut out the high sodium food and ensure that I drank enough water...

Nothing has changed except the following, I cut out beer and I added the occasional chocolate bar on the nights I would have beer so calorie wise I am much much lower. My food intake is pretty regimented, I go out twice a week for evening meal and pretty much order the same, Monday evening I have chicken breast, green veg of some kind and jacket potato, Tuesday evening similar, Wed out, Thursday pork fillet veg jacket potato, Friday out, Saturday a two egg omelette for brekkie, lunch a sandwich somewhere while we are out, usually walking around the countryside come rain or sun, Sat evening a steak with jacket potato (occasionally a take away) and Sunday a slice of toast for brekkie, a roast dinner and a sandwich for supper (I'm a little set in my ways). My job is fairly repetitive and I am on my feet for 9 hours solid with a 15 minute break at 9am (I start work at 6:30) and a 30 minute break at 12:30, I do this 5 days a week. I don't currently do any exercise but that has been the same for over a year. I used to be a dedicated bodybuilder until a bad gym accident wrecked my shoulder.
So am I a biological freak? My wife says she is giving my body to medical research lol.

On top of that I used to get the munchies big time after a drink and would have snacks late at night which I now don't do.
