Alternatives to cola?

Hey everyone.

One thing I've always had some difficulty with is giving up soda. I love the non-diet, high-sugar carbonated beverages.

Trouble is, the only alternative that I can see that has any amount of flavor is fruit juice but wouldn't it figure that my favorite juice, orange juice is almost as bad as soda.

I've googled "alternatives to soda" and found stuff like green tea, water, low fat milk... I don't really like tea, I can't really stand water (no flavor) and low fat milk is nasty to me. Give me the whole milk any day.

I don't like diet soda. In fact, I hate the stuff. They say that diet Dr. Pepper tasted so close to the original that most people can't tell the difference. I can. I'm beginning to think I'm close to a super-taster where I can detect the subtle differences in flavor. That and a lot of diet sodas contain stuff that is questionable in terms of health. You give up the calories and the sugar in favor of cancer? No thanks.

I'd also like to free myself of the soda addiction because my pop (pardon the pun) is prone to kidney stones and soda is a leading contributor to them.

I'm actually fearful of giving up soda cold-turkey because I have a caffeine withdrawal problem - I get migraines pretty frequently and the sudden lack of caffeine can trigger a doozy.

I'm the same way, artificial sweeteners taste like battery acid to me. I don't care what they say about serving it ice cold, etc.. that crap just tastes like a can full of nasty no matter what you try to convince yourself of.

Now me, I was mostly addicted to the bite and fizz. Yes, I drank Coke, not that flat tasting, overly sweet Pepsi garbage most other weaklings enjoy. Its a hit on sodium, but what I did to help kick it? Seltzer water. Takes a slight bit of adjustment, but it worked well for me.

Soda pop is the one thing I have given up cold turkey. I haven't had a drop of it in over a year, and I used to guzzle quite a bit of it. I don't use any of that awful tasting artificial sweetener either. I drink water, tea, coffee, buttermilk, and vegetable juice. Oh, and the occasional beer.

My orthodontist made me give up soda when I had braces in high school. After a while I didn't miss it, I don't really even like it anymore. If I want something other than water (or coffee) I'll either drink a zero cal powerade on ice or some of the sobe ones are good too. I like tea, so I drink a lot of tea too. If you like mint I'd recommend the Moroccan mint green tea or peppermint. There are a lot of flavors of tea out there--orange, berry, earl grey, black currant, etc. and many of them are just as good cold as hot. Buy the samplers. There's got to be something out there that you'll like. Try new things.

Really, how can you not like water?

Diet Root Beer is usually pretty good. Diet Mountain dew isn't too bad. Still, really water >> all. Its flavorless, ya, but its satisfying with no calories.

I used to feel the same way you did, then I stopped drinknig soda (not a conscious decision, I moved out of my parents and I just never bought it myself.) You quickly get over that.

There are these Ice Tea Packet things from lipton that actually are pretty good and like 0 or 5 calories per, so its something you might want to look into.

I dont really like soda but I drink Coconut Water w/ Guava in it. You can buy them in individual serving sizes at a local health food store. Very good IMO.

This is my problem too. I love the fizz! I'm not a huge fan of water, but I might have to try the seltzer water. It definitely couldn't hurt...lol!

And...."weaklings" huh???? :toetap05: HAHAHA!

It depends on how much of a taster you are... You can get sugar free Torani syrups and put them in seltzer water and it's not bad. Add a bit of cream and make a cherry cream soda or vanilla cream if you want...

However, I overcame my dislike of fake sweeteners by stopping all caffeinated beverages for 6 months. When I finally returned to soda... I discovered that I no longer had the intense dislike of the fake sugars. Apparently the time off reset my taste buds or something...
