Alligatorob's Diary

It was a good day, I ate well and did some gardening that I think passes for exercise. I did not feel great, just tired not sick, and the weather was lousy, windy cold and spitting a little snow. So no walk, and the gym is closed. I did get some bands to see if I can do some exercises whilst the gym stays closed, but did not use them today. The weather is supposed to be better tomorrow and I hope to feel better, so maybe a walk.
Didn't your trainer give you home exercise?
In the last week or so she has been talking about what I could do at home, but I think both she and I were in a kind of denial about the coming closing. I will figure out something.
Rattlesnakes! Wow. Have you ever encountered one?
Lots of them, we have a number of different varieties of rattlesnakes in the US, and have them in most states. Used to kill them, but now know better, they are a part of the natural system. Though I probably would still kill one if it was in my yard. When I was a kid I killed a very large eastern diamondback in my grandmother's yard, that snake probably weighed over 40 pounds. They are poisonous, and a bite is serous, but not usually deadly. When it warms up I will have to be careful on my hikes, lots of them in the mountains around here.
Keep up your walking and cycling
I will, and will try to find something to keep my upper body exercised.
This will all pass at some point
Petal, you are right of course, and we all need to keep that in mind. Someday this will all seem a strange memory.
I've often speculated that was the case when I gained, but I'm pretty sure I was just fooling myself.
Thanks Jack, think I will go with your speculation!
in that short amount of time after starting the weight gain in your muscles is water
Ok, I'll take it, water in the muscles is still better than fat.
Don´t want to burst anyone´s bubble
I'm not so sure about that, I think you kind of like bursting our bubbles lol. Actually LaMa I appreciate your honesty and straightforward ways, not to mention that you are usually right. You are welcome to burst my bubbles any time.

:D I genuinely don't. If someone is just indulging in a little illusion I generally let them be but when others come in to confirm the fake news I do think it's my job to speak up. Thanks for the permission though; I feel less bad about it when I know people want to be informed.

Exercise bands are excellent for upper body exercise, especially if you have some kind of sturdy, smooth hook or bar at around hip or navel height and somewhere overhead to sling them around and change the direction of your resistance.

Cate I like your signature . I'm going to hijack Robs diary now and post a video I saw that made laugh . Anyone who gets offended by bad language should not watch .

Rob I'm sorry you were feeling a bit off . Think we all get days like that and with gym closing it's a bit of a disappointment. Hopefully you will be bouncing back with gusto on Sunday

It was a good day, I ate well, exercised, and feel good. I tried the waterfall hike again, still didn't make it. The allure of the fabled waterfalls is strong, but the trail is tough and my knees a bit unsteady. There are supposed to be 3 waterfalls, maybe even a city of gold (no one has mentioned that one yet, but I can hope) at trails end. I believe I was more than half-way when I turned back. The parts of the trial I did get up were quite steep and rocky, but a bit less treacherous than the trail I tired the last time. I got to a point where what passed as a trail was gone, taken out by a slide over winter looks like. I could see where a couple of people had gotten around the spot, but I suspect they were younger and better fit than I. Turn around point, no visible trail because its not there, just a steep slide to a cliff:

The mountains just east of here are quite rugged, so all trails are rugged as well. None are really proper trails, not for humans anyway. I think they are just animal trails us humans try to use. I suspect I will find a way around this spot and eventually make it to those golden waterfalls in the sky, but it will take a few more attempts. A nice view along the way:

This time I wore proper hiking boots, carried a walking stick (big help), notified people where I was going, and chose a dry day. And I turned back before I wanted to, but short of disaster. I was happy to be out in the wilds, and did not see another sole on the walk. Had it all to myself!

It is very similar to our cheeky, Australian one.
I don't know much about the Australian sense of humor, but I think I would like it.
I'm sorry you were feeling a bit off
Thanks Petal, I was mostly back, but still seemed to tire easier than I should have. After the hike I did some gardening, prep for vegetable planting, but it wasn't easy and I gave up after a couple of hours. Hopefully energy is up tomorrow.
Sorry you are feeling a bit off, I’m sure today will be better.
Thanks Emily, it was better today, hopefully even better tomorrow.
I will have it bouncing around my head all day
It was mine!

Lovely photos again Rob. thanks for posting those. You look very healthy and well in the great outdoors :)Those rock formations in the background look really neat. Just a beautiful area. Glad you are taking on some safety precautions of letting people know where you are going, wearing proper footwear, and turning back when unsafe.
Sounds like a really active day with both hiking and gardening. Good for you!

Sounds wonderful! And especially that second picture is gloriously beautiful. The angel folks are a bit weak today though :p 1265 was the year (real) Budweiser beer started to get brewed. I have some in the fridge but thankfully not from that first batch.

Love the photo of the golden jagged cliffs!
Smart move, to be wearing the proper hiking boots and carrying a stick. I'm currently in the place where I left my hiking boots, years ago - inspired by you, I might try hauling them out - not that I'll be able to use them for a good while yet, I expect, i.e. not until this shutdown's over.

Rob I have a feeling you will perservere somewhat with reaching those waterfalls . Just take it easy . Maybe find a local walking fanatic who might know a route .
Good day though by all accounts

I am glad you are taking a few more precautions on your walks, Rob. The landscape where you are looks so different from ours. It looks truly wild. Well done on yet another 2 lbs down!

It was a good day, I am back to 100%, don't know why I wasn't the last couple of days. I ate well and got in a good walk.

I tried my walk from home and got farther and higher than before. I found a more passable route, not really a trail but not quite as steep as before. I managed to cover 3.8 miles (6.1 km) with an elevation rise of 925 ft (282 m). The most yet. It took me a bit over 2.5 hours, still a rough and slow climb, just not quite as bad as before. And when I turned around I could see possible paths to get higher, just game trails but possibilities. For the first time I was turned back by just being tired and not an impassible way. Where I turned around.

I made it to the elevation of the old ice age Lake Bonneville shoreline (Lake Bonneville - Wikipedia ). Lake Bonneville was formed as the glaciers melted, it covered much of Northern Utah and into Nevada, the highest shoreline is a quite visible feature on the mountains in our area. The Great Salt Lake is what's left of the old Lake Bonneville. In the picture I am standing on the old shoreline, and if you look at the mountains in the distance you can see a strait line feature. the old shoreline. You can also get a sense as to how far up the mountain I got, and how much further I would have to go to get to the top. I am beginning to suspect that even if I can build the strength to make it finding a passable route may not be possible. But I have at least 6 months to try, until the fall snow flies.

No stream pictures today, I stayed on the face of the mountain and out of the canyon, to the old lake shore that seemed to work better, don't know from here on.
Those rock formations in the background look really neat
They are, and we have a lot of such rock formations, all you have to do is hike up one of the trails to find them.
The angel folks are a bit weak today though :p 1265 was the year (real) Budweiser beer started to get brewed.
Sorry I missed that one, Budweiser is important! I assume you are talking about the Czech beer, Budweiser Budvar, the original Budweiser. I have had it, but it is hard to find in the US.
Love the photo of the golden jagged cliffs!
Thanks, I liked that picture, it was morning the the sun had just hit the rocks, I was still in shadows in the canyon. The higher resolution pictures is even better, but too big to post here.
I have a feeling you will persevere somewhat with reaching those waterfalls . Just take it easy
I hope to, and I have been asking around, it is amazing to me how few people here actually hike our canyons. I am yet to find anyone who has actually gotten to the waterfalls, only people who have been told they are there. I am still calling them the fabled waterfalls, and who knows maybe the golden city is there too. I am trying to take it a bit easier, push myself where I can, but not over the edge of a cliff!
The landscape where you are looks so different from ours. It looks truly wild.
I have to believe Australia has some very wild and rugged places. I am always surprised in Utah how close to town you can find these wild places, just head up into the mountains.
It looks like you have great visibility in that purple LSU sweatshirt
Yes, nothing understated about our school colors! I figure with that sweatshirt should I fall over a cliff body location and identification will be easier, not many Utahans have LSU shirts.
Congratulations on two more pounds lost!
Thanks LaMa, and Liza, it does feel good.
