Alligatorob's Diary

Nice pic of the buffalo! Seems like you have some good trails to go to if you want to go again. Did you go with a group or by yourself?

I probably rode 3 or 4 miles and gained about 300 ft elevation on a rough trail. Enough to tire me out. It was fun, a motivation to keep riding regularly so I can go further next time.
Finding a type of exercise you actually enjoy makes SUCH a difference! Also: I tend to be terrified of any and all wild cattle so I´m not mad you didn´t get closer to that bison to take its portrait. I´ll be saying hi to the wild boar for the first time in months today though, and am really looking forward to it (from a very safe distance).

Rob coincidentally I think for me it was around may 15 too . Yes I had a serious wake up call that morning as the weather was warming and I had nothing to fit me. You know that feeling when you can't sit because your clothes are too tight. I remember deciding to start the classes and I'm not sure if I started that Wednesday or the next . I must look in my book. Also I had been feeling unwell ,sluggish, bad stomach etc . Within 1 week I felt much better.

I love the sound of your mountain bike-ride! This is so good - a real non-scale victory! And thank you for sharing it - it's just terrific to read about - and great to see the photo of the bison as well. To see that would really give an edge to a bike-ride, I expect! (I can only admire the law-abiding nature of your local buffalo/bison, too, sticking to the non-attack rules the way they do!)
I think a female Iron Rooster should be an Iron Hen. :p Now there's a superhero they haven't thought about yet - the Astonishing Adventures of Iron Hen! (bok-bok-bok-bok!)

Just got back from a slightly less successful ride. I went east, into the colder snowier regions, to Mantua, the trail around the lake I did last fall. Short story is I fell on the ice and did not make it all the way around. I made the mistake of riding on a very icy patch, my wheels just slid out sideways. No damage done except to my ego, but don't think I'll be trying it again until spring. The guy at the bike shop told me they sell studded tires for riding on ice, but don't think I'll go that way. I should have known when I saw no bike tire tracks, and only ice fishermen and a few maintenance trucks, that it just wasn't a good biking idea.

I did however ride about 4 miles, I was almost at the half way point when I fell and turned back, the second half had more snow on it, further from road access and less packing. So I got in a good workout and feel fine, will just be looking west for winter riding adventures now.

This is quite close to our house, less than 4 miles, but the road is steep and winding, one day I will ride to Mantua, do the loop, and home. Not this winter though.

Yesterday's ride, just a few miles west no snow and not quite so cold, a big difference.

Did you go with a group or by yourself?
By myself, don't think many others would want to ride with someone as slow as I. Maybe when I get better at it, the nearby bike shop does organize groups, but they seem to be folks of your age, not mine.

You should be, these bison are wild animals, never domesticated, and quite large, up to 1,000 lbs. They can appear quite docile and it is often easy to walk up to one, but if they feel cornered or threatened they will charge and that can be deadly. If you watch the hair on their neck closely you can tell when you are too close (I think anyway, worked for me so far). Bison kill more tourists in Yellowstone than the bears, it just doesn't make news stories as exciting. https://www.yellowstonepark.com/news/teen-gored-bison

May 15 must be a lucky day. Thanks for your response Petal, it sounds like you did have some triggering things that turned the switch. Maybe I did, but I don't remember them.

Makes sense Amy, I'll be looking for your first Iron Hen short!

Domesticated cows kill tourists almost every year here. Usually because people are clueless. I´m glad you didn´t get hurt and got a good ride in!

Not getting too close to bison seems like a very good idea. In Sri Lanka people do the same- pose for selfies with wild elephants. In Greece, they stand on the edge of cliffs at Meteora & fall off. There are so many people in the world so keen on getting selfies that they risk their lives. Crazy world!
Hope your next ride is more enjoyable, Rob.

Rats! I'm sorry you had the slither and slip and fall on the ice. :( The track certainly does look very tricky to ride on - even to walk on in places. No damage to either you or the bike? You didn't have to walk home? I hope not. I hope there was hot cocoa or something similar when you got back - a comfortable chair by the fire! :)

But it's still a pretty impressive NSV - who'd have thought, a year ago, that that would be you, out there, pushing into the icy wind, biking around the lake? Fantastic!

It was a good day, ate well, got an icy bike ride in, and I feel good.

Now that China is off I am making some plans to go to Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia to visit relatives and old friends. It will be my first vacation in a while, I think I will fly out next Sunday and be gone about 10 days. I will try to keep up here, and with my diet, its important. May not be able to weigh in though, the least of things.

We are supposed to get a foot or more snow tonight, I hope not, but I don't hold much sway with the deciders on this one.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense, cows can get pretty big. I had an uncle with a ranch in south Florida, he ran Brahman cattle, and they were quite aggressive.

Yep, no shortage of people trying out for the Darwin awards. The buffalo in the picture is about as close as I ever get to them.

No damage, except to my ego. I just got back on and kept riding, though after the fall I was a lot more careful. Riding on that snow and ice was a lot of work, harder than on a dry road.
The snow looks so pretty though!
Yeah, and we are supposed to get more tonight. I've had enough of that pretty.

In 1001 Leif Eriksson established the first known European settlement in North America (if you don't count Greenland as North America). His settlement was ill-fated, it would be almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus would come back for a second try. My middle name is Eric, and my father always told me that I had been named for Leif.

Most cattle here isn´t aggressive but there are plenty of hiking trails that run through pastures and people get too close, either for pictures or to try and pet the animals (especially when calves are around...) or they make the cows nervous by bringing along dogs where they shouldn´t. And sometimes the beasties ARE in a bad mood, you do everything "right" and you´re still glad to come away with your life.

My grandpa raises cattle. When I was a kid, he favored Herefords. They're pretty sweet and docile, but they went out of fashion and he transitioned to black Angus. The Angus are definitely more aggressive.

It was a good day, I ate well and feel good. I ate less than my 1,000 calorie minimum goal, but I ate good food. I just have not been hungry the past few days, right now I feel too full to eat anything more. I have decided to just go with this and see where it leads, I am feeling fine, not tired, weak or hungry, in fact better than I have felt in a while. I won't starve myself or let it go too long, but may just go along for the ride for now. Never in my life has this happened to me before, its a very unique experience for me.

Hey Cory, that's cool, got to love a cattle ranch.

In 808 the Vikings first raided the Baltic coast, not long after the first raids on England. No idea as to Ragnar Lothbrok's (Ragnar shaggy breeches in English) involvement or lack there of. If Ragnar actually existed it would have been around his time. The History channel story suggests he only went west not east, and that's probably as accurate as any other source.

Oh dear, Rob, that’s so few calories especially when you’re exercising. I think you’ve squashed your appetite into non-existence. I will say though, you did look healthy in that last photo of you. I worry about you.

Do you log your food into an app that tells you what nutrient/protein levels you're getting?
Or do you see a nutritionist?
Glad you are feeling well, but it can be good to keep track of what you're actually taking in for nutrients.

Looking at your last picture I don't think your extreme approach is still warranted. And the fact your daily calories have been getting even lower than they already were has me worried you could be getting a bit obsessive about the whole process. Might it be time to transition into "normal" weightloss calories for a guy your age? 1500 kcal/day perhaps?

Rob, :iagree: with Rob & LaMa. I am getting even more worried about you too. I don't see that you can be getting enough nutrition. It is such a fine line between healthy dieting & obsession. We want you to be healthy xo

Hey Rob. I partially agree with others.
If I were you, I would pay an attention on how I feel and eat in next days more carefully. If this pace continues for a week od more you should probably actively increase your calorie intake.

For now on I don't think it's dangerous, we all sometimes have few low calorie days, same as we have days when we feel we simply have to eat a bit more. Just take care of yourself.

Echoing all those above, Rob in saying take good care of yourself. You certainly looked healthy - looked great! - in your picture with cowboy hat, and I know you've cleared things with your doctor, but still... that's awfully short commons. :(
Maybe take a three-month break, as I'm doing? A maintenance break! Join the Adventures in Maintenance gang for a while? - after all, it was you who instigated the thread! :)

Ok, y'all got my attention. If so many of my forum friends express concern I guess I need to listen. Thanks! I just had my usual cereal and kefir breakfast but added a banana, another 100 calories. I will try to eat a few more calories as the day goes on, it should make it easier to finish above 1,000.
I think you’ve squashed your appetite into non-existence
Yes, that seems to be the case, I would never have thought it possible.
Do you log your food into an app that tells you what nutrient/protein levels you're getting?
Yes, if you click on my thumbnails you can see it. But to be honest I don't know much about, I try to keep the fats low and protein high but that's about all.
Looking at your last picture I don't think your extreme approach is still warranted
I really want to stick with it until I get below the obesity line, for me that's still 30+ pounds away. Not bad for a guy who started ~130 lbs above it, but not there yet. I am quite skilled at hiding my fat in pictures, many years of practice. Difference is now it kind of works, hard to hide 100+ pounds.
It is such a fine line between healthy dieting & obsession.
Oh, I think I crossed that one a while back, the obsession part anyway, I do try and keep it healthy. I know I am obsessed with counting my calories and posting, just the way I have gotten to be. Its one of the reasons I worry about the transition to maintenance, the obsession will end one day, I hope to be able to figure out how to do that and keep the weight off.
If I were you, I would pay an attention on how I feel and eat in next days more carefully.
Actually it has been going on for a week or so, some days I had to force some end of day eating to bring my calories up, and in all honesty some days I inflated my calorie count to make it look like I was eating more. That last one is not a good thing, I am going to end it, an honest calorie count is important. I agree that for my health I don't think the low calories are too dangerous, but it may make transition to maintenance harder, when that day comes.
Maybe take a three-month break, as I'm doing? A maintenance break! Join the Adventures in Maintenance gang for a while? - after all, it was you who instigated the thread!
No Amy, it was you who started the thread, but I did encourage it. I appreciate it, like I said I have been worried about maintainance for a while, seeing others do it helps. I do think I will follow your example, but as I recall you only started your break after getting out of the obese range, that is my plan as well. As much as I have any real plan, I do better thinking of this as one day at a time than looking too far into the future.

Thanks all, this is a great place for support and advice!
