Alligatorob's Diary

Rob you have prodded me on on my many many plateaus over the last 8 weeks . So you know it’s just one of those weeks and most likely you will have a good loss next week. Your plan is working fantastically well so you know it works . I do concur a bit with sunflower that upping water or indeed calories for a day might give it a start . The body gets accustomed to things so a little trick on it might be helpful. Wish I coins do that lake walk sounds great .
well done on the 31 laps , 3 miles that is really impressive . Congratulations

I say go for it too, Rob, but maybe up your calories for the day. I don't think it would hurt at this stage to add some more protein to your diet (after the ride) to get up to at least 1200 a day. It's a bit like thirst. You are not meant to wait until you are thirsty to have a drink. I know you don't get hungry but maybe your body might need some more nutrition. I won't pretend to know enough about nutrition & am going to see a dietician soon, but I do worry that you are not eating enough.
31 laps are very impressive. Well done!!

I love the sound of the lake ride, and I'm joining with all of your cheer squad above to say go for it! :)
Though adding the proviso that both the above posts sound pretty wise about nutrition, and also not to go is the weather looks bad in any way - too hot, too, windy, too rainy, too cold. But otherwise, yes, go, and have a wonderful time and feel triumphant and magnificent at the end!

Agree with all of that and want to add my part: if you're not sure you can do it pack a snack and allow yourself to take a break in between at some point.

Thanks all, I am pretty determined to do it, so long as the weather holds. Amy, no chance it will be too hot! But if I am lucky it will probably be 10 C with the sun shining. My greatest risk is wind, and I can do some wind.

It was a good day, my eating wasn't perfect, its my first 2 junk food type snack day, but the calories are fine, and I feel good. Will try to get through tomorrow without the junk food. For calories I am trying something new, a few months back someone here recommended cronometer.com for food tracking, I signed up and never used it, until today. I am still trying to figure it out, some of the calories I know are wrong, the only important one was for the soup I had for dinner. I know the calories were about double what the website says, its homemade and I know what went into it. So I doubled the portion and got close. I'll try using it for a while, it does give you a lot of information. Though translating it into something I can post here was't simple.

In 1029 BC, or so Saul became the first King of the Kingdom of Israel and Judah. He is supposed to have reigned for 40 years, to the age of 68 when he committed suicide in battle to avoid being captured by the Philistines. His son in law David eventually succeed him, after a fight with Saul's only surviving son. King David is better known, to me anyway. It seems a little hard to sort out history from legend here, but it probably doesn't matter.

Rob that looks like an interesting tool. I tried Mfp for a while. Time constraints gets me . That's a huge defiancy in calories no wonder you are losing weight. Like Cate says I would like to see some more protein in your diet. But also I know very little about nutrition and what you are doing is working !!

Agreed about the protein. You´re trying to maintain as much muscle mass as you can, especially if you want to further improve your biking. If you had to double the calories for your soup the nutrition info they use is probably off quite a bit as well. Can you input and reuse your own recipes?

41 laps, a new high by 10. I felt like I could keep going, but 40 minutes of elevated heart rate (I assume) and hard breathing was probably enough.

I was thinking the ride I plan for Saturday was 4.1 miles and these laps are about 0.1 miles so I thought I'd see if I could do it, and I did. Now I see the ride is actually 4.2 miles, but 41 laps is close enough, the 0.1 miles is just a WAG. Here is where I am headed - Mantua Reservoir Dike Trail

Rob that looks so beautiful and achieveable for you . You are going to be so happy . Make sure you bring a snack and drink . I will be hit and miss getting here over the weekend but I will be dying to hear all about it

Rob- that does look wonderful. Do you have a drink bottle attachment on your bike? I'm looking forward to hearing about your ride too. I think this is marvellous that you have taken to riding. Go Rob :D

That ride looks absolutely right! :) Fresh air, an even, well-maintained bike-path, lovely views, maybe a little breeze from across the lake... oh, I'm really looking forward to hearing how you go - well, I know I'm not the only one who's doing that! And I love that somewhere in the future - next year, maybe after the summer heat has gone? - there's Eagle Rise waiting, as well! Go, you, indeed! :D

Nice on the calorie counter app, Rob! Good call. I think you'll like it after some adjustment and then you won't want to go back. The mountain biking calorie estimate is too high it looks like but any app estimate or estimate you get online for any type of exercise is going to be a full on WAG. It's not easy at all estimating exercise calories with any level of accuracy or reliability.

Thanks all, I am not sure I will keep it, but will for a while anyway. Rob, you are probably right about the mountain bike calories consumed thing, I did it again today, but may drop it. I am more focused on the calories I eat right now than on the ones I burn. How many calories per minute or hour do you think the biking would burn? I did a calculation on Google Earth that says its about a 5% slope, all up and down, in gravel. According to Google I gain about 12.9 ft per lap, so about 530 ft total up, and the same down, in the 41 laps. Not sure about the accuracy of Google at this small scale, I was guessing it was 10 ft per lap, but that was just a WAG. This app has made me more aware of protein, and I think y'all are right I need to up it a bit. Today I got more, I ate some sardines just for that reason.

Dinner was a bit unplanned, its my wife's birthday and I asked her where she wanted to go for dinner, she surprised me by saying the local soup kitchen. Its a place that serves free food to the homeless and anyone who comes in. We live in a small town without many homeless so to fill it they get a lot of poorer people and some elderly who live alone. My wife does volunteer work for them, helping collect food donations and cooking, but she had never eaten there. So we gave it a try. It was an interesting experience, and the food was better than I had expected. I did figure out how to make a donation, not paying for the food didn't feel right. There was no choice of food in the main line, you just got a plate dished up for you. So I ate half the ham, potatoes, and roll, and all of the green beans. I didn't go to the desert line. I think I did fine.

The soup kitchen is once a week in space donated by our local Eagles Club. In Utah real bars are illegal, but they have loopholes for clubs, so the Eagles is a fraternal organization doing good for the community, and maintaining a full service bar. My kind of community service club! My step son is a member and he came by to see my wife, he got us out the back door of the soup kitchen and into the bar, so the evening ended well. Its the most alcohol I have consumed in a while, but still a lot less than I used to drink. Kind of interesting to sneak out the backdoor of the soup kitchen leaving the homeless and alcoholics to get to the bar, but fun.

Saint Wulfric also known as Wulfric of Haselbury was born in 1080. In his youth he lived a relatively affluent lifestyle doing a lot of hunting. He became and priest and after a conversion with a beggar decided to move into a small cell next to the church and live a very spartan existence. People started to visit him and he became a famed miracle worker and kind of fortune teller. The only thing I can find that he seems to have done is to tell King Henry I, correctly, that he would die soon. He lived the last 29 years of his life in the small cold cell devoting much of his time to reading the Bible and praying. He also deprived himself of sleep, ate a frugal meatless diet, spent hours reciting the psalms sitting in a bath of cold water, and wearing a hair shirt. In 2009 a Wulfric Festival was apparently held in his memory with three days of music and fun. Some how I don't think Wulfric would have approved.

That's a very interesting choice of places to eat on your birthday. I think I would like your wife. Glad you upped your protein Rob, but why did you leave half your ham? Was it really fatty?

That’s definitely a different type of night out for a birthday! It’s kind of fun sneaking into bars when those times should be long gone though, haha.

Well done on the 41 laps. I knew you were more than capable.

:rotflmao: Why ever not?! Also: great job on the 41 laps. Maybe give your legs a rest today to be fresh for Saturday. Also also: your wife sounds wonderful.

I'm not sure about biking, Rob, but I ran a quick Google search and used the top 3 sites.

Inputs were 67, 5'10'', 259, 40 minutes, 4 miles and I got:
438 from this one Calorie Calculator - MapMyRide
288 from this one Calories Burned Biking / Cycling Calculator
403 from this one Bicycling Calorie Calculator

That doesn't take into account the 5% incline for half of it or the fact you're riding on gravel but my sense is even these types of estimates are over-estimates. I would guess between 300 and 400 for your ride yesterday. I'm not sure you can get anymore accurate than that. Maybe with a heart rate monitor.

20 laps today, intentionally less than I could have done to prepare for tomorrow. I do remember just a few weeks ago I would not have thought I could do even the 20.

Thanks for the calculations Rob, I take your point, the cronometer calculator probably over estimates the biking calories. I will probably just stop using it and trying to figure calories burned for now. I will track what I know, the number of laps or minutes, that is what I can control.

I'm glad you rode less than what you could have done in preparation for your ride tomorrow. You have been doing so well, Rob so far, without tracking precisely. It's very time-consuming. Maybe if you stop losing you could track for a while.
