Alligatorob's Diary

Hm... This is not me speaking as a bike expert, just me as a physical therapist on the other side of the world who hasn´t seen you ride so is throwing out generalities. If sitting upright with less pressure on your hands doesn´t solve the problem, it seems more likely the problem´s in your shoulder area than directly in your hands. If you sit with your shoulders shoved forward or pulled up toward your shoulders that could cause problems. If your legs have trouble delivering the strength you need you may pull on the handlebars a lot to "help" them and tense up because of that.

I think you're doing great Rob. I'm not sure it's a good you don't feel hungry. I get concerned about your calorie totals sometimes and I'm not sure you're getting enough protein or veges either. I think those are the two biggest bangs for your small calorie bucks. Just maybe sneak in a little bit more of these things very slowly as you continue the exercise. Feeling tired during exercise like you're out of breath and heart is working hard tired or sleep tired or sickness/body fatigue tired? If it's the first one, that's what you want and feeling tired is the way to go in that case. Bottom line is you know what's best for you so I'll trust you on that and keep cheering you on! Good for you on the 21 laps today and the climb/elevation is so great for your heart.

It was a good day, we went out to a kind of bingo for charity thing this evening, that threw my eating off a little, but it worked out in the end.

LaMa, I know you can't diagnose me, but I do appreciate your suggestions, it gives me some ideas to work with. I would not have thought about the shoulder thing. I do occasionally need to pull up on the handlebars when I am on the steepest parts, or when I hit a deeper gravel spot. Not all the time, but occasionally. Thanks!

Rob, I breath hard, but probably not to the point of feeling completely out of breath, and yes I know my heart is working harder. There is no real lasting effect after riding except that my legs feel a bit tighther, no fatigue or anything. In fact I usually feel more energetic once the inital effects wear off. I don't think I am at risk of overdoing it. Maybe the opposite, sometimes I feel like I am being too slow getting into the exercises, but its working so I will try to be happy with it. You are right about the veggies, I need to eat a few more, I would like to eat a bowl of broccoli at least once a day.

Uzzah from Judah died in 1010 BC as a result of being smitten by God. It seems Uzzah dared touch the Ark of the Covenant. He was carrying it to Jerusalem for King David and when his oxen stumbled he reached up to keep the Ark from falling, and was killed immediately. Seems to me to be pretty harsh punishment given the situation. Maybe there is more to the story. We all know from the Indiana Jones movie the Nazis were smitten when they tried to open the Ark, but it seems to me that was different. Have to say if I had the chance it would be hard not to open the Ark and look inside.

I don´t think you´re going too slow with your exercise. Sounds like you´re listening to you body and making sound progress. I found the story of Uzzah unfair even when I first read it as a kid. It´s like the king who fell into the water and drowned because none of the people standing by dared to break the taboo on touching him to pull him out.

I don't know the story of the king in the water, LaMa - where is that from?

Uzzah's death is certainly unfair as the story is told - and David the king thought so too, I'm happy to say. The story says he stopped the transporting of the ark right there, for a while at least - a frw months? I'm not sure.

Rob well done on the 21 laps .
clonmacnoise is pronounced

Clon Mac noise .
We have some weird pronunciation. dunloaighaire is pronounced Dun leery . Lol

I can´t remember the story exactly and am too lazy to check but I thought David was scared, not angry.
Can´t remember where I read the original drowning king story but I know Pratchett used a variation on it in Fifth Elephant. Can´t 100% guarantee I did read it before but I think so?

LaMa, its a relatively modern story and a true one, Queen Sunanda Kumariratana of Thailand drowned in 1880 when touching a Queen was a capital offense in Thailand. So even though surround by people she went under (Sunanda Kumariratana - Wikipedia). It could of coarse also be an older story about a king.

It was a good day, I was tempted not to, but in the end ate well. I did not do my bike ride, it was cold (near freezing) rainy, and windy. Not a bike day. Tomorrow is supposed to be cold but no rain so I should be able to get out. Rob, at your suggestion I have added some veggies to my diet, I know that is best, but sometimes I just eat the easy thing and that is not always the right thing.

Thanks Petal, Clon Mac noise, just like it sounds. I can appreciate your illogical pronunciation of dunloaighaire, we have a lot of place names like that here too, for example a river I used to fish in in Wyoming is the Popo Agie, pronounced po po ja. Unfortunately English does not follow phonetic spelling rules very well. We also have a lot of non-English place names, some of which are pronounced as in the original language but most are anglicized, there is no consistency. We have a number of towns called Dubois, some use the French pronunciation, some don't. Most of the residents of Valdosta don't even know the name comes from Val d Aosta, Italy. I didn't until driving through the Val d Aosta, not that it looks anything like Georgia.

LaMa, thanks for your take on my pace of exercise. You are right so far I have been listening to my body, there are just times I get anxious to do more than maybe I should. So far I have not followed those urges.

Flyer, yet another equally trivial meaning of 1010, thanks.

Bishop Stanislaus of Szczepanów (Krakow) died in 1079. He was murdered by King Boleslaw II for somewhat unclear reasons. One was that he criticized the King for cruel treatment of his soldiers' unfaithful wives. When King Boleslaw sent his soldiers to kill the Bishop they refused and so the King killed him by his own hand while the Bishop was celebrating mass. This caused such a uproar that the King was dethroned. For some reason Boleslaw as known as Bolesław II the Generous, obviously not a name given him by the Bishop or the wayward soldiers' wives.

:D Very true :D It can be awfully confusing for non-native speakers. How would you pronounce...

GHOTI ?

According to my English teacher it´s "fish". "GH" as in enough, "O" as in women, and "TI" as in mention. Not sure I fully agree with the last part but you get the picture.

Well I would say Goti , drop the h . But I've seen all the young people text enuf rather than enough!!

Rob well done on your good day.

And I pedal my bike Petal, though I pronounce them the same way.

Native speakers as well, we have just had a few more years to get used to it.

I have a friend who is mostly deaf, but can lip read and speak quite well. He really struggles with this, having learned a lot of words by reading them rather than hearing them first as the rest of us do.

Well enuf of this, hope to have ghoti for dinner.

22 laps, another new high, but only by 1. It felt good.

It was cold, about freezing, overcast and unusually damp for Utah. I wore a coat for the first time, it kept me warm but caught on my seat when I stopped, I almost feel. Guess I need a shorter coat, and to think about where my clothing is hanging. As I remember when I rode in the cold in my 20s I wore a down vest, maybe a need a warm vest for this.

Or long enough to sit on? My cold-weather-biking problem used to be that my thighs would get SO COLD and burn like fire all the way to school.

Hi Rob - think I must have missed that you live in Utah! My husband spent a chunk of his childhood there before moving to Flagstaff and then Spokane. When he was in Utah he was bullied for being the only non-Morman at his school!

It was a good day, I ate well and feel good.

In 1068 an earthquake with a magnitude of something greater than 7 destroyed the ancient city of Ayla and shock the ground from what is modern Syria to Saudi Arabia. An estimated 20,000 people died. Ayla was rebuilt and is Aqaba today, Jordan's only seaport.

:) Does that mean your dog is gaining what you lose?
