Alligatorob's Diary

I just noticed that about 40% of my calories today were from peaches. I hope that's not bad. They seem to sit well with me, I feel good.

:D If it feels good and doesn´t make you crave-y I think you´re fine.
Shell: do be careful if you start eating eggplant not at home. It can soak up a TON of oil if you let it and in restaurants it usually does.

We call it aubergine and it's great in a vegetarian lasagne to bulk it up. Occasionally I'll slice in 2 and bake in oven as Rob says with tomato sauce and cheeses . I have never soaked it though so that sounds like a good idea.

We don´t soak it: we salt it, let it sit for a while until it starts sweating a lot, rinse it off at pat it dry. The modern varieties don´t necessarily need it, I think; they´re much less bitter than they used to be.

That may be true, particularly for store bought. However I know the ones we are currently growing need the soaking. We rushed one a couple of weeks ago cutting the soak short, it was bitter. LaMa is right, you can get them to soak up a lot of oil, that's probably the secret to really good restaurant eggplant parmesan. Fortunately I like eggplant with nothing but tomato sauce and a little cheese.

i had a peach binge a few weeks ago.... 99 cents/ lb on 4-5 types! now that they're back to $1.99 i wish i had gotten more. fortunately this week pears were the ticket.

It was a good day, spent the evening juicing peaches, we picked about 2 bushel last evening and got a little over 4 1/2 gallons of juice. These peaches were different, over ripe and almost turning to mush in the buckets. They made more juice and better juice than the first batch, sweeter and more peach flavored. I guess we learned a peach juicing lesson, the over riper the better! I think we are getting better at this.

We have several varieties of peach and most are still not ripe. The early peaches make up about 1/3 of the trees, so we still have lots to go. It amazes me how many the farmer leaves unpicked, all that we get are the leftovers. The ones we processed today were too ripe for him, they would never have made it to market.

Our dogs discovered they liked the peach halves and slices and kept stealing from our buckets as we worked, so all at our house had their fill of peaches today. Probably pick and juice more tomorrow. At this rate by the end of the season our freezer will be full of peach juice.

In 1210, or there abouts, Gottfried von Strassburg wrote his epic poem Tristan, an adaptation of the older legend of Tristan and Iseuit. There have been numerous retellings of the tail, most notably Wagner's opera Tristan and Isolde. Tristan was a great knight who had an affair with his uncle King Mark's wife, or bride to be (depending on the telling) Iseult (Isolde in Wagner's opera). The story bears a remarkable resemblance to the story of Lancelot, Guinevere, and King Arthur.

Peaches sound delicious Rob . The farmer is very kind to let you have so much but I suppose it helps him out too.

Probably not as remarkable as all that, given the amount of cultural exchange going on at the time. Very ripe fruit definitely gives better juice but it also has more of a tendency to start fermenting. I guess that´s not a problem if you freeze it though. I never knew you could freeze juice so I learned something new.

Hey Rob! Belated congrats on 44 down! So excited for you and glad you are feeling so good. Wow, it’s really happening now, you must be so pleased!

I don’t think there is a lethal dose of peaches! I also think historically from our hunter gatherer dna, our bodies are meant to gorge when we can and fast when we can’t. I love that your dogs were into the peaches too! I know mine would have been so cute thinking they were getting away with something really special.

Rob how do you juice peaches? Do you have some type of juicer? When my peaches or any fruit is to ripe for me, I end up throwing it away, which I know is also throwing away money. I never thought about juicing it.

This sounds like bliss! Like the Garden of Eden, with peach-juice splashing everywhere, and even the dogs laughing and getting sticky with the juice!
(And goodness knows what Tristan and Iseult are doing, what with peach-juice and kisses all day long!)

Today was a good day, not quite as peachy as yesterday, but good. Didn't get around to another harvest and juicing, maybe tomorrow.

The earliest evidence of the settlement of Jericho dates to about 11,200 years ago, probably predating development of agriculture.

:D It may be worth it to go back and compare this day with how you were eating at the beginning. It amused me greatly!

A great day of food and it's lovely your wife is on board and helping

Btw I watched sons of perdition on Amazon prime . It was a real eye opener.I feel very sorry for those kids and wives.
