Allergic to outdoor exercise

I am new to this board and not sure if this is the best place to post but thought I would give it a try...

Started an exercise routine about a year ago and haven't stuck with it completely but that is besides the point. When I started last year I was jogging around my area and one day I started to have an "allergic" reaction. Hives, swelling, etc. This has happened several times since the initial reaction. I am taking anti-histamines but am not 100% positive it is under control enough to go back outside and exercise.

Has anyone else experience this and if so what have you done about it? I exercise indoors (step aerobics) but it starts to get boring after a while and would be nice to not be restricted to always going to the gym to exercise.

Thanks for any advice...

well you need to go to a Doctor and have a allergy test done to see what you are exactly allergic to. My wife is "deathly" allergic to a cerrtain type of grass, it only grows in one place in the world....at the park at the end of her street where she grew up...go figure. Anyway, she had extensive procedures as a child to have this figured out. But of course she is fine. Allergies are unique they can come and go with our bodies through the years since our bodies are constantly changing and altering internal reactions. Anyway, get check out, and they may give you a steroid shot. I am allergic to certain soaps and detergants. it's all relative.

Thanks MellowGAMan --

I saw the doc and had allergy tests that show I have moderate allergies to several pollens but then the docs didn't do much more than to say, well if it happens again come in and we will do more testing. But take this anti-histamine before you exercise and we will see how that goes. They also stated my thyroid could cause these kinds of reactions if it is out of balance.

Another doc disagreed with this and said she thinks it is a combination of foods I eat and pollen allergies...

I probably should just get over it and try exercising outside while I am on my antihistamines...and get back to a different doc for another opinion...

Thanks again for taking the time to reply...

Spinning class is a ball, hard core, intense, and sometime quite the riot. And, you could always plan to run outside once a week just to keep the antihistameanies in your diet for the ENERGY!!! yeah baby!! and focus on corestrengthening in the .................. hahahahahahaa

may I ask what was swelling? and hives everywhere?

Could be the detergant in your clothes, when you start sweating, etc. I ahd that issue.

But get a script for allergy medicine, Zyrtec, Flonase, etc. I have horrible pollen allergies as long as I take my pill a day I am good.

Try Claritin over the counter for now, take it for a week everyday before you try it.

Best of luck

Swelling of my right eye (almost shut) and my left eye about 1/2 shut.

Hives from head to toe, hives will start in the palms of my hands and mouth and then spread from head to toe.

I do take zyrtec every day as well...I am thinking I need some eye drops since I really feel the pollen/ allergies in my eyes (eye lids swell)...

The allergist said she would test for laundry detergent, etc...so I might ask for those tests...

thanks again!

where are you located? State country? I grew up in NJ and had horrible, and I mean horrible Allergies to Ragweed, which is in the fall, I could count on them kicking in around August 20th every year. But as a kid they did not have the great meds they do now. But this is Spring, early summer, you are talking Pine Pollen and grass pollen, do you live near pine trees? Oak? I am starting to get Pine allergies here in Georgia now...switching from fall allergies to Spring.

OK, you might need a steroid shot if they are that bad. Ask the Doc. I would also take a combination of Zyrtec, and Floanase, PLUS eye drops, do you wear contacts or glasses? if so ask your Opt for a script they will write a eye drop solution that will work better, mine writes one for me.

Well take the zyrtec, maybe some Naphcon A eye drops they work pretty good, take a few minutes before running, may sting a bit. But keep a bottle on Benedryl handy in case you get the hives again, usually you only get they a couple of times.

But my friend welcome to the wonderful world of allergies. If you can work out in a indoor environment until you get your meds straight with the DR.

I am just south of NJ in Virginia...I guess I'll have to take this stuff seriously and start doing what I need to do so I can finally enjoy the outside again!!

Thanks again for everything!
