Allan's Weight Loss Journey

So jealous you're learning to fly. It's definitely on my bucket list. :]

I could never multi-task on the treadmill. Don't know why. If I try to read, I get way too focused on the book. Tv worked ok, but our treadmill was loud so it was really hard to hear the tv over the noise it made.

We are having lentil and potato curry with brown basmati rice for dinner, so as long as I keep the portion small, I should be okay.

Mmm, that sounds good. I haven't had a good curry in a while. But, on the bright side, I also haven't had the sure-to-follow fire poops in a while either.

Quercus, I will have to check out WNYC Radio Lab. Yikes, 3mm in Puget Sound doesn't seem like enough rubber to me! I do use a hood when I'm tempted to go out there this time of year. It is not comfortable; however a hood does stave off bony growths in surfers' ears from cold exposure by keeping the ears warm. I have a an early stage growth in my left ear from the north winds in winter from my early teens and 20's when I didn't let the cold stop me and didn't wear hoods unless it was absolutely necessary. But anyway TMI ... LOL.

Icy, It's funny because I read the second book after seeing the first movie, so the respective characters in the book look like Lenny Kravitz or Jennfier Lawrence, etc, which isn't such a bad thing ;-)

Cory, yeah our bike is on the loud side, so I end up having to turn the volume way up. I guess that's why I like the surf videos, no need to really hear any dialog, just surfing, dude ;)

Chef, awe the fire poops! ... haha! I think we eat curry so much now that I have become immune to the curry-induced ones, unless I change it up and eat Taco Bell. Taco Bell still gets me.

Thanks, Mystic!

I have been pretty mediocre this week diet wise, and downright weak fitness wise. Only two days of 20 minutes on the bike and one 30 min walk today. I'm hoping to see 166-point-something tomorrow though - we shall see. Oh, and my flight to San Diego (for my aunt's funeral) was delayed until tomorrow, so I just took an easy day away from my super stressful work environment by keeping my day off today and went to lunch with mrs. greensurf. It was a nice get-away for me, and guess what Chef, more curry! lol, we went to our favorite Indian place, but my wife got pissed though when they wouldn't let us sit at the table she wanted. They are a little bit like the "Curry Nazi's" at this place, but it is by far the best Indian cuisine in town, so over the last 11 years we have tolerated the stringent seating rules and grumpy demeanor of the staff, but I think today was the last straw for mrs greensurf and this restaurant. She has vowed to only order takeout from them now. She came home and drafted a complaint e-mail, but I'm not sure she will actually send it.

Okay. I bottomed out on 167, then went on my trip. You know how those go! New restaurants and lots of food. It was a funeral too, with a couple different events, so there was even more eating and drinking. We did do a lot of walking though. Overall I came home with about 1.5 lb added as of yesterday (seems to take a couple days for the weight to show up) @ 168.5 . So I'm back now trying to reign in my eating and getting back on the fitness routine. I cycled both Saturday and Sunday. Now I need to focus on hitting that 1400 calorie mark the rest of the week.

Although it was a sad reason to be there, it was great to see relatives I had not seen in years, and San Diego was awesome. I missed it so much. I lived there until I was 12 and have been on the East Coast ever since. But it is still my true hometown.

I finished Catching Fire, and was disappointed to find out that the movie will not be released on DVD until March! Dang.

Crud, I never knew about the ear growths! I bought the wetsuit without the hood in February as it was a big off season sale. I was having a hard time wading in despite the suit. I had wet the suit and splashed myself and the wind was blowing so I thought I'd be better off in the water. I dove in and when my head went under it "pulsed" violently and I was very close to blacking out. I stood up, waded out, and didn't try again until I had the hood.

The beauty of swimming in the Sound is that you almost always have the whole place to yourself even in summer. Out on the coast I could body surf a little and the sea lions and harbor seals were always very curious. I saw a lot of cool stuff snorkeling in kelp forests on the Sound. I watched a couple of river otters eat clams and urchins and then wash up and take a nap floating in the kelp. I watched two harbor seals take turns corralling a school of herring and the other would swim through the dense ball and eat all he could before rounding them up for the other one. They did this until the school was too small to mess with and they were visibly fatter than when they started. I got super cold on that one as I got too intrigued to pay much attention until my teeth were chattering too hard to keep a seal on my snorkel. I didn't think I'd ever feel warm again after that. I was always close to heated shelter of some kind and I just tried to pay close attention to how cold I got.

I really miss it. None of the waters here have enough visibility to make it worthwhile.

Sorry to here about the funeral, but it's good that you got to visit family. Not a bad rebound in weight either.

Love that! -- it's a whole other wilderness out there in the water. Sometimes, even if the waves are just bleh, seeing dolphins and osprey while sitting on my board waiting for the waves is enough to make a cold session worth while. On a few occasions I've seen pods with little infant pups, probably only about 3 ft long. Not nearly, as much variety above the water as below the surface...

Weight-wise, seems like for the entire month of Feb, I wavered between 168 and 168.5. It was tough getting back into good eating habits after the trip to SD. Plus, my 60-hr weeks weren't helping things on the stress and and exercise front. I've recently reigned it back in though. On Sunday, I was down to 166. I did have a bit of a double-cheat day though since then -- I went on a bit of a pizza binge. I had three personal pizza's from the grocery store two days in a row (yes, two in one day -- yikes).

Okay, so I just got back from a little trial. After reading Kevbag's post about forefoot strike running, I gave it a shot. During K and my daily walk with our beagle Penny, I did some some short 30-second interval jogs, concentrating on impacting with my forefoot instead of my heels. So much better on the knees, so far. I will report back tomorrow if I have any pains.

I used to run on my forefoot about a decade ago, but trained myself out of it to take advantage of all the heel cushioning in shoes. But the forefoot running seems to be less stressful on the knees, so I am going back to it, and hopefully, this approach will enable me to start running regularly again.
