alcohol and weight training

how does alcohol affect weight training?
i work out to get stronger (3-6 reps) and i do cardio too if it matters.
i know its not good for you, but i hear alot of different stuff about it, some say you loose 1-2 weeks of workout if you get drunk. is that true?

It slows your metabolism. It requires your body to spend your night of rest detoxifying instead of building muscle and repairing your body. It dehydrates you. It's loaded with worthless calories.

I don't know about the 1-2 week thing, but it certainly sets you back.

i saw something about it on the internet just now. it said that you shouldnt drink from 48 hours before a workout and if you want to drink after a workout you have to drink lots of water first, then take the alcohol with a meal.

I think like ANYTHING, you just have to do it in moderation. I drink something about 5 nights a week. Not much when I do... A couple glasses of wine or a shot of vodka in my fresca, but it doesn't effect my workouts negatively. If it does, then the benefits of drinking (for me) far outweigh a small percentage increase in performance. With three children, a glass of wine is all that stands between them being little monsters or cute, rambunctious little rascals.

Hear ya there JP oh boy do I.. being a single parent do I ever second that motion lol
i like it better when I think my kids are cute little munckins rather than evil little migets pushing my buttons.. lol..sad but true, now where did that glass of wine go???

I totally agree with JP and Jenn, and the frequency with which I consume alcohol rivals JP's.At then end of the day, a couple shot's of Captain or a few Coronas is my way of winding down and I do not think it has much of an adverse affect upon my training or recovery.

Yesterday morning I completed a 3-mile hike/climb/run up and down a mountain (rated as extremely difficult) in 56 minutes. The average time for this trail is around 95-100 minutes, and the night before I got well into my cups.

I'm not endorsing drinking by any measure, but I do not think that frequent moderate indulgence is as bad as most people make it out to be.

but what if you get drunk? not like, lying down puking drunk, cuz i dont do that.
but you know, the stage before that. because when i wake up after i have been drinking (without having worked out the day i was drinking) my muscles always hurt

I don't drink as frequently as others here (2-3 times a week) but when I do I usually get pretty drunk. Also I only drink on friday and saturday nights (actually sometimes thursdays but we'll ignore that) which are also rest days for me.

It might well adversly effect my training but I'm still seeing gains week in week out, so it can't be that bad.

Sure I might see a difference (maybe even a big difference) if I stopped drinking but I enjoy it far to much to do that.

I'd be more concerned with my mental health if I stopped doing something I enjoy just to see sligthly bigger gains.

yeah im not gonna stop drinking:p i hardly ever do it anymore anyways.. just sometimes friday night a get a little drunk with some friends. i just heard u LOSt 1-2 weeks of workout and though it sounded like ALOT :S

There is no escaping the fact that alcohol has absolutely no place in a fitness regime. People are always looking for ways round it but there is none. It is a poor thing to do.

i don't get drunk, but i am also past that stage of life, there is nothing wrong with a glass of wine at the end of the day.

i know that, but i just want to know HOW bad it is..

Yeh sorry, just getting on my high horse. In terms of empty calories it is an awful way to consume, but certainly it is better to drink good quality wines and spirits than anything else.

yeah offcource, im not too worry about calories though.. as i never get fat whatever i do :S but i heard alcohol breaks down muscle mass or something like that

It all depends how serious you are about training. If you are training for fun, and general fitness, then a few drinks is no big deal. If you want to be an athlete, or have an exceptional body, then the less booze the better.

Alcohol does not break down muscle mass, but it does inhibit protein synthesis, so that your muscles will have a very difficult time growing. It promotes the storage of abdominal fat (beer belly). It interferes with deep sleep cycles for up to 48 hours, in some cases preventing the release of growth hormone. It toxifies and over works your liver and kidneys, which play an important role in hormonal balance, specifically in a fitness perspective, your testosterone / estrogen ratio.

I just had a little experience with this last night. New years eve I got pretty much  "wasted". I was drinking untill almost 4am and did not start feeling totally sober untill late sunday. But anyway, I went into the gym monday and I noticed an obvious difference in my strength and energy level. I just felt like ****. So It definetly affects me for the worse. I dont drink on a daily basis or even weekly. As a matter of fact, I think it had been over a month since I had anything with alcohol in it. Maybe that is why I felt so bad.

just out of curiousity,

what do ya'll think of the drink 12oz of beer to lower your chance of canaryheart disease?

but in women it will raise the chance of breast cancer by 10-15% even just one glass of wine.

Just been reading.

lol i am going out on a limb and say smoking is not the smartest thing to do!

hell i just hang out with other people who smokes and i can feel that i breath harder and feel down.
