Advice Please!!!

I'm trying to drop about 25lbs quick. I am a motivated guy that hasn't worked out in about 8 years because I've had a lot on my plate since leaving college. As a result, I've accrued a beer belly, though most of my body hasn't gained much weight.

I'm trying to cut the bullshit, and lose weight quick while toning, with the plan to switch to moderate cardio and focus on weight lifting after my gut is gone.

I'm currently 6'2" and 206lbs. I've been dropping between 1600 and 2000 Calories a work out, with two to 2.5 hours workouts on the elliptical.

I'm also noticing that my chest and lower stomach are tonight through this, and my pants are already sliding down even though its only been a little less then three weeks. I try to work out every day, or at least every other day.

At first, when I finished I could barely walk, but now after working out I feel more alive... and experience no side effects. Even the immediate hunger I used to feel has diminished.

Is there something wrong with this strategy?!?! If I drop the weight, and then start doing intense weight lifting... when it comes back will it be in the right places or will it still go to just my gut? It's always been annoying, but my body type builds around the stomach and doesn't really spread.

Advice appreciated.

Hi, I'm no pro so I don't know, but you've got me riddled with questions.

If that's your body type, then that's your body type. I don't see why it should change its mind and start stacking the weight anywhere else? If the first place it goes to is the stomach, then that's the last place it'll leave, is what I've learned on here (unless I've misunderstood that concept).

Also, how did you know you've been burning 2000 calories a workout? That sounds a bit weird to me. Maybe it is possible in two hours, I wouldn't know. Why aren't you depending on a deficit instead though, with a balanced diet? You can still lose weight quickly if you ate properly, without over-exercising to death. It sounds like you're exhausting yourself with workout, with no mention of how you eat. (from my personal experience, I just pay attention to my eating habits- calories in vs calories out, and the weight is flying off)
???

Anyway, I hope the mods will clarify for both of us.

I don't have much weight other places for it to leave, lol. I have a tall, lean build with a gut I'm trying to lose. Don't really know where else the weight would come off of.

As far as the intense workout, I feel pretty groovy after the work outs now. I remember before when I worked out a lot something similar happened and as soon as I started I was good at the cardio stuff, although the weight portion I made slow progress on.

i'm averaging about 800 Calories an hour on the Elliptical, and to the best of my research the brand I use is supposed to be pretty accurate. I'll leave a margin of error there, but a 2.5 hour work out general shows a loss of 2000 calories. I use the interval workout, or whatever you call it, the one that has varying intensity levels because I figure it'll help me build my stomach and stuff too.

As far as eating habits, I'm trying not to starve myself, but have focused on eating better. I use 2% milk instead of whole now, and trying to go down lower then that slowly. I've cut way down on soda... I used to drink it all day, now I drink it a few times a week. I try to do a slim fast for two meals, and as an after workout replenisher, and allow myself to eat whatever I want as much as I want after I work out, as long as its healthy.

I notice that eating a potato before workout helps a lot for some reason.

Oh yeah definitely eat, no need to starve yourself at all. Slim fast is meh! I have two containers collecting dust on the shelf, I bought them a long time ago, before I began tracking my food online, or checking this gem of a forum. Eat real meals, lean protein, grains, veggies and fruits..etc. Your body needs macro-nutrients at least. I don't think slim fast does it. (especially given the fact that you exercise hard)

The problem is, even if you're lean but with a bit of fat on the tummy -at one point i was there- you still need that deficit all the way. No amount of crunches, for instance will target specific areas. I have your exact problem. So I think technically you can build your stomach muscle under the fat, but not dissolve the fat so to speak, with sports alone.

Interval, you mean HIIT? That's awesome, but I still wouldn't depend on a machine counting my calories for me and setting me off by a few hundred. I'd rather use a calorie calculator, find out according to my "level of activity" (weight/height..etc) how much I need to consume, not the other way around. It's a little bit of weight, but the general method still applies in my opinion.

Again, I hope the pros here give you more advice. Good luck with it, be patient, you can do it for sure.:D

Ummm, the rate of success for fast weight loss and maintenance is next to zero. I'm not saying it's impossible. But fast weight loss is always accompanied by short term perspectives with no focus on life after weight loss. And when that's the case, almost invariably the weight is regained.

If how you're eating right now is not a way of eating you can see yourself doing for the remainder of your life, your chances of maintaining whatever losses this method provides is very slim.

And if you have friends that are super awesome at losing weight quickly and maintaining it forever, why are you asking us?

Ask them.

And while you're at it... tell them to get on Opera and write a book.

A reasonable rate of weight loss in my opinion is 1% of body weight per week if the results are to be maintained.
