advice needed - building size cutting fat

i've been trying to bulk up and put on some size. eating lots of protein and probably too much peanut butter. i have gotten bigger but my thighs are much bigger and i now have love handles...

any advice on continuing getting the size but cutting the fat? whey? eliptical/stair-stepper?

thank you!

anything?

anything? any knowledge regarding this...

can't do it all at once you just gotta know your gonna gain some fat gotta suck it up...thats where most dudes get their fat right away it is common amongst may people. All you can do is try to keep eating healthy and once you are done with that bulk and begin cutting you will evenutally lose that fat. It just takes time.

....If it was that easy everybody would what your asking than everybody would do it.

If you want you can do cardio 2 times a week but you don't want to do it that much where its burnign to many calories while your on a bulk

fat loss and size

I have to agree with Danny; It is tough to cut fat and gain lean muscle at the same time. Basically the only people that can do this are heavy people new to weight training.

The 2 do not mix because you need to take in extra calories to add mass and to lose fat you need to have a deficit of calories.

You have to decide what is more important to you at this time and follow a diet that supports your goals.

Good luck

Fuel yourself smart and you will gain lean muscle.

you don't necessarily have to gain fat if you want to add muscle.
It is hard to give a good answer because you haven't provided us with much details, but my first guess is that your diet is out of balance.
You say you are eating a sh!tload of protein and heaps of peanut butter.
Not really a diet for champs mate.
My guess is that your main energy source for your workout is..glycogen
which comes from....carbohydrates..... and not peanut butter,,which is high in fat. protein is not a ideal fuel source either.
Agreed you will need more protein once you start working out but it is easy to go overboard.
You will need about 1.5-1.7 g/kg protein in early training stages and about 1.0-1.2 when you get to a steady state. Have a look at how much you are eating now.you are probably eating to much.
and all that extra protein will go straight to your self proclaimed love handles.

Try eating more low GI foods and keep your daily intake vs expenditure in balance.

you cannot bulk and cut at the same time. the newbie phenemenon is such an unexplanable one that it cant be used as part of a routine, as by the time someone becomes aware of it they are usually well past it.

adding size = more kcalories, reducing size = less kcalories.

BINGO

List your diet and workout program and we can help you a little bit more

i'm sorry it has taken so long for a reply. i had surgery this summer and was on a liquid diet from a wired mouth and definately lost weight with less calories ha.

but i'm back on track. i'm 6'3" and weight 210 now.

my diet consists of omlettes, cereal...sometimes sugary, sometimes healthy but usually bigger bowls, skinless chicken grilled on the george foreman, yogurt. i don't drink or smoke. and i'm in college, so it's hard to find a good diet that is cheap but does the job!

my workout combos: shoulders and tri's, back and bi's, and chest. i usually get on the elipitical for about 30 min each time im in the gym, too. about 4 times a week.

i appreciate the help!

I'm going to throw out a rough theory i was thinking of regarding gaining muscle while losing fat

Lets say your in a bulking phase, after 2 weeks you calculate how much muscle you gain and how much fat you've gained. Is it theoretically possible to go on a deficit diet and do HITT cardio to burn as much fat as possible while keeping the muscle loss to a extreme minimum, and when you burn most the fat, you can continue bulking and keep repeating the process to the point where:

1. Gain muscle gain fat
2. HITT deficit diet lose some fat, keep most of the muscle you gained
3. Bulk gain more muscle and some more fat
4. repeat

Opinions on how this could work if im just completely wrong?

The manipulation of calories isnt new really. There are many different approaches (like in my CycleBack, CycleForward, and CycleFlipBack approach), and the zig zag diet (where one stays in surplus for a number of days, and then a deficit for a small period---and some have seen good results). However, staying in a deficit diet will not gain muscle (albeit beginner gains exception), because of the basic laws of energy balance and bodily adaption. But basically, zigging and zagging the diet has produced good results for some people.

So would you recommend for someone looking to go on the zig-zag diet to eat a surplus of calories on full body workout days, ( 4 days a week ) and then eat a deficit calorie diet the rest of the week + HITT?

Im not a trainer. But I do believe (and someone can correct me if I am wrong), that it is generally accepted to do one or the other: Cut or Bulk. As a general guidline, of course, one wants to minimize fat gain while trying to gain as much muscle as possible.

When I was dieting to lose my fat and training heavy and doing cardio, I wasnt concerned about size, necessarily. I was more concerned with losing body fat and maintaining muscle (though I grew alot in the first couple of months (noob gains). After I lost the fat weight, I wanted to put on a few pounds while staving off fat gain, and my approaches were modified to me. I just wanted to be muscular and torso defined, and knew I wasnt going to be all that big at the same time. Im 46, I have no carry over from my youth (Meaning prior training gains in youth, never trained before), and new my muscle growth was going to lack because of my age. I never did HITT.

The aforementioned is just stated for what its worth.

I want to be careful answering this question, and would like more eyes to see it, before I provide additional input, so you can get one with a bit more experience than I. You will get some I am sure. Im just being cautious, so you get the right info and not mislead.

One could do a zig zag in the way you mentioned, but I would be wise in the caloric manipulations in conjunction with training. A deficit/surplus dieiting is not in my opinion a optimum enviroment for muscle growth (if this is an issue with you), but growth can occur, IF the deficit doesnt offset the surplus side too much, and things considered equal in weight stimulation in the gym.

I hope this made sense. Zig zag has worked for some. It just depends on ones goal.

Hi,

Bulking up and cutting fat is practically impossible. If you try to do these two things at the same time you actually are going in two opposite directions.

"If you want to put on the most muscle possible, you would engage in what's called a 'bulking' diet. That is where you eat 10-15% over your maintenance level calories. The rate of muscle growth can be quite rapid at this level of caloric intake, but the rate of fat gain can often be as high as the rate of muscle gain (a 1:1 ratio).

The goal on a cutting diet is to eat 10-20% below your maintenance calories in order to burn as much fat as possible without sacrificing muscle. On any cutting diet, some muscle loss is almost inevitable, but your goal is to maintain as much lean body mass as possible."

i'm kind of lost then.

yes...i want to get bigger....and yes, i want to get more cut.

but most of all, i want to be healthy and lean. not just a truck.

athletes can't be lifting all the time and just getting 30 minutes of cardio in. extensive cardio is in there job everyday! but goes like dwight howard, brady quinn and terrell owens still are huge and cut.

i guess my question is how do they go about that?
