Advice/help appreciated!

Hi,

I have just joined this forum in hope of advice on my weight and the problems I'm experiencing in losing it!

My story is a little long... so apologies in advance!

I am 28, 5.4 1/2 and currently weight approx 140lb/10 stone. This does not sound too much but I have a very small frame. I have had two pregnancies blighted by Hyperemesis Gravidaram (EXTREME morning sickness). Both pregnancies resulted in an (approximate) 2 stone weight loss, numerous drips, anti sickness drugs and have resulted in occasional, very extreme IBS symptoms (this seems irrelevant but bear with me!). Prior to falling pregnant, I weighed 8 stone 10lb, a weight which I got back to by the time the baby had been born (i.e. I gained the two stone lost during the pregnancy, before I gave birth). After, I lost more weight and stabilised at about 8st 7lb. THEN I HIT 25! By the time I conceived again, I weighed 10 stone, far too much for my frame. I then lost another two again during the pregnancy but re-gained it before the birth.

Since the birth of my second baby, I have struggled hugely to shift any weight whatsoever and the distribution of my weight has changed hugely. I am a typical hour glass but for the first time in my life am carrying a lot of weight on my stomach and waist. The tops of my thighs and arms are bigger than ever and I have a veil of cellulitis fat over my entire body. At 28 I have the body I would expect to have in twenty years time!

I have tried various weight programmes. Whilst I was still breast feeding, I was attending the gym doing high impact cardio classes 3 times a week, I've tried calorie control, gentle exercise, cutting out carbs etc. but have not seen any difference on the scales or on my measurements. In fact, since the birth of my second, I seem to be steadily gaining ... The baby is now 11 months old and I am sticking to a 1200 calorie per day diet, which I find pretty easy (turns out I don't eat that much to begin with!) but after two weeks I have seen no difference on the scales or in my measurements. I walk briskly everywhere, which is my only exercise at the moment.

I feel as though the HG has wrecked my body and my metabolism and that no matter what I do, it adjusts accordingly and runs on what I give it. Is there ANYTHING I can do to reset my metabolism or get things going again? I have had all thyroid etc functions tested recently and all are normal.

Sorry for such a long, boring post! Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

From what I know, Hyperemesis Gravidarum is related to high HCG levels in pregnancy which can cross react with thyroid hormone receptors. If simply put, it can put you in a hyperthyroid state during pregnancy. Thinking of it that way, it can explain your weight loss during pregnancy (?)

I'm not very sure, I'm a medical student and that's just based on what I learned in Obstetrics. Thyroid hormones can mess with your metab pretty much so you may want to ask your doc about that

Oh sorry to be unclear - HG is extreme sickness during pregnancy, so the weight loss is related to my inability to hold anything down. At my worst I hadn't held anything solid down for almost 3 weeks - hence the severe weight loss. My body rejects everything I eat, as I eat it. Very extreme cases have to be fed intraveneously. Thanks for your reply x

I guess there's nothing to lose asking your GP to get your thyroid functions checked. It's pretty common and a lot of people present with no symptoms other that obesity and failure to lose weight :)

Hey Sophie,

How much time do you give yourself to start seeing results? I think with this most recent attempt, you are currently at about 2 weeks? This isn't always enough time for results to be apparent. I realize that having patience is much easier said than done, but make sure you stick with something for at least a month before giving up.

I don't know if you've come across this forum yet, but it's for new moms. You might be able to find something here:

I'm sorry that I don't have a better answer for you... How do you cope with stress? Stress hormones can often hamper weight loss attempts.

Thank you both - I will most definitely have a look at the new Mum forum. I don't suffer from stress - I have a very pleasant life with my partner and my lovely children... I have had my thyroid functions checked recently and am not sure I can convince the Doctor to do it again! I will most definitely give my current diet a little while longer... Thanks again for your suggestions
