A Very Big Man's Introduction

Since I'm new here, I thought it only fair if I introduce myself before I start pestering anyone for help, support or praise.

I am 50, married, have college and school aged kids and have been a stay at home dad for several years now.

I am also morbidly obese, at 6'3 and weighing in on January 4th at 457 lbs. That's right 457. That's a record for me. I've been in the 440 range (until last August) for 2-3 years.
A large framed man, at 260 pounds most people have thought I looked good. Even at this ridiculous weight, I manage to carry it pretty well; I am mobile, can carry my one of my kids if needed (or all the groceries or furniture, for that matter). I am not diabetic, have only moderately high blood pressure, and at last measure my cholesterol was 200. I require no medications presently. Yes, I know that I have been very fortunate. I have had surgeries on both knees (tree fall and a slip on ice) and had my gall bladder removed 10 years ago. My excess weight and knee issues have only recently (last 2 years) become an issue with mobility or strength. Now, it can be a chore to take a flight of stairs or get off the floor for that matter.

I began a new eating regimen on January 4th. A friend had success with a Paleo lifestyle, so I read up and decided to give it a try. It's not a true Paleo diet, but I adopted what fits me best. I can eat all the veggies I want-- except starchy ones, a moderate amount of fruit, LOADS of protein, watch my salt, and have cut ALL gluten from my diet. The only dairy I do is greek yogurt, like Chobani, in moderation, and butter. It's been 17 days today, and quite honestly I fell 100% better. Knees are stronger, body aches have diminished, and I'm sleeping better. As a bonus, I have been cravings free and have found that I eat smaller, more frequent meals all day rather than 2-3 giant meals. I started using a stationary bike 4 days ago for short (10 minute) workouts up to three times per day. That will increase as I feel able to do more and more.

I track my eating, weigh ins (daily) and workouts on a single Excel sheet, and spend time everyday playing with the data and trying to manipulate it any ways I can that might help me out during this process. By the way, I am a right brained, engineer type, if you haven't guessed already.

Please feel free to wish me luck. I have an aggressive plan in place, but am flexible to the highs and lows of weight loss. This is not my first rodeo, but it is the first one I am doing right, with the right attitude, and a "no quit" mindset. I will succeed at this. Thanks for reading, if you made it this far.

Jan 4th Weight: 457
Today's Weight: 438
