A friend recently had the gastric bypass opperation. She was up on her feet and doing well. But it was discovered that her intestines werent properly repaired and were leaking gastric poisons into her body. She went into emergency surgury today. Her heart stopped. She was resecitated and put on a ventalator. She died at 7:30 tonight, five days before Christmas, with her husband and two baby girls waiting for her to come through. She was 100lbs overweight (technically), five feet, weighing 220lbs. I dont think she needed the surgury. It was her Christmas present to herself. Her four year old daughter doesnt undersatnd, cannot comprehend why her mama isnt comming home and why everyone is so sad.

that is a very sad story. i am so sorry to hear about you friend. my heart pains for her little ones and husband. that story makes me think about this weight lost thing, in terms of putting it into perspective. we must love ourselves as we are first and then go from there no matter how much you weigh. I must remember when i am at the gym no to over do it. my kids and husband need me.
Surgery is a serious matter. i have had 3 c-sections myself. when ever i get down to healthy weight i don't even know that i will have plastic surgery.
i am so sorry about your friend. i know that some good some where has to come out of this tradegy.

and it just really reinfoces my opinion on weight loss surgery... I hope the family recovers and finds some peace this holiday.
 
I worked at a hospital where we did those surgeries. Lots of people were fine. Some relapsed into thier old eating habits. Some didn't.

We had one patient who had asked to stay an extra few days before he flew home. The doctor said sure, no problem. The day he was getting ready to fly home to Dallas, he passed out in his room. The moved him to the ICU and before the end of the day had passed away. It was determined that, despite best efforts of clot reducing drugs and his moving around post-op, he'd developed a pulmonary embolism and that was what killed him.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I hope that her children learn what proper nutrition can do for you, and have to never come to the point where they consider something as drastic as surgery for weight control.
 
I'd venture to say that 99% of the people that get this type of procedure done don't need it and are taking the easy way out. I'd say that the only people that do need it are the ones that cannot stand up at all because of their weight, and even then, there are ways around that. My mind just can't comprehend how someone that only weighs 220 would even be considered for this completely life-altering surgery. I'd almost go so far as to call malpractice on that one.
 
That's very sad. I wish to best to the family she left behind. I was looking into gastric bypass myself, but decided it was better to just work for a year or two to get the weight off. I'm sorry for her famillies loss :(
 
OMG! I so feel for that family. My heart goes out to her and her family. I personally know a guy who weighed over 400 lbs who had the same surgery. When they went in to do it, they found two stomachs! Well, he died too. He was so young, and just so desperately wanted to be thinner. When I hear stories like this, it just breaks my heart. Those poor girls. :( We will pray for her family and those who knew her.
 
The oldest little girl, who is 9 is especially taking it hard, the younger one just knows mommy went away and she wont be seeing her for a very long time. Very sad. She and everone never expected anything to go wrong.
