A new start, to the new me

I joined this forum to hopefully get support from others trying to lose weight too :)

First things first, I'm 17, 5'3 and 165 pounds. I'd like to get healthier, and lose weight so I can look better and feel better about myself. I'd also like to be more in proportion, my thighs and bum are massive and totally out of proportion to the rest of my body. My ideal weight is about 130 pounds, and my short term goal is to be 150 pounds by September.

One of my biggest problems is I comfort eat, because I feel so bad about how I look, and when I comfort eat I eat things like chocolate and biscuits, which of course makes me even fatter.

I've been on a diet for two weeks so far and have lost 5 pounds, which is good. I've recently joined a gym, so that should help too, and I'm writing down exactly what I eat in a diary. My gym membership includes access to the pool, so I'm going to have to try and get over my self consciousness in a swimming costume.

Today was a good day. I managed to get to the gym, and I am so proud of myself because before I went I was really nervous, and felt everyone would be looking at me, but it was fine :hurray:

I did:
15 minutes on the excercise bike
25 minutes on the treadmill
15 minutes on the cross trainer
10 minutes on the rowing machine

and I power walked to school and back so 30 minutes of power walking :D

I'm booked in on Friday for an induction, so hopefully I'll be able to use all the machines next time. My new worry is some of my friends are members, so I'll probably go with them quite a lot, but they're all really skinny and I'll feel really fat next to them :(

Ok, I worry too much, positive thinking time: I will be fine, I managed today I can manage again with my friends.

Today has been a bad day :( Started off really well, but then my mum made curly fries and ribs for dinner, and I had to eat them otherwise she would have been annoyed. Tomorrow's weigh day, and I'm scared that it will have had an effect. This week hasn't been a particularly good week, and I really hope I haven't gained any weight. I'm going to the gym tomorrow, so if I have at last I can work some off then.

Some survery questions:

What is your current height and weight?
5"3 and 165 pounds

If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
130 pounds.

At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
At the very least 150 pounds.

Why do you want to lose weight?
To look and feel better about myself, and not to be known as 'the fat one'. I want to be able to start uni with a fresh start, so I feel confident about the way I look.

Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
Not really. Although I'd like to have lost a noticable amount of weight by September.

What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
Comfort eating, and my holiday to Washington DC in August.

Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
I eat more than I excercise, and I eat the wrong types of food.

What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
Eating less fatty foods, and excercising more.

Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
If I've ever lost weight, I've put it on almost immediately.

Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
I didn't keep up eating healthily.

What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?

Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
I do, in a food diary,

Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
I cook quite a lot, mostly different types of rice and chicken.

How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
Not often. If I'm with my friends Nandos, Chiquitas or TGIs or places like that, and if I'm with my mum mainly Chinese restaurants.

What are your three favorite foods?
Rice and chicken!

What are your three favorite restaurants?
Chinese restaurants.

What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
Eat less fatty foods, eat more vegetables and eat less sugary foods.

If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would
be different?
My thighs would be significantly smaller, my boobs would be smaller (34C), I would have no stretchmarks, a flatter stomach, and my arms would be toned.

Do you eat when you are not hungry?
Yes. I have a nasty habit of eating when I'm bored.

Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
No.

Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
No.

Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
I do when I'm sad or depressed. Mainly chocolate!

Do you eat as a reward?
No.

Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
While I'm watching TV

What do you normally eat for a meal?
Rice, vegetables and chicken.

What type of snacks do you eat?
Before the diet chocolate, and chocolate biscuits. No I snack on Snack a Jacks, Be Good To Yourself Crisps and fruit.

In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
Walking to and from school and going to the gym.

Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
Public gym.

What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
Dancing and swimming.

What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
I haven't really thought about any, my main motivation is getting thinner.

Do you have rewards for certain goals? There's a realy nice Paul's Boutique bag in Topshop that I like... when I get to 160 pounds, I'll reward myself with that.

Hey Phoebe...

I am so glad to find somebody else that's around my age. I'm 18, just graduated from high school. We have similar goals...I'm 5'4", 137 currently (started at 150ish over a year ago), and I would love to get down to 125 by August. It's always nice to have someone that you can relate with. :)

Don't worry too much about the ribs and fries, even if it does set you back a little. Everybody has days like that, and without them a diet could crash and burn. You just have to bounce right back from it.

My mom used to be the same way. Last year, when I first started dieting I would only eat 1 serving of everything, and my mom assumed that meant that I hated her food. In reality, I always had to force myself to go to the dishwasher instead of the food. I had to explain to her why I wasn't eating my normal 3 servings multiple times before she realized that I was serious about my diet.

Does your mom know what's up? Is she supportive?

hey pheobe

i also think its nice to find someone my age who is just starting out on their weightloss journey. CHeck out my diary if u like. "My new diary - Losing the uni bulge"

well done with the amount of exercise you are doing thats great! I find it hard to motivate myself at the gym sometimes and am guilty of cuttin my workouts short!

In terms of food, have you tried explaining to your mum you would like to lose weight? I have also started keeping a food diary and finding it really helps. I bought myself one of those calorie counting books. It really helps keep you on the right track when you know just one of your fave biscuits has 90cal. I always eat at least 4! Ah and have been known to eat an entire packet in a day! Yikes! I wont be going down that path again. I have also been known to eat half a family block of choc at once. A massive 663cal. This knowledge alone has helped keep me away from it. I cant believe how much i was mindlessly consuming!

Also dont be intimidated by your friends. They are your friends for a reason and will support your goals. Some of mine do not but its generrally because they dont understand how important it is to me and they are a big source of temptation, as far as both alcohol and eating out are concerned.

Stay strong and you'll reach your goals! I have already found this a very supportive community.

Thanks for replying WittBound and feelgood7 :)

WittBound- My mum is fairly supportive, but I don't think she thinks I'm taking this seriously. I think she's surprised I've stuck to my diet for this long, and doesn't really expect me to last any longer. But I will!

Feelgood7- I'll have a read of your diary :) I am keeping a food diary, which I do think is helping. I've cut out all chocolate, and my favourite chocolate biscuits, because I don't think I have the self control to only eat a small amount! I have been known to eat an entire packet of chocolate biscuits too :blush5:

Today was weigh day, and I've lost two pounds! I am very happy considering this week hasn't been good, and I've reached my goal :hurray: :D

Today I've eaten:
Breakfast- Bowl of grapes (bad I know, but I was in a rush)
Lunch- Thai chicken in wholemeal pitta bread
Dinner- Brown basmati rice and sweet and sour chicken
Snacks- Go ahead honey rice crisp bar

Exercise for today was good, went to the gym with my friend and I did:
15 minutes on the treadmill
10 minutes on the cross trainer
15 minutes on the exercise bike
5 minutes on the rowing machine- I HATE this thing!

Power walked to and from school, (to school twice) - 45 minutes.

well done with your amount of exercise and thanks for stopping by my diary! i need to increase my exercise i think! your going so good, keep at it!! :)

You seem like a true nutritionist...chicken thai in wholemeal pitta, brown basmati rice. My meals are usually along the lines of cereal, sandwich, or salad. haha

Awesome job with the workout. All of the machines you use, aside from the treadmill, are things that I tried to avoid. I hate bikes, and rowing machines, especially. If you ever want a hard workout with great next-day-soreness results try the stair master. The ones at my old gym had a kind of HIIT (high intensity interval training) setting, and it would always kick my butt.

Wow you're doing great from your food journal :D Love your diary name by the way. And I so hear you on the chocolate and biscuits. Biscuits and sausage gravy have been the temptation that led to my downfall the last two times I went off my diet. Thankfully I figured out how to make them low carb, lol. Anyway keep up the good work and thanks for posting :) Reading everyone elses diaries has been a great motivator for me so just know you're helping the rest of us too!

Thanks for the replies everyone :)

WittBound- Haha, the reason for this is I am such a picky eater, but I love the food that I do eat, so I'm basically adapting the foods I would normally eat and making them healthier! I can't stand salads- I don't like vegetables unless they're cooked and with something else.

I went on the stair master today at the gym! It was awful, but in a good way because I could feel it working! I bet I'll be feeling the soreness tomorrow :D

douknowjello- Thank you for your reply, and good luck with your weight loss :)

Didn't get a chance to update yesterday, I went to my friend’s house and I was really tired when I got back. It was a good day, managed to resist all the unhealthy food and my friend's house despite her trying to convince me otherwise!

I had:
Breakfast- Special K with skimmed milk- I don't really like cereal, but special k is low calorie and filling, so I just bear it!
Lunch- Chicken breast in wholemeal pitta
Dinner- Ciabatta bread with chicken

Snacks- Strawberries, Apple and grapes.

Over the past couple of days I have had a few nice comments about the way I look :D My friend's mum who I haven't seen in ages, asked me if I'd lost weight and said I was looking really well :D And today someone at school said I was looking a lot slimmer :hurray:

I haven't noticed any difference, but it's a really nice confidence boost, and it's great to keep me motivated.

Food for today:

Breakfast: Pineapple slices and banana and strawberry smoothie
Lunch- Slice of ciabatta bread
Dinner- Brown rice and sweet chilli chicken

Snacks- Snack a jack popcorn

Exercise:
Didn't walk to school today, I got a lift, but I went to the gym. I thought I would be getting an induction to the weights, but it was more like a cardio personal training session. The trainer worked me very hard, and I went on some new machines I did:
10 minutes on the treadmill
10 minutes on the cross trainer
15 minutes on the recumbent exercise bikes
5 minutes on the rowing machine.
10 minutes on the step machine
I also did 10 minutes on another new machine, but I can’t remember its name. It was a cross between a step machine and a treadmill, but it was different from a cross trainer.

I'm exhausted after all that, but tomorrow’s my rest day :hurray:
