To completely understand my situation, I need to be honest and say that I have suffered from an eating disorder for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately I never did "enough" harm to warrant an intervention.
Doesn't make sense? What if I said that I was a ballerina since I was 3, and danced competitively until I was 20 years old. In that world, I was nothing new. I wasn't even underweight even though I would skip more meals than I would eat. And still...I was the "fat" girl even though I didn't break 100 lbs until I entered college. Talk about a distorted body image.
I have never been terribly underweight, but I have NEVER been healthy. I was not the skeletal body that is the poster image of an anorexic girl. As my mom always said, "You are a girl from a family of rounds in a world of oblongs." In other words, ladies in my family have some major curves!
So here begins my journey to lose a little weight but STAY HEALTHY and MAINTAIN A HEALTHY BODY image.
I am not terribly overweight, although post-college graduation I have gained some weight (I don't allow myself to skip meals anymore-my life resolution). I just want to be in shape and happy with my body for the first time in my life. I am so ready for this...and so ready to make a lifelong change. I know I am strong enough, and I know I will make it through and be able to be a VALID role-model for the young girls I teach how to dance. I refuse to be the instructor who pushes laxatives and lettuce like candy. And I refuse to waste another day thinking that this is the only way to look good in a leotard.
My starting weight is 150 (top of the BMI chart for my height and age group). My goal is to be a healthy middle of the road BMI, which is approximately 25 lbs. away. Wish me luck!!
