A fat man and a marathon

Sorry about the job situation, but it sounds like you already have alternative options. Don't let this get you off track with the weight loss. I have no idea what you do for a living, but losing weight can't help but increase your employment options in most career fields. I know for me losing the 60 pounds would open up all kinds of options that I would not have pursued as a fat chick!!

Hang in there and get back on track with the food, the running, and the weights. I read an article this morning about how most folks who are trying to lose weight overlook the value of weight lifting in addition to the cardio.

Have a good one...

Hey, i complete marathon but my bad luck i lost chance to won.

Awesome! Nice job, man. I love hearing about other people running marathons, and knowing that soon I'll be one of them. It was kinda cool watching the Biggest Loser last night and seeing them all run one, got me fired back up about my race. 178 more days until my half! I wish it would get here sooner to be honest. I just want to do it already!

Yeah, I was in sales right after college. Raising money for various charities. And it was mostly all pretty girls and me, a big, sweaty (out in the FL sun), fat guy. Haha! I did well though, must have been my awesome personality. :smilielol5:

Now I'm working with the developmentally disabled, but I plan on being a nurse a few years down the road. Why do I keep getting involved in jobs that are mainly with skinny women? So it'll be nice to be fit once I get in the medical field.

Did 20 minutes on the bike yesterday, walked a half mile at 8% incline, and then did some weights. Today going to run another 1.5 miles, do my other set of weights, and maybe some bike again.

Can't wait until this weeks over and I'm back on track in the 270's!

And since the icons are working again. :biggrinjester::party::grouphug::patriot:

Hi there!

I just started reading your journal and I love it! Looks like you are doing great with your weight-loss and training. I would love to do a marathon sometime before I turn 30 ... I figure that's a pretty good timeline for me :) You started off at a very similar weight as I have and it really gives me hope for all of the things that I can (and will!) accomplish.

You're an inspiration!

Hey Addie, thanks for stopping by! I've always wanted to do a marathon too, so I figured, what the hell, lets just do it! Maybe you should sign up for a 5K, you can even walk one to start and then add in light jogging.

Ran 1.5 miles after work, alternating between 90 seconds at 5.2 and 60 seconds of running increasing from 5.6 to 6.2. Ran a little faster hoping that it'd get me ready for the 3.1 on Saturday. I was tired the last 60 seconds at 6.2, but not exhausted. I think if I gritted it out and had a garbage bag next to me to puke in afterwards, I'd be able to run a sub 10 minute mile. I remember it was 17 laps in my old health club for a mile, and I did that in 6:27 once when I was 17. I was like 210 then and had run every day all summer. I simply can not wait until I can kick some ass like that again. Run like the wind instead of an old fat man, BUT I'm forcing myself to not go too hard and not be so dang competitive with myself. Me and my friends can turn a game of tossing a tiny nerf football around the couches into a ultra competitive match of screaming and cheering ... so it's hard to take it easy, but I feel so much better in my shin, so I'm on the right track.

I read an article in Runners World today about how running form is much better when people don't think about it, so I try not to, but I ran in my old shoes today and I'm kinda convinced that my right and left feet work differently. I'm definitely running on the outer side of my right foot, but I feel like my left foot flattens out a bit and pronates in when I run. Whatever, pain is gone completely now so no worries, but I gotta wonder how common that is or if I'm just batshit crazy. :biggrinjester:

Then I did benching and rows with dumbells, and ACTUALLY had someone correct my form on the rows. That was so nice, because I was using the cables, but decide to try dumbells and totally messed it up. He told me to move my leg back and open up my form, and WOWZA! that totally made a difference. Them guys are so nice. I always here stories in other people's journals, but it's true ... the meatheads are very helpful (I say that as an aspiring meathead). At home I did squats (my form is soooo much better and I'm going to add weight soon), deadlifts, and then I grabbed a kitchen chair to do step ups like in Steve's workout, but my dang head HIT THE CEILING when I tried them! It was a pretty high chair though. Didn't want to bang my head 36 times with 3 sets of 12. So I skipped that one. They have stackable plastic thingy's at the health club, but someone was in the area. Next time I'll just do them at the club though!

I was planning on posting my food, but why do I always ramble on so much? This is getting too long, so I'll just say that Subway Buffalo Chicken subs are pretty much AMAZING, and I hope they stay on the menu forever. :drool5:

No gym today for the first time this week. Found myself between running days and weightlifting days, so I said, screw it and just enjoyed my 6 hours off between shifts!

B - Enlish Muffin w/ Peanut Butter - 300 calories
S - Yoplait Yogurt -110 calories
L - 1 1/2 cups veggies, 3/4 cup rice w/ salsa, 1 can tuna - 400 calories
D - 12" Tuna sub from Subway - 1030 (Damn! Waaay more than the turkey)
S - Small snickers blizzard from DQ - 680

2550-ish calories -- Definitely underestimated the Sub and Blizzard, thought I was closer to 2000 ... oh well.

5K in the morning. My first ever organized event! I've never even run with a partner before. Heard there's going to be quite a few people, though I don't know why all these crazies want to run at 9:30 in the morning in this freezing cold!

Good luck at your 5K tomorrow! Hold on tight to your iPod if you're bringin' one... it's like a stampede of animals escaping a zoo when you first take off! Stick with your partner if you can but leave
'em behind if you have to! Do you have a goal for this race? For my first 5K mine was to simply run the whole time! No matter how slow that meant... see what you can do... I bet you'll zip right through the race no problem. Somethin' about it... the people all coming together, the pride in yourself and what you are doing this race for! You're going to see so many different kinds of people there... and I bet that as you're running past some of them.. you're gonna see a few that are gonna inspire you, push you, cheer you on. Cherish it!

Aside from all that.... HAVE FUN!!!!! :D

Thanks for the encouragement Sarah! Had tons of fun. Had to be a few hundred people there at least. And LOTS of dogs! Woof woof! It was a party for everybody!

OMG I sweated sooo much in the 18 degree weather. DEFINITELY too many layers. My goal was under 35:00 and I ran a 32:53!! That's a 10:36 pace! I got so jacked up with all the amazing people there I ran the first half in 15:30 ... waaay ahead of my goal, and I actually HAD to walk for a minute the last mile ... :leaving:

AHHHHHHH!!! That made me sooo mad at myself, I didn't HAVE TO, but I got lazy! It was just a pace thing though. Saw a few people there I knew too. And it was amazing seeing so many people out running. Little kids, old ladies, little pugs, big labs, and everyone wearing jingle bells (except for me :( ... left mine at home). It was a ring-a-ling chorus! Holy cow, look at all these runners! It's like they all came out of hiding and put on their spandex and did their strange stretches on the same day! Haha. And they had all sorts of goodies at the end, pizza, soup, drinks, but I just grabbed a bagel.

Then after the 5k I went to the gym, and did some weights including step-ups. I added 5 blocks to the stepper thing (leg at like a 90 degree angle when stepping up) and DAMN! 3 sets of 24 steps on there was almost more of a workout than the 5K! After working all night, and standing from 7A-10P on top of it, my legs were actually hurting pretty bad. Can't believe how sore I was actually. The sign of progress I guess! Just got out of the hot tub though ... thank god for that. :)

Fun times, good people, hard work. I love all ya out there. Seriously, I've got such a great life filled with so many positive people. Lets keep kicking ass and taking names and show December what's up.

Tomorrow watching lots of football and making a new recipe of white bean chicken chili ... A HUUUGE POT, so it better be good. :drool5:

I'm exhausted now. I need sleep. I'll check up on all your progress tomorrow.

:seeya:

WOW!!! Congratulations!!!! That is just so awesome. Hope you can walk tomorrow ;)

I actually woke up this morning and feel FANTASTIC! I was worried I'd be really sore, but I'm completely fresh w/o any soreness. I haven't weighed myself for a few days so I was jacked up to see if I'd gotten out of the 280's and ... 281. Argghh! That's lame. Hopefully I hit the 270's for my official Tuesday weigh-in.

Yay! What fun ... glad you had such a great time.

Also, I'm jealous of your hot tub! haha :)

Well, don't be too jealous, b/c it's at my parents house. I stayed here after moving back from FL, and was hoping to move out the 1st, but want to make sure the job situation holds up first. But it's not ALL bad ... the hot tub in winter is nice!

And I'd like to give myself some props for the chicken chili I made ... corn, tomatoes, onions, garlic white beans, chicken breast, chilis, green salsa, peppers, spices and broth. It's delicious! And I made a whole 8 qt pan FULL! Like, almost cant put the lid on the pan full. :) So I'm gonna have to freeze some and make my whole family eat it. And I put in the ingredients into a calculator and IT'S ONLY 148 CALORIES for a cup! So a heaping bowl is 300 calories. And I have enough room to sprinkle some melted chedder on it. That seems low though so I don't quite trust it. Now just gotta make sure I don't eat too much of it so I hit my Tuesday goal.

I've been doing pretty good, but it seems like every single day I have a treat (DQ blizzard, oreos, hersheys bar -- 2 today!), so I'm doing a challenge to myself to not eat ANY sugary stuff until I weigh in on December 15. No cookies, no candy bars, no soda, no chocolate for THE NEXT 9 DAYS!

I'm also going to ditch my crystal light packs and yoplait yogurt and other artificial sweeteners since they just make me crave more sugar. I hope I can make it through, and I want to see how the week long change makes me feel and affects my cravings.

I've been cutting back on my sugary sweets intake, too. And, I must say that something that impressed me a lot is the power of a strong fruit. I usually eat half a grapefruit or some dried cranberries when I'm feeling strong sugar urges, and I'm actually pleasantly surprised that it usually works incredibly well. I have had a few cookies (and a slice of pie on Thanksgiving) in the last couple of weeks -- but I haven't had any candy or chocolate for at least 2 weeks, and no soda for close to a month now.

You can do it!!

:iagree: I am ready to show December what's up now! :D

Congrats on the run!!! Great timing!!! Wasn't it so amazing how many people came together for that!? Makes ya wanna do it again and again and again :D

Good luck with your no sweets quest this week! It is so hard to stay away. I've found lately that keeping a bunch of clementines in my fridge does the trick. A quick, easy snack. Very sweet, low in calories, and of course healthy :)

Do a little research on what sugar does to your body and you'll think twice about poisoning yourself like that!!! It's really scary and will make you think... trust me!!

Thanks for your comments in my journal. It's hard sometimes to see progress when it's so small... but you gotta start somewhere right ;)

Way to go a month without soda. I drink diet on occasion, but haven't had a regular soda in ages. It seems like when I drink diet though I just want more and more of it. It's the teachers used to tell us pot was a gateway drug. Well diet soda is my gateway drug for cake and cookies and the really bad stuff! I really need to get more fruit in my diet too. I eat veggies like they're going out of style, but definitely lack w/ the fruit.

I WANT to do more runs, and I saw a few going in January ... but it's going to be sooooo cold then. Maybe I'll man up and do another one then. What are clementines anyways? Can't say I've ever had one.

You're doing awesome! You may not get as drastic results as some of us because you didn't start off as a total fatass like me. :) Keep it up ... you CAN see a difference.

So today marks the end of my family's Biggest Loser competition. My official weigh-in is normally tomorrow, but since I weighed myself on a Monday during week 1 of the biggest loser, I'm going to play fair and count today's. My brother, sister, mom and dad all put $2 a week into a pot for the 13 weeks Biggest Loser was on ($130 total), and the one who lost the biggest % gets the money. OF COURSE I WON! Actually I didn't even want to play because I knew I'd win, and I probably won't take my bro's money since he lost most his weight BEFORE the competition started. I weighed 311 13 weeks ago and 279.5 this morning.

So in a little over 3 months I lost 31.5 pounds and 10.13%. My goal was 10%. Just made it! (granted I slept in today and didn't weigh myself until 11 am, but still ...) I think my dad lost like 15, my sister 10, and my mom 5-10.

Off to do a 2 mile run, 20 minutes on the bike and then I've been designated to make my famous potato wedges for the Packer game tonight. And there's going to be buffalo wings, and bbq wings and some kind of treat. I'm gonna stick to some chicken chili and a few wedges though. Day of no sugar underway!

I love watching Biggest Loser, it motivates me like crazy. Having a competition with your family like that is such a great idea! What fun, and congratulations to all of you on your weight loss.

Oh, by the way, clementines are these delicious, sweet tiny orange-like fruits.

This time of year you can get boxes like for only $5 or $6. They're a great choice to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Maybe I'll have to buy some of those ... the sound delicious!

Did not eat any of the donuts, ice cream or soda last night ... so onto day 2! Pretty easy actually. But I left my dang chili at home and ended up eating a bunch of wings and mini wieners. Not too bad though.

It's currently snowing, and the roads stunk on the way in. I miss FL. Too bad I love my family or I could just bail right now. :)

No time for the gym today, but it went great yesterday. Varied the speed and did a nice easy 2 miles at a 11:08 pace. Got to get it down to 9:40 for a sub 30 min 5K. So nice to be back up to runs of 2, 2, 3 this week. Another month or so and I'll finally be getting some nice 4 mile runs in every other day. And I love just 3 days a week since I stay so fresh and it lets me focus on getting a well-rounded workout my non-running days.

Clementines are just like little oranges - but they are easier to peel and really tiny, and they are already split into little wedges. You can buy pretty big crates of them for real cheap this time of the year. Keep em in the fridge or even in your car so they stay cold and they are a great snack on the run :D

The biggest loser challenge with your family is soo cool! Congrats on the win :) I can't wait to see the finale of the show tonight... I've never actually watched it until I myself started losing weight... I'm so interested in fitness and health now... never thought I'd see the day considering I always thought it was okay to go out to breakfast... eat a huge ham and cheese omelet and hashbrowns and toast, then go to cousins subs for lunch and eat a whole turkey sub, then go out to a movie and eat popcorn and drink a slushie, then order some toppers and pig out on beer and pizza! Yes... all in one day! Eeek!

Enjoy the snow! I'm in Whitewater right now so I think I'm around your area (Janesville, right?) So we're supposed to get a lotta snow tonight... *snow day please!*

See ya :waving:

Like 30 min away I think. I know a few people that commute to school up there. I know what you're saying about eating out. I can think of so many days where I probably packed away 5000 calories w/o even batting an eye! And if I went out drinking. And then 2 am Topper sticks. AHHH! Don't ever eat Marvin's. We used to joke that they put crack in their garlic cheeseburgers. They're not even good, yet sooooo addicting. It's great being healthy. I can't believe I used to stuff my body full of that crap every day.

Supposed to drive up to Madison after work but everyone keeps telling me the roads suck ... guess I'm just going to go home and lounge around and have a lazy winter night and watch the Biggest Loser. The finale's the best anyway. I read that the season 1 winner gained like 30 pounds in water weight back in 2 days after the show. So it may not be the healthiest what they do to win money ... but I'm a total sucker for reality TV. Hate on if you want.

Had Chili for breakfast w/ an English muffin with peanut butter, chili for lunch and ... drumroll please .... more chili tonight probably. Halfway gone w/ the pot almost!

I seriously hate the winter. Feels like I'm TRAPPED inside at work and it's only DAY 1 of snow. Ahhh! Drive safe today.

My coworker just told me they changed it to a Blizzard warning w/ 15 inches projected for tonight.

Collecting my winnings today of $104! Good thing, since with all this snow turns out I need to buy a shovel (for when I get stuck at work!), an ice scraper (happily threw mine away the day I drove across the Georgia Flordia border), and 4 new tires tonight!

Onto day 3 of no sugar or artificial sweeteners! Going very easily actually. I think I was just being too lenient before, but now I have to force myself to be strict. And it turns out I end up eating fruit every night now! Wowza are bananas not the best food ever or what!!

If I don't get stuck at work gonna hit the gym and do weights and cycling tonight. Weighed in at 277 this morning! Hoping for 275 by next Tuesday.

Scrambled eggs with chicken and green and red peppers for breakfast. Lunch is gonna be a buffalo chicken salad. Good start.
