A couple of questions

firstly sorry if making a thread to ask questions is frowned upon on here, i only discovered the place last night.

secondly i am 19 years old male, 13.3 stone and 6'1 foot tall, i have belly fat and fat around my hips that i need to shift, i've lost and gained weight before so i know i am capable.

unfortunately i used to play alot of tennis and football to lose weight, circumstances dictate and i am no longer free to play at certain hours, so i need alternatives.

I might be sneered at for this! but i really dislike jogging and running, i have done it the last week but i am afraid i will lose motivation if i force myself to maintain this boring scheme (wrong word can't think..)

so my questions:

1) what exercises would you recommend, which are not running and do not require weights, which will help lose belly fat - also is there a website with instructions (i've been on so so many sites which result in having to pay)

2) i have pretty irregular eating patterns, but i have started eating well, will this diet survice for a normal 19 year old?

breakfast; 2 bananas and 1 apple
lunch; beans on toast
dinner; chicken and pasta
fluids; 3 litres+ of water

what would you recommend changing, baring in mind i have little scope for change really...

Thanks for listening to my ramblings and thanks in advance for any help i may recieve

a truely overwhelming response! haha..

everyone else seemed to have gotten a response, did i not conform to forum etiquette or something??

i'm so ignorant to the whole weight loss game, so i maybe asking pretty 'obvious' sounding questions, but i am genuienly curious and i don't want to lose motivation but i feel as though i don't know what i'm doing...

say for the last week, i've done cardio exercises for twenty minutes a night and been jogging, aswell as eating properly.. when do you expect to see some sort of change in my body.. like if i am burning energy and using more calories than i intake, when will there be some sort of change - is it near instantly or does it differ for every person?

thanks in advance, if i get a response that is!

p.s; this is not a smear on your forum, i have looked around many threads and seen helpful responses, would just fancy a few to my questions :)

I think the reason you didn't get a lot of responses is that you don't seem terribly open to change. You pretty much said in your last sentence that you don't have scope for change ... so it's hard to offer advice in that circumstance.

If I were to advise you, I'd first say that you need to keep in mind that you can't target fat loss ... you can lose fat all over, but you can't just lose from your belly or whatever. Losing weight and getting fit is a whole body endeavor.

13 stone (which I think is around 185 lbs, right?) is a decent weight for someone who is 6'1". You probably are more in need of becoming fit and healthy, than losing weight (although you may drop 5-10 ish pounds of fat as you gain muscle mass).

Given that, diet is the most important part of getting and looking fit. I'd say that your diet looks pretty poor, to be honest. Other than the apple and the banana, there are no veggies there. It looks fairly carb heavy, and quite unbalanced.

You should be trying to eat around 2500 calories a day, to maintain your current weight. That should be a healthy mix of lean proteins, veggies and fruit, and complex carbs (things like whole grains, oats, brown rice, etc.).

As for exercise, there are plenty of exercises that you can do that are bodyweight only ... if you read the stickies here you'll get a lot of information on exercising options. Things like squats, lunges, pushups, chinups, dips, burpees, etc. are all good options.

The thing is, there's plenty you can do, but you have to be open to doing them, otherwise nothign will change. :)

Everything you need can be located on this sight. Walking is perfectly fine for exercising and will certainly help you reach you goals. If you are looking for a resistence routine, try death by bodyweight. I dont know much about it but have heard some people suggest it. It's worth a shot.

To be blunt, that diet is awful. Not nearly enough protein, no healthy fats, absolutley no veggies and no dairy. Do you know how many calories that is or what you should be eating?

Now here is what i recommend. Start reading the sticky threads. They contain all the possible info that you need. Read, read and read some more. When you are done reading, read again. You are young and have a long life ahead of you. Now is the time to build your habits. Stick around, you'll be fine.

As far as no response, sometimes posts go un-noticed.

is it not true that my diet should be dictated by my inactivity during the day?

work in a pretty static environment where i do very little other than sit there all day - pushing buttons... i walk to and from work, which is a 45 minutes walk, coupled with 20 minutes cardio exercise and a 20 minute jog at night... as long as i feel capable of sustaining this exercise - why is it a necessity that i give my body anything more??

i am afraid my intake will be too high and as a result my exercise will be insufficient...

BUT, perhaps that is the case anyway, for nearly 2 weeks i have been eating as sensibly as possible, meaning i have cut out eating any rubbish and kept exercising - and seen zero change, so maybe i do have to alter things slightly...

Have you seen results?

its a weird one really.. i feel better and i think i look thinner..

BUT

my weight on the scales has stayed exactly the same, so maybe just because i am feeling better im telling myself i look it.. when in reality i am not??

i'll be happy when i am 12 stone again - then i'll maintain my fitness, instead of allowing myself to get lazy again...

what is a healthy weight range for someone 6'1"? 168 seems very skiiny to me. It's more about body composition for you.

Please, you're young and have to abilities to get into the shap you want. Dont end up like me and wait till your 35.

To some degree, yes. The more active you are, the more you can eat.

But WHAT you eat is as important (and in some ways more so) than how MUCH you eat. You need to eat a balanced diet.

Well ... obviously you came here and posted saying that you want to lose weight and reshape your body, so I think the answer is pretty self-evident, right? :) If you want to just be skinny and unhealthy, then eat whatever. If you want to be healthy and fit looking, then you need ot give your body the proper nutrients. It's pretty much that simple.

ah yes, but that was what i had just starting eating, before then i was eating chocolate, crisps, fastfood and other rubbish.. not alot but i've completely cut it out...

i suppose subconciously i knew it was a bad diet hence me asking for approval, its just pretty hard completely revamping your diet and upping my exercise

I'm back.. sorry if this is considered a slur towards everything this website represents and is considered unhealthy...

but i am now down to 12 stone, 5 pound and it is entirely noticable.. i feel alot better and look alot better.. which is all i was after

i am going to try and lose 5 more pounds then see how i feel/look..

i haven't been eating 3 properly sized meals.. but i have drank alot of water and only eaten fruit, cereal and soup

apologises if this is perceived as glorifying not eating 'properly'

but i am particularly proud of myself for having the will power to exercise every night, sometimes twice a day, entirely cut out any junk food and eat what i set out to eat.

will keep you posted with my progress and will acknowledge if i put the weight back on, which i have read will eventually happen - personally i think thats just a scare tactic..?

Well the truth is that if you eat very little food, you will lose weight.

Will you be healthy? No. And I'm willing to bet that you're not going to spend the rest of your life eating the way you're eating now. So what happens when you get tired of beans on toast for lunch after 3 or 4 months of eating like this? What happens when you want an alcoholic drink or you decide to go out with friends and eat something else? What happens when you eat more than 3 pieces of fruit for breakfast?

Call it a "scare tactic" or call it whatever you want. But when the day comes that you decide that beans on toast for the 210th time is too much and you eat something else, you will start gaining weight back.

Learning to eat healthily for life is the only way to sustain real weight loss. It's up to you to decide if you want to do it or not and if you don't, then it doesn't really affect me.

Kop, if you really want to lose belly fat, unfortunately, you will still need to run(cardio) and lift weights. Weight Lifting builds muscle and the more muscle you develop the lesser fats will stay in your body. Even if I suggest you a website, still losing belly fat requires weights(every instructor will tell you that). The Spartans from 300 didn't have those intimidating six pack abs just by chasing invaders, they lift weights.

Your breakfast should include protein to stop you from craving. Instead of 3, put 6 meals a day. Do small meal everytime to promote fast metabolism-only with fast metabolism there could be change against FATS. 3 liters of water was nice but try to do 5 to really cleanse those toxins hiding in your muscles...Hope this helps
