A couple of questions

I thought you would be the people to ask - the folks who have had success, the ones who have an "after" in the before / after world of diets.

I'm wondering about exorcise during the induction phase of the Atkins diet. Should I just be going for it at the gym and on the road? After the first few days I feel terrible - which I understand is to be expected. Will energy return during the induction phase?

Also, what do do with the extra skin that is showing? I have been fat all my life and particularly while I was young. I've lost a lot but really need to loose another forty - hence the induction. But what becomes of the hanging skin around the belly and chest? Any way to be rid of it short of surgery?

Thanks, This community seems like just what a body needs to succeed.

I'd suggest not going on ANY diet...

I'd suggest making small, lifetime changes that will keep you healthy for the rest of your life- not just until the winter.

I was never able to just switch to a healthy lifestyle. Atkins was the only thing that I was able to stick to for weight loss. My first 40 lbs or so was strictly atkins, no exercise. I added in exercise and have slowly switched to a low glycemic index lifestyle - I don't call it a 'diet' at this point because it's just the way I eat now. I'm down 70~75 lbs now and as long as I exercise, I'm maintaining. Since I'm not trying to keep my body in ketosis on atkins, I find it's much easier to justify a cheat item here and there. I still want to lose about 10~15 more and I know if I did the induction phase for about 3~4 weeks, I could probably knock most of that off.

I know what you mean about not feeling great during the first 2 weeks or so. I had headaches and low energy at first, but that's your body adjusting to not having sugar as it's primary energy source. As you adjust, your energy level goes up and the headaches disappear. One unexpected positive side effect that happened for me was that I stopped having acid reflux on Atkins. I personally recommend Atkins for weight loss, solely based upon my experience. Long term however, it really can't be all that healthy. But you have to be careful with what you do when you stop Atkins, because the weight can jump back on quickly if you're not careful. Slowly add carbs back in and exercise.

I'm not sure how to answer the excess skin question. I think a lot of that depends upon age and genetics as to how that will or won't tighten up.

How long were you in Kitosis in order to lose 40 lbs?

I'm sure there are lots of variables, but just trying to get a ballpark estimate.

Thanks.

I was striving for under 30 carbs a day for about 5 months. I don't think I was in ketosis that whole time, but that's about how long it took.
