90 lbs lost; size 18 to size 1

In 2008/2009 my mother took a photo of myself and some friends. I was shocked to see how much weight I had put on! I had been depressed and was eating fast food several times a week, sometimes twice a day. After seeing that photo, I vowed to lose the weight. It wasn't easy though. I had many ups and downs. Sometimes I would lose 5 lbs only to gain it back. I can't tell you how much I did the yo-yo thing!

By 2012 I had lost 40 lbs. The weight loss was slow, and most of that time was spent in the 180s (I was 220 lbs when I started). By the time 2012 hit, I was convinced I would never be thin. Then...in August 2012 I got sick. The illness lasted for 3 weeks before my doctors figured out that I was allergic to gluten. Immediately I cut out any and all wheat products from my diet and felt better right away. As an added bonus, the rest of the weight melted off during the next year.

Throughout this past year I have found myself constantly running to the thrift stores to buy new clothes. At 220 lbs I was about an 18 in jeans (don't know for sure because I wore elastic waistbands). When I was 180 lbs I was a size 14. Now, a year later, I'm 130 lbs and a size 1!!!

The picture there is very important to me. The part with the red shirt was the photo that pushed me to lose the weight. The other one is from recently when I went to the store and found I was a size 1. It's amazing the difference 90 lbs makes! :D

I came to this site because I want to help others with their weight loss goals. I lost the weight by eating healthy whole foods and staying away from prepackaged processed foods. Cutting out gluten helped tremendously as well! Now, I do eat junk food but only a few times a month...if that. Although, I do drink a lot of soda from time to time. Point is, I had a clean diet for most of my weight loss. I truly believe that the fad diets are more damaging than anything else and they don't help you to keep the weight off because they're not meant to be long term diets. What is needed, truly needed, are lifestyle changes with what you eat and your activity. It's difficult at first and I always suggest moderation in everything. That includes dietary changes. The thing is, these changes are sustainable after you lose the weight and can help you keep it off. Plus, healthy food does taste good and there are plenty of recipes that prove that. It's not as hard as one thinks. Heck, it takes as much time to cook a healthy dinner as it does to cook an unhealthy one. lol

Anyway, that's all for another discussion. :D

I want to add some things about losing so much weight. Namely...some things that really stand out in my daily life.

When driving I notice sometimes how the seat belt feels against my body. It feels different, and reminds me of how much smaller I've become. I also notice how far my body is from the steering wheel, when my arms are the same distance as always.

When I look down at my lap I sometimes feel like I'm looking at someone else's legs. Also, if the seat I'm in has arm rests, I definitely notice that I take a lot less space in the seat.

When I draw my knees up while sitting I notice how my leg presses against my body. I could never bring it so close before. At one point, when I was at my heaviest, I couldn't even cross my legs. Now I can press my leg firmly against my body without having it pushed out by my belly.

My face looks totally different! You can't tell from the pic I posted, but the one on my profile shows my face more clearly. Sometimes when I look in the mirror I do a double take.

It's little things like that which remind me of how far I've come.

A friend of mine pointed out to me yesterday that my photo looks fake. She said that because the flash is in my face and I didn't have my snake tattoo when the first photo was taken...well you get the idea. So, I went through some photos and found one of me shortly after the first sitting for the tattoo. I was somewhere between 180 and 190 there...size 16 I think. Anyway, it should clear up and doubts that anyone might have...

Looks like you have done really well, good job. And in a good way as well - as you said, a change of lifestyle, something that is sustainable, and that you can keep doing for the rest of your life. Congratulations!! :)

As for the pictures, no, I don't think they look fake at all. I have gotten tattoos for stages of my weight loss journey, as a reward, so my 'before' pictures would look vastly different from the 'after' ones as well - only that I haven't quite reached the 'after' stages yet. More like 'in between'. I hope to have some pictures to show off like yours at some point in the future.

Again, well done. :)

Congratulations! Your observations were fun to read, and things I remember and miss about being thinner. I reached a huge milestone in my fitness journey and it's because I finally started implementing everything I always knew about clean eating. A whole food, plant-based diet is really the key to a healthier and happier life. While I don't have a gluten allergy, eliminating refined wheat products and limiting my whole wheat consumption has had a huge effect on my overall well-being. Thank you for sharing your photos and story!

Great job! I want to lose around that much weight, but am worried about lose/sagging skin? Is that an issue you had to face? I am 5'8".
