600 calorie diet...?

My mom came into town and told my grandma about doing a 600 calorie diet to help with her diabetes. Now, my grandma is somewhat overweight, and the whole family started trying to eat better, so she went onto this like a dog on a bone. My mom is joining for support, as well as the male members of the family (on a less restrictive diet, but still for moral support). I'm going to do the same, but probably fib on it since I do work, dance, walk, and stay fairly active.
What should I make sure my grandma eats? There's no way I can talk her out of it, and personally I need to restrict my food amounts since I've been hovering at a weight for a long time (up to 2 months now) with no change. She does a 2 mile walk 3 times a week, but other then that she's not very active. I know their planning on focusing on veggies and protein, but is there more that we should be aware of nutrients wise?
Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

I know, I really wish my grandma would at the very least (she has enough medical problems without halving her calories in a day), but I've mentioned it and been shot down. I'm even looking at that for me, and thinking I'd be much closer to a 1000. But I don't know how to convince her to start small and see how it goes. So at this point I'm just hoping she can get the nutrients she needs.

I don't know what it is with old women sometimes, but you just can't get through to some of them. Try your best, but don't lose sleep over it.
Your best thing to do would probably to yell at your mom for putting the idea in your grandmother's head. If you grandmother listens to your mom in the first place, she might listen if your mom says she was wrong.

I've always heard/thought that for women, you don't want to ever eat below 1200 calories in a day.... not sure how accurate that is, but 600 seems ridiculously low. especially if she has diabetes... good luck..

That is completely out of balance and unhealthy. She needs to eat more calories than 600 per day, especially of the diabetes. You and your family should try and talk to her. Also, you need to eat more than 1000 calories. You will end up putting on weight because of the low calorie diet. Your grandmother will do the same. The body eventually will go into starvation mode and hold onto everything you put in it.

This is a very unhealthy idea. Nobody should really go under 1200 calories a day. If under 1000 there is no way to get all the nutrients you need throughout your day. Also eating a 1200 calorie healthy diet with exercise will have you lose more weight than a 600 calorie diet.Eating that little calories a day causes your body to panic and it will go into starvation mode and will hold on tight to your fat tissue. It will still burn some fat, just much more slowly than if you were eating properly.

AI think this refers to a study that was put out a short time ago that stated that a person with type II diabetes could reverse their disease by going on a 600 calorie per day diet for 6 weeks. If I had type II i would consider it so I could get off insulin only, ONLY after discussing it with my doctor. Good luck to her

You can't 'reverse' diabetes, no matter which type. You can limit the symptoms down to a point where medication is no longer needed though, which is commonly mistaken with being 'cured'.

As for the 600 calorie diet, no responsible doctor will suggest that to anybody, especially not a person suffering from diabetes. If you are suffering from diabetes, you need very balanced nutrition, and you have to pay even more attention to getting enough, but not too much, of everything. Going on a crash diet and starving yourself is not going to help at all, on the contrary. Even *if* (and that's a might big if) going down to 600 calories might lessen or erase your diabetes II symptoms, they will come back with a vengeance as soon as you go back to normal eating.

Screwing around with your body and your metabolism like that is the last thing on earth you want to do if you have diabetes.

Please don't follow a 600 calorie a day diet! Your body will be in starvation mode, and it's very unhealthy. I've worked with lots of women who tried the HCG diet (500 calories a day) and came to me because they were losing their hair and nails because their bodies were depleted of vitamins and nutrients.

If you even concider 600kcal per day shows lack of knowledge. I would suggest you read more about healthy diets and try follow something you can live with. Not a 14 days - Almost no food diet.

600 calories is very low. I hope that she did not try doing that? Anyhow, in case she is still struggling you could look into Shakeology. It is low in sugar and has helped many people with the same issues. Is loaded with vitamins, minerals, pre-biots and lots more.... No matter what I just hope that everyone is doing ok. ;)
