As a semi-serious weight lifter I've been trying unsucessfully for some time now to lose some fat in order to see more definition. I've struggled because my willpower is such that whenever I got sugar cravings, I'd hit the fridge and take on board thousands of empty calories -all in between meals.
I just wanted to quickly share what has finally started to work for me: Cutting out refined carbohydrate, and sugar.
Basically I decided to test the theory that when you take on lots of sugar, your insulin levels spike leading to further cravings...for more sugar!
So for one day, I tried eating more unrefined Carbohydrate (switching to wholemeal bread, brown rice etc.) Hey presto! That night, I didn't feel like raiding the fridge. Since then, I've started eating all low-GI foods.
I didn't cut out carbs, you need them to maintain muscle as much as anything.
So now that I've cut the sugar intake, and stick only to low GI-foods, I can happily go for long periods without getting hungry. It's now 3 weeks, and for the first time in 2 years I've lost weight -from 15.11 stone to 15.6. I'm 6'2, and aiming for about 15st.
This is a summary of what worked for me I'm not saying it will work for you, but if it helps you along the road then I'm only glad to share it.
-Cut out all sugar (you won't crave it after a day or two)
-Switch carbs to unrefined, wherever possible.
-Three meals a day, Five if you want to fire up metabolism.
-High Calcium. High Dairy. There is a lot of research into this. Look it up.
-Weight training three times a week.
-HIIT once a week.
-Some protein and carbs in each meal.
-Dietary fat is not the enemy. Some fats necessary for certain body functions.
-Avoid TRANS Fat.
-Calories cut by 600 a day.
Simple as that, it's working a treat.
