Heya! I'm 18 yrs old, 5'7'' and 172 lbs... or 170cm and 78cm. My goal is to reach 130lbs or 60kg.

I've been having issues with food for the past five years and it all started with a narrow stint of anorexia back in seventh grade. Afterwards, my hormones went out of control and I had a thyroid gland problem so I put on weight like crazy, not to mention being constantly unhappy and a workaholic in high school leading to even more snacking and binging while getting those assignments done. Now I'm in college and although I'm *trying* to be healthy, I'm STILL gaining and it's really annoying me. I mean, if it doesn't stop I'll end up being some pig with a BMI of 67 and die in my sleep as my arteries get clogged or something. Okay, so maybe I AM exagerrating slightly now but the bottom line is THIS - I'm scared and I DON'T want to gain another pound/kilo/whatever. As a matter of fact, I want to LOSE weight.

Why?
1) Shopping. Love clothes, love fashion, but want to actually try some of it myself!
2) I'm named after a Bond girl (Thanks mommy and daddy!) and kinda have a unique name so ppl keep asking me where it's from. Feels utterly EMBARRASSING to have to explain when well, you're named after a Bond girl but are eons away from it in terms of looks. It really DOES kill my self-esteem.
3) Health. I mean, who wants to die due to clogged arteries? Besides, I gotta be eating the wrong foods these days as I'm constantly fatigued!

I've been trying just about everything and anything to lose weight over the past few years, from more exercise to calorie counting to just eating healthier. I'd lose a bit then gain all of it back the moment late nights and homework assignments would take up so much time because well, studying makes ya hungry but you're sitting at you're desk the whole bloody time. So I'm trying out fatloss4idiots.com at the moment and shall be starting as of tomorrow. Hope it works and wish me luck!

Hi

Just think - you have made a really good first step by joining here. Most people are in exactly the same boat as you - we have issues with our weight and know that if we do not take control it will take control of us.

You are at the start of your adult life and deserve to go through life with the body that you want and not the body that you have.

I too have problems with my hormones - and have found that the only way for me to take control is by walking. I wear a pedometer all the time - and would recommend anyone to do the same. It challenges me to walk further which forces exercise into my life.

Set up a diary. It is useful for your own records and people will pop by and say hello or give advice and encouragement. You can pop into other peoples diaries and may get inspiration - or simply make friends.

Good luck

Take care
Margaret

Hi,

I've just joined fatloss4idiot as well although i'm not sure i'll be able to do their meal plan using the generator as i have college etc and so don't really have the time to make the different meals etc. I was wondering how you do it and how youre finding it? I'm gonna start by just tryig their casual method where you alternate the foods you eat etc withut stickin to about 20 to 30 different food as you do using the diet generator.

I think the first thing you need to address is your mindset. You seem to be convinced that if you gain any more weight there will be disastrous consequences. I've found that sort of anxiety can either be motivating or self-defeating, depending on what you do with it. For me, it led to a very devoted weight loss routine where I dropped 17 lbs...but once I was out of "panic mode" I slipped and gained half of it back! So, I'd suggest thinking in terms of making manageable long-term changes for the benefit of your health - not "how can I get down to 130 ASAP."

Following that, I would start with a reasonable goal. Slowly modifying your eating habits - cutting down on soda and junk food and replacing it with appealing alternatives (green tea, a vegetable you like) - is a good place to start. So is setting exercise goals. A food diary is a basic way to have some accountability for what you eat - the thought of having to write down "9 AM - 8 mini snickers bars" is often enough to keep you from doing it!

I think the main thing is to manage your expectations. You will not be 130 by New Years. But, you might be down a dress size by then if you work hard. Starting with a 5 lb. weight loss goal can be much less overwhelming than a 40 lb. goal.

Also, don't get too caught up on your clothing size...I know you are into fashion, and so am I. I have everything from a size 12 to a 16 in my closet, and the main thing is that it all fits me properly. If *I* can find cute stylish clothes at a 14/16 (and shop in pretty much any store), I know you can. If the problem is that certain styles of clothing are unflattering because of your weight, then focus on what styles *do* flatter, and remember than even if you lose weight your proportions probably won't change much, and proportions are truly what determines which styles flatter your figure.

And, FWIW, I am hoping to lose about the same amount of weight as you. But the difference is, I am starting at 214 lbs. and trying to get down to 170. Your current weight is my goal weight (and I'm only 5'5"). No matter what size you are, there is someone whose goal is to look like you!
