5 Tips on Training With a Professional

So, you have decided to get some personal training or group training. Here are a few tips for training with me and other professionals.

#1 Make your scheduled training times a priority.

I applaud you for making the decision to take charge of your fitness and overall health by seeking a professional to help you out. I personally put everything I have into my time with my clients as I know they are here for help, and results. I have committed my time to you. Try to understand this commitment that you have also made and stick to your scheduled training times. Tip one is to Plan in advance to schedule all that you need to do around your training. I guarantee that results will come quicker when you stick to the training and make it a priority. Your trainer purposely maps out your sessions in a way that you progress at a good pace towards your goals. If you miss these sessions, it is not only going to set you back, it is also going to put you behind in your trainer’s mapped out plan for you. Also, in most cases you are penalized monetarily for missing your scheduled time that your trainer has set aside. You might think the trainer does not care about this because they are getting paid even though you are not there. This is false, as I personally love to see my client’s succeed and I feel bad for them when they miss. You have to remember that most trainers became trainers because they love to help others.

#2 Show up to your training session with a proper mindset.

I want you to succeed, and your head has to be in the game when you show up. Like I mentioned before, I promise you that I will give you my all when you are here. Most trainers will. When you show up to a session focused on your goals and your mind set on what needs to get done, that focus will mesh with 5 Tips on Training With a Professional your trainers and it will create an atmosphere of positive change. This training time is set aside for you, by you, and from your trainer. This is one time in the day that is totally about you. I know it might be hard some days, but you need to leave behind everything else and use this time to go forward towards your goals. Remember your trainer will also feed off of your energy as well. It’s just a normal human behavior. Set aside a little bit of time to yourself before your training session and clear your thoughts of everything that doesn’t need to be there at that time. Now get into a zone of positivity that will enable you to conquer your training session like never before.

#3 Communication devices need to be left in the change room.

Unless you absolutely have to answer your communication device, then it has no place on or near you during your training session. As you can see I take my training times with my clients seriously. They are paying for a service, and I am providing one with professionalism. The bottom line is that I want you focused on what needs to get done during your time with me. I want you safe, and I also want you to learn for yourself everything I can teach you during these times together. Interrupting a training session will not only take your focus away, it will also slow down the process of results. I do like to have some fun during my sessions with clients, but it is at the right times and done so in a way that will not impede the efficiency of the training session. So, respect yourself enough to make valuable use of this time, and respect your trainer as well.

#4 Speak up, I am not a mind reader.

I am quite good at knowing limitations and understanding how the body feels. However, I will admit, I am not a mind reader. If you are too hot, let me know and I will open up a window. If you are uncomfortable in any way, speak up and let your trainer know. It is very important that we know what is going on with you so that we may adjust and make sure that we continue in the most efficient manner. Always remember that it is easier to take a break from training and miss a few minutes or a few days, than miss a week or two due to an injury that could have been avoided because you did not speak up. Again, it is important to know that we are here to help you reach your goals in an efficient way, so be smart and stay safe.

#5 Don’t let frustration get the best of you.

If it was easy to look like fitness models then everyone probably would. Now more than ever people want change yesterday. You have to realize that in most cases I have clients coming to me that are not in great shape and have gained weight over years due to not taking care of themselves properly. The key part of what I just said was “over years”. Don’t get frustrated and expect dramatic results in days or weeks, when it took you years to get that out of shape. The good news is that change will happen, I guarantee it. In this case it is your mind that will need to change the most, especially at the start of your training sessions. You need to stay focused on your goals and tell yourself that you are going to make this happen. You have made the right move towards health and fitness and change will happen, but you have to stick with it. Do not beat yourself up; in fact as soon as any negative thoughts come into your head; learn to battle them right away with the truth. The truth is that you have made a decision to change and it will happen. You are determined to get fitter and healthier for yourself, and for those you love!

hope that helps, and thanks for the interest.

very nice thread. I think above all the client's ability to listen and follow instructions may be the most important aspect of the trainer-client relationship.

thank you

Fitness Trainer

I would have to say that the most important thing is the trainers ability to understand the client, when it comes to that relationship.

We are in a position of leadership when they come to us. It is up to us to deliver results by understanding all that is the client, and what is going on with them. It is up to us to understand and lead. If they come into us in a bad mood, we have to try and turn that around. If they come to us with a physical problem that day, we have to understand, and work with it. Have compassion.

I would hope that trainers try to do this, and not just calculate coldly what they think needs to be done, without taking into consideration the clients true feelings.

I want to make it clear that I am not saying that you are doing that Fitness Trainer, I just thought I would continue with the thread.

great advice

I read your thread and i simply love it!
I will share some fitness advice with you as soon as i will be allowed to post some links...because i think you will really like it.;)

Expanding a bit on #4, ask, ask, ask and ask some more. I always encourage my clients to ask questions, and it doesnt have to be about a specific exercise, it can be about nutrition, supplements, whatever...............I have found that so many people are bombarded with fitness routines, diet programs, and supplements, everywhere they turn. What better tool than to have not only a personal trainer but someone to answer your questions.................

for anyone thinking about hiring a PT please remember this..............
