Hi,

I'm looking to burn 5kg of unwanted weight. I am fairly fit and enjoy exercise alot - I have done 30 miles of cardio in the last week on a treadmill and eat 3 what i think are fairly balanced meals. I'm drinking 2-3 litres of water a day and not eating in between meals. The running is not a problem, I just want to get alot leaner to see the muscles i have under the bodyfat.

Breakfast: Cereal and skimmed milk

Lunch: Chicken sandwich and pasta

Dinner: Meat, potato, some vegetables

Please advise me if this should do it, or if there is something i am doing drastically wrong.

Thanks alot,

Clare

A shit load of cardio with no weight training and inadequate amounts or protein intake is a surefire way to avoid being toned.

Erm thanks for that - any chance you could elaborate a little?

Steered away from weights, because i'm a bit scared of getting "massive".

As for the protein, won't that just bulk me up? Any chance you could give me an example of the kind of diet you mean?

Thanks alot - Clare

Yea, you're working under some seriously misguided assumptions here. Certainly not your fault, good information is hard to come by nowadays. This said though, what you're doing now is completely in opposition to getting lean.

Sure, you can lose weight, but weight loss and fat loss are worlds apart.

I take it you are female. Females don't get bulky. Walk into most any gym and look around at how many bulky females you see. My bet would be 1 at best. Most likely none.

Reason being:

Women aren't hormonally dispositioned to allow for serious muscle growth, even if all things are primed for it.

By primed for it, what I mean is that even in ideal situations you still need an excess of energy (caloric surplus) to fuel muscle growth.

Hopefully from this you can see that a dieting female doesn't have much, at all, to worry about.

Weight lifting is critical in the sense that it preserves muscle. You can't get lean or toned without maintaining as much muscle as possible. If you're going for that crackhead/model/mushy look though, then that's something entirely different.

Hours and hours of running each week isn't conducive to preserving muscle either. If you're primary goal is physique optimization, the order of importance is going to look something like this:

1. Diet
2. Weight lifting
3. Cardio
