400 lb Man to Cycle Across USA - Need Diet Advice

I will be cycling across America specifically to lose a large amount of weight. I've been in training for two weeks, and have lost 18 lbs already on diet loosely based on Atkins. I believe I should continue my high protein, low carb, moderate calorie diet during the trip, but I have many people telling me I will need to carb load to make it across the country.

My theory is that if I carb load, the energy I need for cycling will be coming from my food instead of from burning fat off my body. Could anyone share their thoughts on this matter.

You will need carbs during your trip. I must note that such an amount of excercise will most likely result in a lot of muscle loss thus slowing down your metabolism, without including strength training.

No endurance expert but you need carbs for energy and carbs also supply energy to the brain.

Just glanced over your site, have you talked to your doctor about your plans? IE your trip? I think you should if you haven't your very overweight, it will be very hard on your heart i'm sure.

Good Luck dude. I'm sure you'll get support here. I did hear of the fatmanwalking dude maybe you could email him, he probably has a ton of tips for you.

Def. talk with your doctor if you haven't already. Make this a safe trip :)

You will definitely need carbs. High protein is going to exhaust you on this trip. Your body is going to go through something radically different than what it's used to. In fact, I don't know that I feel comfortable saying much more than that.

You really should talk with your doctor and a dietitian before doing this.

33 lbs lost in 28 days

Hi guys,

Thanks for the feedback. I just weighed in yesterday at 399 lbs, down from 432 lbs 28 days ago. I have cycled 242 miles and remain on an Atkins like diet as I prepare to depart on my cross country trip Oct 3rd. I'm feeling stronger on the bike every week.
