3 hours before bed. myth or fact.

Is it myth that not eating 3 hours before bed helps you lose weight? I've thought this to be true for years, but I've just seen on another website that this is complete myth. The other website says that it doesn't matter when you eat during the day, it's your total input/output of calories that matters.

I find that for me, the whole point of not eating after 7 or so is to stop the mindless snacking. If I'm legitimately hungry I'll have a snack, but I need to quit putting empty calories in my mouth.

I always have a snack or two around bedtime - and haven't seen any difference at all in weight loss -it's total calories that matter -DQ's right though, some people it's best to not snack after a certain hour because they don't watch the amount of calories - as long as you are monitoring them - and being honest with them - then it doesn't matter at all

I've heard that before. The way I understand it:

If after dinner you eat nothing before going to bed, you will go to sleep with a more or less empty stomach. Your body restores during the night, which takes energy. So drifting on your last dinner and nothing extra probably creates a slight deficit, especially since the 'snacks' we tend to take are high in sugar or fat levels. This may in some cases help losing weight, especially if you take a walk before going to sleep and before breakfast the next morning.

It's probably a lot more complicated than this. I'm not sure if this is either a correct explanation, or the right thing to do.
