I’m excited about starting this journey, but I’m a little worried because I start out so fired up and then poop out in a week or two. I’ll begin to rationalize that one stop at McDonalds won’t kill me, but for me it’s rarely one trip. I’ll stop the next day, then two days later, blah, blah. I must have a very addictive personality because I get in these ruts so easily. I really want to succeed this time, though. I need to succeed. So here goes…

-- How much weight do you want to lose? 70 lbs

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight? 9 ½ months

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?

Exercise: I’ve joined 24 Hour Fitness. I really like cardio classes, but it’s been very intimidating going to the gym. I feel like everyone is looking at me, and I absolutely HATE feeling so exposed. The last time I belonged to a gym, we went to ‘aerobics’ classes, not ‘cardio pump’ or ‘circuit’ (and I was really hot in my spandex and leg warmers). I won’t quit though. I’m hoping that once I’ve been there a few times I won’t be new and no one will look at me any more.

Since I’ve only focused on cardio in the past I bought a mini personal training package so they can show me how to use some of the equipment and what to do with the weights. I’ve pretty much exhausted what I know about weights after some bicep curls and bench presses.

Diet: I MUST stop eating fast food, and start cooking again. I love to cook (actually writing a cook book) so this should be the easiest part of this journey, but it’s been the hardest. I’ve really gotten lazy. I need to start cooking on the weekends and freezing some so I can just throw it in the microwave quickly instead of grabbing a block of cheese or stopping at the Golden Wretches.

I’m lucky that I LOVE veggies, fruit, all kinds of whole grains and have more recipes and ideas at my disposal than most people. Why am I not cooking?

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal? My family and friends will help me I’m sure. It sounds bad, but I’ll probably get more (or better) support from my friends. My family has a subtle sabotage thing going on. Even though they know I’m (or someone else is) trying to lose weight, they’ll break out the Breyer’s ice cream, or homemade fudge, or new ‘organic’ treat to try. Looking for something other than a sinister reason for this, I think they want me to know that they love me like I am. I also know, though, that if I lose weight, it makes it more apparent that they aren’t losing.

-- How realistic is your goal? This time I think my goal is very realistic, 70 lbs in 9 ½ months. That’s actually a little less than 2 lbs a week. It’s even slower than what the pros say is healthy. 5 lbs a week really sounds a lot better psychologically ?, but I know, I know… I’ll be more likely to keep it off, and I’ll have fewer excess skin issues if I lose it slowly.

-- When will you start? I started this week. I’ll weigh myself every Sunday morning and will try to stay off the scales in between so I don’t obsess too much.

What Keeps Me Going
I want to feel again like I did in my 30s. I was thin, muscular, exercised regularly and loved it. I was self-confident, happy and healthy. SO.... I have made myself a promise that by the end of this year I will be closing in on the best shape of my life. I intend to keep that promise. Whatever it takes.

To me that means I must overcome any obstacle, face down any emotional monster. I will deal with each psychological mind game as it springs up on me. I must do whatever it takes, not just when it is easy… but when it is so hard that I doubt even my own abilities.

Physical Goals - Lose about 10 lbs a month
Lose 30 lbs. by the end of November
Lose additional 40 lbs. by the end of May 2008

Toning:
- Abs (focus hard – always a trouble spot)
- Arms (focus hard - tone, but also strengthen) I want to be able to wear sleeveless shirts and tank tops again!
- Butt (tone and shrink)
- Back (tone and strengthen)
- Legs (tone)

Increase cardio stamina – I get winded very easily now, and find it very frustrating and discouraging. Joined 24 Hour Fitness, and will take some cardio classes. I also love to walk (can do this at work, too), bike, rollerblade, hike/backpack.

Increase flexibility – Never a strong point, but much worse since I’ve stopped working out regularly. Will try Pilates and maybe some yoga at the gym? Very intimidating because of my size right now, though.

Other Goals
Improve self-esteem
Improve overall health
Improve quality of sleep
Join pool league again
Start dating again

Barriers to Reaching My Goals
Television
Embarrassment at current weight – Don’t want to put on shorts and go outside, or even to the gym, etc.
Disappointment at letting myself get so out of shape, and berating myself constantly – Very bad ‘self-talk’
Disappointment with previous failures at getting back into shape
Fear of failing again
Fear of a lack of privacy and confidentiality about weight, physical shape
Lack of self-confidence
Not planning meals ahead of time
Not planning mentally for ‘bumps in the road’
Having ‘bad food’ or ‘binge foods’ in the house

Hello,

Welcome to WLF and congrats for deciding to change and start a diary!
It looks like you have really thought everything out and really planned. Its ag reat way to go... getting a trainer to show youa round the gym is a great idea. I felt really uncomfortable at the gym at first... but then i thought to myself I am not going to let what I think others think of me stop me from reaching my goals. So I went... now i feel perfectly comfortable and feel great everytime I go and finish my workout:)

Good luck on your journey... I look forward to seeing you progress:)

Welcome to WLF 2B135, I think you'll get a lot out of this place. Just ask about anything on WLF and you'll surely find the support and encouragement. I was really impressed by all the ideas and thoughts you put down when getting ready to start your journey. Your already a head of the game, since you know your triggers and you know what you must do to get going. I also must say I'm so jealous that your writing a cookbook. ALRIGHT!!! I LOVE to cook, but to be honest, I rarely have the time to make up a really, really good meal. Don't get me wrong, I cook several nights a week, I just make it simple, because of time restraints. I look forward to checking in to see how your doing, and MAYBE you can even give us a sneak peak of a few of your recipes. MMMMM would love that. Good luck friend, and remember it's 1 pound at a time.

Hey welcome.... :)

I’ve joined 24 Hour Fitness. I really like cardio classes, but it’s been very intimidating going to the gym. I feel like everyone is looking at me, and I absolutely HATE feeling so exposed.

Hey it's not just you. I did some digging and found what I was fealing when I went back to the gym. I go to 24 hour as well.
Well I finally made it to the gym. I did two 15 min sessions on the recumbent bike. Then about 15 Min's on the treadmill and then I did about 4 whole Min's on the elliptical or what I like the call the machine from hell.........Thats something ill have to work on. Of coarse I was the biggest one there and I felt as if all eyes were on me. I was expecting that but you never really get use to it

So it's not just you....... get in there and start and in a few days days or a week it wont even bother you.........

Welcome again......

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement. I really appreciate it. I actually had blotchy hives the first time I went to the gym. I decided that until I'm a little more comfortable I'll go when there aren't many people. Unfortunately, that's meant 5:00a.m. appointments with the trainer. Trust me, this is definitely motivation to get over it already! I actually like the elliptical machine, and suprisingly, the rowing machine. I get to work my arms on the rowing machine without watching the fat jiggle as my arms are shaking trying to lift the weights over my head  .

Today I took a 30 minute walk at lunch. I wanted to take a longer one, but my timing was a little off and we had a big storm with thunder and lightening that sent me running for the shuttle bus. I wasn't able to go to the gym this evening since my sister is out of town and I'm staying with my mother and two developmentally disabled women she cares for. We had a great dinner, though, a salad with vegetable soup and whole grain rolls. Yum!

Tomorrow I'm taking my mother on the Ski Train to Winter Park to get her out of the house. She uses a walker to get around so we won't be doing any hiking this trip, but we'll tool around the town and I'm sure I can find something healthy to eat for lunch.

I'm going to start logging my food into FitDay.com. Several people here have recommended it (even Steve although he says he's not trustworthy). I also saw some people had posted pictures to chart their weight loss journey. I think that might be a good way to keep myself from cheating. My father (77), stepmother (72) and I went for a 17 mile bike ride down White Top Mountain in VA last week while I was visiting. The pictures that we got back are the reason I'm here.

Hey! This sounds JUST LIKE ME. Im sure I have an addictive personality. I am throw off track and get stuck in unhealthy ruts VERY easily! One day Im all fired up (just like you said) and then I convince myself that "a bit of junkfood wont hurt me because Im doing SO well." But THEN my body remembers the junkfood.. it starts to crave the grease and sugar again, the same grease and sugar I was literally addicted to. To explain it as a metaphor.. it's like being a drug addict. You're clean for a while, and the longer you're clean, the easier it is to STAY clean. But, as soon as you decide to try it again "just once" the drug addicts mind will automatically end up exactly where they started because of the addictive personality/tendencies.

It may sounds weird to compare overeating/junk food to drugs, but it really can be an addiction.. but it is an addiction that CAN be overcome! Everyone on this site has been very supportive and encouraging! Lots of people are very understanding and you can usually find lots of people to relate to. Welcome to the site, Im trusting that you are going to do very well! I will look forward to reading your journal and watching your progress. Good luck!

Walked, walked, walked... That about sums up this weekend which is a good thing. I took one of the women that lives with my sister for a 20 minute walk yesterday morning before we took her to see her Mother for the day. My mother and I took the Ski Train to Winter Park and walked all over the resort. Very beautiful, but pricey as you might guess. As far as my determination to find something healthy to eat goes, I did manage to find a Caesar salad, but it was premade and swimming in dressing *blech*! There probably would have been less fat in the bratwurst. Dinner, though, was chicken breast and steamed veggies. A couple of rice cakes while I watched an old movie with my Mom.

still.hurting - You're so right about addiction, and facing that I have a food addiction has been a very hard thing for me. I never used to even LIKE fast food, chips, etc., but after eating them a while I developed a very real craving for them. I'd bet that no one LIKED smoking and probably went through the same nausea and coughing seizures when they had their first cigarette. You really have to force the first few. Now with dieting, I have to admit that I forced myself to do yet another thing that's killing me.

The same rationalizations go through my head about McDonald's, chips or ice cream that used to go through my head aobut smoking. "I've been good all day, but it's late and I'm really tired/had a bad day so I'll just start dieting/quitting smoking tomorrow. I'll just have one cigarette/puff/burger/french fry to take the edge off." Or even "I won't buy a pack for myself, I'll just bum one/eat a few fries from someone else." It's the exact same thing.

I'm off to go home to clean my house nad put a pot roast on for company tonight while my mother is at church. Healthy enough with a big salad if I can just control my portions!

Weigh In Day Today
Start - 205
8/13 - 202

I think I'm going to weigh myself more often than weekly. I get off track so easily, I need a more frequent reminder of my goals. I think every 2 or 3 days is better for me. I'm on another thread that tracks weekly so I'll check in there, but will weigh for myself personally more often.

Sunday was a busy day, but a good day. I got my mom off to church, then rushed home to put the pot roast on and clean. I'm reading the latest Harry Potter book and it was calling my name the whole time I was cleaning. If I wasn't expecting company last night I would have put off cleaning totally and read all day. As it was I did manage to read about an hour, but that was the time I was going to work out. Bad Donna! I finished going through some old clothes and kitchen items and packed it all in my car and took it to the battered women's shelter. Stopped at WalMart to pick up a few essentials (TP and hair color) and managed to get back in time to make iced tea and set the table before everyone arrived. Went to bed at a decent hour so I feel pretty good today.

Sunday's accomplishments

- Drank 100 oz water
- Slept 7.5 hours
- Got a little exercise cleaning (no excuses Monday!)
- Breakfast-coffee, oatmeal w/blueberries and a little Xylitol
- Lunch-2 c salad w/half a chicken breast, low-fat dressing
- Dinner-roast beef, half potato, 4 carrot halves, asparagus (no bread-yay!)

Sounds like a good start and your already three pounds down, TERRIFIC JOB!! keep up the good work, it's working!
Kim

Thanks, Kim. It's really nice to see so much support here. I can use it this morning. I am really getting motivated to get over my gym 'issues'. Getting up at 4:30 so I can be at the gym by 5:00 so as few people as possible will see me is getting very old, very fast.

Went to the Cinema Grill last night with my roommate and saw Knocked Up. I did have 2 beers during the show, but didn't have any of my roommates mozzerella sticks. That's none, 0, zip, nada. Wahoo!! I feel so good about that very little decision :jump: .

Of course, I had to read for just a few minutes (which turned into an hour) before bed. Darn Harry Potter. This was a bad, bad decision BTW, as I am now officially dragging butt :drooling:.

Monday's accomplishments

- Drank 95 oz water
- Slept 4.5 hours (not good)
- Walked for 30 mins at lunch (wanted more but it was 95 degrees!)
- Breakfast-coffee, 1 whole hard boiled egg + 2 more egg whites, large apple
- Lunch-1c salad w/leftover roast, 1/2 potato, 2 carrot halves
- Snack - handful of mixed nuts
- Dinner-leftover roast beef, 4 carrot halves, asparagus

Hi! I just stopped by because you look interesting. I can relate with the gym thing, but honestly it'd rather have other people to watch so I like to go when it's busier now. If I can see someone else's pain, I feel better about my own!

With the Harry Potter, did you think about books on tape/cd/whatever. I put it on my iPod and now I can listen to it while cleaning house, watching tv, and even at the gym. If you want to know where to download it, pm me.

Hi Kandazzle,

I (re)listened to the last two Harry Potter books (one on CD and one on iPod) while on my vacation back east a couple of weeks ago. It definitely helps to listen while I work out, but I'm meeting with a personal trainer when I go in at 5:00am. I'm paying too much to be distracted while she's talking, but it's a must wihle I'm on the ellyptical (sp?) machine and treadmill! I'm with you that books are much better than music to take my mind off of the pain in my legs and lungs. For me reading is like being abducted by aliens, big chunks of lost time (and perfect for blocking out the pain!).

Went for a 20 minute walk today at lunch. I think it must be 100 out there. I found out that yesterday was 99, instead of the chilly 95 I thought it was while Iwas walking. I have to get back to work now. Needed a brain break before diving back in here.

75 oz water down!
Big honkin' salad for lunch!
Food logged!
Teensy walk done! (OK, I'll shove in a DVD when I get home to the a/c)

Can you tell my heart is not into working today?

Eh, when it's hot out, I don't see how you do it! Today at work I had to haul the trash across the black parking lot (about 5 trips total, 20 mins or so) and I about died. I think the heat index was 110 here today??? Ick!

Way to go with the water! I"m struggling to get enough.

I finished it! The Harry Potter book that is. If you haven't read the series, you need to steal it from your kids and do it. It was a very fun and healthy break. I'm now starting "Change Your Thoughts - Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao". It's a discussion about how to apply the Tao Te Ching to our current lives.

I used to belong to another online diet site and participated mostly on a thread called 'What I Did Right Today' or 'WIDRT' for short. The basic idea was that people slip, we all do it, but dwelling on it is detrimental to reaching our goal. What we focused on was what we did RIGHT each day. It was fulfilling to see that list grow as I changed my behaviors. Since I'm familiar with that term, I'm going to continue to use it here and try to make the list longer every night when I post.

What I Did Right Today (Yesterday)
- Drank 105 oz water
- Slept 7.5 hours
- Logged food in Fitday.com
- Met w/Personal Trainer for upper body work with free weights and machines. The most challenging were a yoga pose called the Plank, and an overhead press/lift w/dumbells while stepping up on a very high step (brutal). Also walked for 20 mins at lunch (100 degrees!)
- Breakfast- LOTS of coffee, 1 homemade breakfast burrito-Eggbeaters, ff refried beans, low fat cheddar cheese)
- Snack - Big, juicy orange
- Lunch - 2c mixed greens salad w/leftover roast
- Snack - mixed nuts, 6 Hot Tamales
- Dinner - Leftover roast beef, 4 carrot halves, steamed green beans, whole grain roll
- Snack - 1 slice of cheddar cheese with 4 (1" x 1") whole grain crackers

You know you ROCK on the water intake, GREAT JOB!! and good food choices in your last post. I think your on a good roll, keep on moving down that track!!
Kim

Would've written sooner but I can't move my arms. Yow! Even my boobs are sore. My trainer was so happy to see me today! I, however, wasn't quite as perky as yesterday. Fortunately, she worked my lower body with lunges, squats, some torture machine that worked my inner thighs, and one that worked my quads and butt. I like the machine that you sit on and push with your legs to lift, but I think she knew I liked it because we didn't stay long on that one. Lots of crunches and work on the balance ball. We'll see how well I can walk tomorrow. Between my arms and what I'm sure my legs and butt are going to feel like I may have to take the day off work.:) Next week we'll spread the workout days apart a little which will help, too.

Thanks for the cudos on the water, Kim. Fortunately, water is one thing I've never had a problem with. I always have a glass or bottle with me, and even take one to bed and keep it on my nightstand overnight.

Stressful evening tonight. My 18 yr old niece and I chatted for a while and I spent the first half hour hearing about her college classes she's taking toward a degree in environmental engineering. The next half hour I spent trying to keep the panic out of my voice while I desparately (but calmly) tried to talk her out of getting pregnant. She's decided that she should have a baby now because it would be easier while she can get grants and loans and wouldn't have to work. Please say a prayer, light a candle, speak to the animal spirits or whatever god or goddess you believe in, and ask that she just waits a couple of years. I'd really appreciate it. Fortunately, I'm the cool aunt and she trusts my advise, but I don't know if I got through to her this time.

What I Did Right Today

100 oz water
ate on plan all day
worked out with trainer
slept 7.5 hrs
logged food
Family time

I will certainly put in a prayer for you today!! I have a niece also and she is just 21, I went through the exact same thing with her. We are super close and she confides in me for every thing. She just got her associates degree this past spring, so she is now working towards her bachelors. I told her when she's done with school that would be a great time to start a family, IF..... she's found someone that is the "right" one to share that with. It's hard but she knows first hand what it's like to deal with broken families, as her mom and I grew up is some bad situations. And well, she got to see a lot of that as a small child, because her mom was just 17 when she had her. She finally saw the light, so there is hope, don't give up on her and keep on her about the positive sides of waiting. I was so happy to hear however that you are a big water drinker, that is so good for you. You also mentioned using that workout ball, I haven't tried it yet, but I see a lot of women at my gym use them and I guess they work really, really good. I have this feeling, your going to be losing and real soon and it's probably going to melt off for you once your body gets more into your workout routine. Your doing a great job, keep it up!! Have a great weekend!! :jump:
Kim

Thanks, Kim. My niece's 2nd biggest argument against waiting was that she'd like to go straight into a master's program after her degree and then she'll have to work a couple of years before she will actually have her engineering degree and certificate. By then SHE'LL BE 28! That's so old; almost too old to have kids! God help me.

Busy, busy, busy! Work was insane, then our email server crashed. I worked until almost 7:00, but that eliminated the temptation to go to happy hour. Silver lining! Came home instead and went for a short bike ride, did some laundry, and had steamed cauliflower, spinach and baked orange roughy for dinner. Yum! Went to bed early and have had a productive day so far. Now on my way out the door to take my mother to run errands, maybe Sweet Tomatos for lunch and then another bike ride if it's not too hot.

What I Did Right Yesterday

100 oz Water, plus some herb tea last night
No Happy Hour
No fast food
Exercised a little even though I didn't feel like it
8.5 hrs sleep (heaven!)
