Hi,
I'm a 21 year old Biochemistry student from the UK. I have a particular interest in metabolism, which I study as part of my degree, as well as nutrition and obesity-related problems such as diabetes type II. I'm a keen gym goer, however this is a very recent thing
as I used to be the laziest person on earth until round December/January when I really decided I should do something about my general health and weight. I've read a lot about fitness, strengh training and nutrition, and learned about it this year too (who would have thought 3 lectures on creatine would have been so useful hahaha).
I was slim until the age of 17, when depression led me to disordered eating (binge eating disorder/compulsive eating disorder). Things got worse when I hit uni - too much booze, and got even worse when I hit Australia and New Zealand as part of a 5 month backpacking trip, where I partied, drank and ate so much (was fun though), not to mention smoked 490853459 cigarettes a day...
By the time I came back from my trip in March 2006, I ballonned to a BMI of 27 - not a good look for my frame. I gradually lost most of this weight BY NOT DIETING but by re-learning to eat like a normal person should eat: f--- the diets and eat my fruit, veggies and proteins. I then gave up smoking and joined a gym, which was the scariest thing I've ever done, and people who havent seen me since still don't believe me when I tell them, but hey, who dropped from nearly 30% body fat to 22% body fat? ME
I now do 2-3x sessions of weight/resistance training a week and 2-3x cardio with intervals a week. I unfortunately have to be very careful with what I eat atm as these years of abuse have caused me to have IBS... charming condition, but manageable once you understand it.
VERY long wonder who will bother reading...
Anyway I'd like to add that I'd love to trim and tone a bit more - a BMI of 19.5 may seem as the lower end of healthy (18.5 WHO recommendation) however it's ok for a toned and fit person, which is one of my goals.
